  • Hey Malleusm, I have a question. In Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Dirtyphonics Remix)" during the drop at 0:45 it's basically the growl in your video, but it's kind of chopped up. I was wondering if you could explain how to do it on Reason, I'm sort of new to this. Thanks!

  • @nstrikefromnerfhaven In order to do that you just automate the mute button on the channel that you have the growl set to. So when you're in the sequencer you automate the track lane for the mixer channel on and off by setting points at the times in which you want it to be chopped up. If this sounds like spanish to you (which it might if you're new) then keep learning more about Reason and in time it will make sense. Skrillex didn't become Skrillex overnight. :)

  • @MalleusDUB Surprisingly I understood it, thank you very much!

  • deadmau5

  • you sound like the mammoth from Ice Age?

  • @babymau5 I do not sound like Ray Romano!

  • @MalleusDUB you sound like joel zimmerman

  • 12:34 "you lear somethin' NEW EVERY DAY!!!!!"

  • how do you sample what you make on malstrom?

  • @DJDad3y I explain that in my "resampling tutorials"

  • Thnx for helpful tips :D

  • Id say who cares bout skrillex but you all seem pretty into em. Sick tutorial I have a list of scratch patches I made if you'd like sample em throw me a message

  • Yes, he uses Ableton, not Reason. Jesus! WHO CARES WHAT HE USES!? This video is a tutorial on how to make a SOUND, that Skrillex uses in some of his songs, for Reason 5. If you use Reason 5 and were wondering how to make a SOUND similar to the one he made, then this is how to do it. Now stop arguing over what he uses and just enjoy my Reason tutorials for what they are. Please! ...wow I feel better.

  • doesnt skrillex use ableton and not reason

  • @crizthakidd yep, your point?

  • Lol at the guys arguing for skrillex using massive for the signature bass. It's FM8. Source is himself.

  • Yeah really mediocre "produce" scrillix

  • I don'T understand why you have a sound if you don't put patch in your combinator or Maelstrom. Can you help me pls

  • I'm skrillex :P

  • You can do this yourself. Just play it over and over again and break it down into pieces in your mind, and then start making your own personal brand of skrillex dubstep.

Just analyze it hard in your mind.

Credits to MalleusDUB, this was a great tutorial!

  • quick reason tip: holding shift while turning the pots or sliding faders reduces the sensitivity and gives you better control. Hope it helps.

  • Thank you

  • your background is sickkkk

  • @Rezonate music Right. Lmfao

  • haha, "I'm not a fucking machine.."

  • Can you explain this for NI Massive because thats where he makes it not reason.

  • @Theflashingkicks Hate to burst your bubble but he actually uses FM8. And no I only work in Reason. Sorry buddy

  • @MalleusDUB He started with massive?

  • @Theflashingkicks Really not gonna argue with you mate but I've read several interviews where he clearly states what he uses and he makes this sound in FM8 and uses Ohmicide to shape it.

  • @MalleusDUB In the music video of Breakn' a Sweat at 2:42 you can clearly see him using Massive in Ableton Live. I can say for sure if he did that sound in Massive but he do use Massive. (And i red it someplace else If you don't think thats a good argument)

  • @benji575 can't* (srry for double post)

  • @benji575 I honestly don't care what the guy uses. My point is that I use Reason and this is a tutorial on a Reason combinator making a sound Skrillex has made whether its with Massive, Albino, Z3ta, Preditor, etc...

  • @benji575 He uses Massive for somethings, but there was an interview where he said he uses FM8 for his signature growl bass sounds and even afterwards said how people always thinks he uses massive. A better point to make is to experiment with many different synths and vst's. Limiting yourself to one just because a favorite artist uses it occasionally is only going to hinder you.

  • @YourFavoriteLesbo Exactly.

  • @Theflashingkicks lmao oh man these Massive noobs kill me.

  • @Theflashingkicks I use Massive and I replicated it ;P

  • @RiddleDeeDiddle skrillex uses fm8 and massive but he mostly use fm8 for his signature bass

  • as soon as you said you dont like skrillex I left, after writing this comment of course.

