What the hell does work for unicef and 'beautiful' character have to do with her singing ability . She wasn't right for the cockney role. Celeb worship is insane. Stop taking so personally.
I love this song! Thanks for posting. I love Audrey Hepburn. This is her best role. But I prefer her/Marni Nixon's singing. I love Julie Andrew's voice, though. I could listen to it for years.
Technically, Audrey Hepburn did most of the singing of this number in the finished film of MY FAIR LADY.
MARNI NIXON came in on the Bridge portion of the song to help Audrey Hepburn out.
If you listen to the original soundtrack CD of the movie, you will notice quite clearly that on this one song, Audrey herself did most of the singing herself.
The whole Audrey vs. Julie war is a lot like the Elaine Paige/Susan Boyle war; it's perpetuated by those who choose to ignore the talent of one and trumpet the other to a ridiculous level.
Did this role originate with Julie?
Yes--and nothing will ever take that away from her.
Was Audrey good as well?
Yes, she was.
Who was better?
Personally I think both have strengths (Julie has the better voice, Audrey a bit more grounded in her acting) and prefer Julie, but BOTH are SUPERB...
@JenaJinxed In her defense, Julie had a perfect cockney accent, but she was told not to use it for the musical because it was too good and the New Yorkers couldn't understand.
Julie Andrews ORIGINATED the role of Eliza, the role was written for HER....she was Broadway's best at this time (Camelot, The Sound of Music, etc) Marni Nixon did a terrific job of dubbing Audrey as well. Audrey's natural voice was only an actress' voice - not a singers voice. Her best singing is "Moon River" in Breakfast at Tiffany's
Yeah, that would explain Moon River and why Henry Mancini wrote it specifically for Audrey; Don't get me wrong I love Julie Andrews and wished she had gotten the role, but Audrey was hardly chopped liver!!!
@AmericanEvita although she was in the first production of My fair Lady, she didn't originate her character. Eliza is also the main character in a play called Pygmalion. The play actually inspired the musical. It's actually more powerful than the story of My fair lady. If I could, i would get the rights of the script to Pygmalion and the songs from my fair lady and do a mix. that would be awesum! XD
@MegaloSaro The MUSICAL was written for Julie Andrews. I am not talking about the character or the play. The character as seen in the musical. That is so clearly gonna be written for whoever FIRST sings and originates the role on Broadway. Just like Sarah Brightman originated Christine in Phantom and was written for her. We are talking Broadway here. Julie Andrews is the biggest name in Broadway and always will be
@AmericanEvita She did not originate the role, nor was the role written for her. She was however the one cast for the role in the 1956 Broadway musical.
Julie Andrews sings too beautifully! And she sings with emotion and passion! She was an amazing Eliza Doolittle. Audrey Hepburn was also really good but I'd prefer if Audrey had sung instead of Marni Nixon because Nixon's voice is really lovely but sings without... charisma and stength while Audrey could have sang it with Eliza's emotion, it's obvious Audrey's voice is not as melodic as Marni's but it would have been better.
um..........she wasn't too old.......she was only 35. but she wasn't tooo tooo awful...she was ok! not the best!!! Julie was better! julie was the youngest stage actress to perform eliza doolittle profesionaly! i'm happy for that! i don't know why the decided to do Audrey! how is she perfect for the part? i dont' know! all i know is that audrey knew that julie was perfect for the part but she just couldn't turn the oppertunity down!!!
that would be lovely. but i wouldn't say it was lovely. i would say it was loverly! her voice isn't so bad. if she worked on her voice, she just might.
I did not know that. Thank you. I now wonder whether there are any old tapes of A.H.'s performance laying in some vault in Hollywood somewhere. I'd love to view the film with Audrey Hepburns voice actually sing!
Trevor6, I found out about this on TCM channel, they were discussing that Audrey Hepburns had actually had sung in My Fair Lady. They showed only one song, Wouldn't it be Lovely. Her voice is high Alto, rather soft.
Don't you mean loverly lol? And i understand what you are saying but even though julie has a beautiful voice, thats i why i prefer audrey over her for this song and wouldn't it be loverly because audrey has more of that akward and annoying voice going on that eliza doolittle needs.
true, probably cuz she put so much enthusiasm, and the movie, half was marni and the other half was Audrey. Audrey does the ''oo's'' differently as if she like, got an idea. julie does it as if like....um.....hard to explain, but she was more like youll be scared kinda thing. so ya.
Haha. I love Audrey Hepburn and Julie Andrews. Julie is an excellent singer , and Audrey is an excellent actress. ( Not that Audrey isn't a good singer and Julie isn't a good actress)
Well, HenryCorbetson, since 99% of the world's population adores Audrey Hepburn ('tis a fact!), your disgusting comments mean absolutely nothing. Good riddance!

Too harsh... I like Marnies voice better - it has got the grace and elegance, even singing this song. :) In Andrews singing - it sounds like hate, in Marnie's - Eliza sounds like an annoyed, dreamy child, who in fact does not wish any harm. Like this interpretation more. It is deeper. To my mind, of course. But if some likes Julie better? Well - ok. Why not? :)

Wait a minute. It switches back from Julie to Marnie when she sings "but all I want is Henry Higgins head". Wonder why. Anyway, Julie is, was and always will be the definitive Eliza. IMHO, of course.
It's interesting having Julie's voice in this- it's my life's ambition to track down the copy of MFL on Bway that Julie was in. In the mean time, I'd like to try dubbing all the musical numbers that she sings over Audrey and Marni in the film. :D I have no life.
Much as i liked AH how i wish that Jules had done My Fair Lady on film as well as stage ....i mean how stupid to sign up Audrey for the film and then have to pay Marni Nixon to provide her singing voice!!?

First two seconds she looks a bit like Mischa Barton. Then I recognized her-beautiful Audrey Hepburn.

This is NOT the ORIGINAL soundclip from the movie....on the movie Hepburn was dubbed by MARNI NIXON and NOT Julie Andrews

Oh, the dubbed voice is Mani Nixon, not Julie Andrews. I have found that there are many persons have that misunderstanding. Sigh.....

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Actually- this is the song that is Audrey's real voice. They didn't dub it, except for the head voice bit.
I prefer Audrey's voice in the movie. She does the accent better than Nixon.

Wait a minute. It switches back from Julie to Marnie when she sings "but all I want is Henry Higgins head". Wonder why. Anyway, Julie is, was and always will be the definitive Eliza. IMHO, of course.

I too agree with you two! Julie Andrews will always be Eliza Doolittle! She has the most glorious voice in the entire world!

It's interesting having Julie's voice in this- it's my life's ambition to track down the copy of MFL on Bway that Julie was in. In the mean time, I'd like to try dubbing all the musical numbers that she sings over Audrey and Marni in the film. :D I have no life.

I prefer Marni Nixon, personally.
I mean - for this movie.
I LOVE Julie in her other movie.

Much as i liked AH how i wish that Jules had done My Fair Lady on film as well as stage ....i mean how stupid to sign up Audrey for the film and then have to pay Marni Nixon to provide her singing voice!!?