  • @o0Te0zJTAG0o Sounds like you missed out then silly. You shouldn't let someone's opinion dictate what you learn.

  • @MalleusDUB It's funny, you never really said you don't like SKRIllEX, you said you like a couple things he's done. people can be stupid sometimes!

thanks for the download and the 2000 sub download btw!

  • hell ya nig! u def know ur way around reason!

  • Hey, for those minor adjustment to knobs and sliders....hold down shift while you move em' and it will adjust slower.

  • thank you so much. i was trying to figure out how some of the dubstep sounds are made (old habit from the music concrete days in college.lol) and i was completely over complicating it for myself. i have to admit, i am surprised that there is not too much in it, but because of technology making this simpler which i am not against. pretty cool. i am into skrillex because i was so curious as to how he gets his sounds, and also because i really do like his tracks. cheers for the insight

  • Nice tutorial, bud. I have an unrelated question. Is there anyway we're able to play about with the envelopes? Or atleast see what there is to offer regarding the types of envelopes? I've had Reason 5 for about a year and i'm yet to discover how to use them. Thanks in advance!

  • hey man can you sort us out with that patchs...ive been massing around with the pitch bend lately and id love that patch...its cool if you don't want to share i understand youe buzz :D

  • Thanks for the help... been looking for this type of sound for a bit now.

  • Anyone using Ableton & Operator check out my channel for a real simple way to make a similar bass

  • @boldequation damn your promoting everywhere lol, got your tut from DSF

    -randorando

  • program called?`?????

  • Crayzeeee!!!

Thanks Malleus!! I'v had reason on my desktop for a month now, not knowing a fuck how do make all this stuff!!

  • The way you describe Skrillex's music makes it sound so lame. Love it

  • this helped a lot thanks!

  • i like youtube reason tutorials, they are mostly helpfull. i produce stuff with reason too. so if anyone wants to know how reason can sound ..i did a chillstep kinda thing..."Unkunde-TheDive" its not very professional, no drop in or stuff like that, but i guess the sound is good ....

  • UUUH, i was looking for the automation bit, to make it go down...considering you have the patch up for download...

  • @PhoenixFireFx Right click the pitch bend/edit automation...then set points on the sequencer track lane labeled pitch bend. This goes for every knob in Reason. Its how you make your songs sound good. :)

  • @MalleusDUB Yeh :) i know that but what values and points tempo etc...

  • THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I REALIZED ITS SPRITES, I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT AS SPIRTS! FUCK I SUCK.

  • Nice, thanks :) First time for me that I think an automated index is useful in some ways. I never used the the most graintables in the last 6 years of producing with reason, so for me that'san inspiring tutorial!!!

  • Thanks man!

  • Sounds uuuhm.. less funny.......but still kinda funny. :D

    You're cool, mate !

  • Anyone wanna collab on reason 5?

  • good work! thanks for helping everyone out

  • skrillex da bomb

  • thnx !

  • awesome toturials, your great! plz keep uploading

  • Great tutorial, I'm subscribing thanks for all the info!

  • naw man i like your tutorials you're really helpful so fuck those assholes who think they know everything they wouldn't be here in the fucking first place right? keep doing your thing cause it's mint!

  • TY

  • Hey im a guitary person, can you just tell me what the lowest note is?

  • Thank you very much man for taking up some of your time to show us how to create this. I've always wanted to know!

  • I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff but I'm trying to learn. I followed your tutorial, but when I hit a note on my keyboard it still sounds normal. Could someone help me figure out what I did wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Whats the program your using?

  • @fighterzbt23 He uses the beta of hip production pro grooves. It's not released yet to the public. You have to know the right people.

  • @fighterzbt23 DEERRRRRPPP

  • very good tutorial man. keep it up!

  • Thank you so much man! People like you are heroes!!

  • other than that, i love Malleus.

  • What could we except like comments from Skrillex's fans?

Congratz Malleus ! I really enjoy all your tuts (and your songs) ! Keep up the good work !

  • Can't believe people have the nerve to disrespect Malleus when he's taking time out of his life to show them something they otherwise would probably never ever learn on their own. Fucking haters have no character..smh

  • @TasmanianPower Do it then, but first FUCK OFF!

  • @TasmanianPower Sorry for doing you a favor. Hey lets try something shall we? Take a trip over to Harvard Law School, walk into a random class room, sit down, and after 2 minutes of the professor talking, explode like a crazy lunatic like you just did on my comment wall. See where that gets you sweetheart ;) Calm down. This might be the internet, but don't think that you deserve being spoiled because you pay for a service. Don't like it, learn how to do it on your own Mr. Ungrateful.

  • @MalleusDUB Do you have any tips on EQ'ing the growl? I have nice little cornucopia of sounds I've thrown it into and it kinda sticks out like a distorted sore thumb....

  • @OfficialKillerKat It sticks out because of the width in that little delay at the top of the combinator. Put it more to dry and then lower some of the volume and EQ to taste. I have the default settings on that combinator set to an obviously ridiculous setting so that I could pick out the people who just rip off the patch and stick it in their song and call it theirs...and when I hear this I laugh and laugh and laugh. :)

  • @MalleusDUB lol I hear ya. Thanks for the reply dude I'll try that out.

  • @MalleusDUB harvard law

  • @zepdrix haha its funny cause you added law!

  • @MalleusDUB - He wants a "Skillizator" ready made..! Is not enuff that, for free you teach how to do it, no, he wants a Mc Skrillex fast food sound.

  • @TasmanianPower i loled

  • @TasmanianPower lmao thank you, was about time someone said that.

  • @TasmanianPower ....what? reason tutorials take a lot more explanation than a minute, retard.

  • @TasmanianPower Loool. Turn your caps off mate.

  • @TasmanianPower your one kind of a dog mate...

  • @TasmanianPower fuck off dude!

  • @TasmanianPower You sir, are a legend.

  • @TasmanianPower its called beign thorough and tutorials are meant fro people who ahve jsut gotten soemthing so the reason its lengthy is to make sure you udnerstand waht there talkign about

  • @JAYMADRAIZED Any man who dickrides Skrillex this hard on a "how to sound like Skrillex" tutorial gets called out and then their comment deleted! How does that make you feel Mr. Capslock?

  • @MalleusDUB suck ya nan yhh who du u fink ure talkin 2 ill smash u up... n im not ridin skrillex he is a talented musician n u man mus be dole dossers or suin cuz it seems uve gt all the tym in the world to be hatin on skrillex... so get bk in ya conoe u dirty imigrant...

  • @JAYMADRAIZED I can't understand you. You spell like an illiterate. Are you mentally handicapped?

  • @MalleusDUB no im nt i jus get bord writin the full words so i cut it down short...... buh obvs u dnt kno bout tha cuz ure a dole dossa... snfm.. climb back up ya dutty mom n stay there

  • @JAYMADRAIZED Look up at your comments, then at mine. Notice the thumbs up. All mine. Please stop. You look foolish. Also, on the "imigrant" comment above, I'm a Caucasian male born, and still residing in the United States. No deportation needed. And just to clear things up, I think Skrillex is a talented producer. I just think all his songs sound the same and his DJing skills are rubbish. So I'm not a huge fan. However I made a tutorial on how to make a Skrillex bass despite my opinion. Enjoy

  • @JAYMADRAIZED skrillex makes sounds for teenagers with female voice for clubs!!. Listen Reso you'll take a lesson of dubstep!! lol skrillex!!

  • Awesome for doing something you did not want to do too much its amazing this haha :D well done

  • DOWNLOAD THIS, .cmb patch that growls when you move the mod wheel up and down, use the pitch wheel also, it sounds awesome, just right click on the vocoder and click add effect, go to dynamics>basses>nastier bass and vwalah! (take out the spaces lol)

    h t t p : / / w w w . m e d i a f i r e . c o m / d o w n l o a d . p h p ? v k c y v 0 3 j l g v 5 v k i

  • I hope everyone realizes, that there is no way to really re-create that sound, seeing as Skrillex made it by recording his voice, toning it down, adding heavy distortion, modulation, and then syncing to a synth, with some added affects. Good luck.

  • Absolutely in love with this tutorial. Not only is it informative, but your quirky commentary makes it enjoyable to sit through. Hope to see more!

  • y u no make you own growlz?

  • @hotnovel ?

  • @MalleusDUB growls = music

  • clever tutorial

  • you are awesome. i use massive but a still managed to follow a bit!

  • Thanks for the tutorial. It helped much. Lay off on the I don't give a fuck about anything because skrillex sucks dick. I mean I can agree to some point, but more than anything you're just being pretentious. It's not that big a deal. Make the tutorial. Don't be a cock. Move on with life. Bam.

  • @AdrienChaos Like I said before on this issue. I'm not being pretentious. I'm being honest. I said I didn't like a lot of Skrillex's work. Not that "Skrillex sucks dick" Think about it from my standpoint. I get tons of messages a day asking me to do a tutorial on certain sounds. I didn't want people thinking I wanna recreate everything Skrillex has ever made. I still get people wanting more Skrillex sounds despite this video. It's just a matter of opinion and an attempt at making my life easier.

  • dude u do epic tutorials i got reason never used any music software before this and just watching this video and a few others helped me be able to produce sounds and get a basic understanding

  • Guys, ive been working really hard on putting songs together on reason, and if u could take the time 2 see what I hav made: search-CWLeMusic, thank you :)

  • Hello, I am a teenager that knows how to play classical piano well, but I don't know shit about the Reason 5 program I just downloaded. Is there any guide to synthesis for the DAW-retarded?

  • @DJDrumrolls Isn't that the job of the Cubase, FL, and Pro Tools user?

  • @MalleusDUB LOLOL no joke!! wonder why he's looking for reason tuts when he uses a different program... and really, once you learn the terminology, its all the same.

  • @MalleusDUB Your right my bad

  • @DJDrumrolls oh shut the fuck up you go and figure out how to do it on them.

  • Comment removed

  • Fuck you.

  • @DJDrumrolls stop bitching you little girl

  • @DJDrumrolls LOL. Producers nowadays. Not only want to sound like someone else, but want even another person to tell them how to do it. -_-

  • @Cracklestep Funny ain't it. I'm kind enough to help spread knowledge and this is the thanks I get.

  • ERM, ERM, erm, erm, erm, erm throat erm erm erm

  • @scottie0791 Funny. I'd love to see your flawless explanation skills. :)

  • How Is It A Good Idear To Make A Sound Tutorial ' Without Playing The Sound,, Dummy

  • tip for changing your levels - hold shift down and it makes it more precise. haha. it's not so "touchy."

  • GRR YOU SHALL DIE! SUBMIT YOURSELF TO THE SKRILLEX FANBASE!

    Joking, you're a fucking ace producer :D

  • when i opened my combinator up all the devices didnt show, is there any way i can add them after?

  • you sound a lot like spongebob! :D great tut. thank you very much for this.

  • I think most of the EDM community got pwned when they 1st thought it was Massive, then it was FM8 and it ends up being effing REASON, staring us right in the face. How to use the dist's and the combinator this way is a win within itself! Doing this in Reason 6 Beta FTW!

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks man, good tutorial

  • this was awesome thank you! i found out though that the *sine wave* in the shaper gives the sound more BEEF if you know what im saying.

  • hold shift while u tweak knobs for precision control fool!

lol seriously tho i dont think you know how much ur generousity wit these tuts help reason users like me, your amazing thank you!!!!!

  • the only thing i couldnt do was set the knob on the combinator to the oscilator index thing. i really dont know what combinators do or how to use them so im kinda nooby.

  • Woah anyone else notice this guys sounds like deadmau5?

  • i have reason 4. will this work on there?

  • @doggotbitm Sure will :)

  • @ST3V3CR3AM3R I'm using Reason 5 my friend

  • A useful tip: hold shift for precision when changing parameters. I can tell u get frustrated around 9:59

  • What a contrarian this guy is...

  • do u have the "oh my god" kid sample from scary monsters and nice sprites? where can i find voice samples?

  • @lakeaqua Type in "Speedstacking girl" it's the first one that comes up.
