i watched both movies today on netflix.. and the old one is so much better. john wayne is a much better actor thats why he won best actor for true grit in 1969.. this guy is good and the movie is allright to. but he just isent the duke and nobody will ever fill his boots!
@thegrinchl7 Woooooooooow, you really sound like one of those old geezers who sit on a rocking chair and bitch and complain about the "youth of today" Oh sorry, was that being stereotypical? Well you aren't any better. You want to have a go at playing Mattie Ross? Go ahead, see if you can do better.
I too enjoyed True Grit. But I enjoy you too, Fr. Robert Barron. I wish I got get some more of your CD's. I have two, Seven Deadly Sins and Seven Lively virtures. Plus another one, Some of your favorite scripture stories. So how can I get some more CD's from you?? Janice Crowe at janiceecrowe @gmail.com

Fantastic film. And personally my opinion is that Bridges portrayal of Rooster blows Waynes clean out of the water. Shouldve picked up an oscar for this
@jasper2008ify I love the new version, but stating that the 1969 version is not true to the novel is false. Both films follow the narrative of Portis' novel pretty closely and both depart from it in some ways. The biggest difference is tone. The 1969 version is a rollicking adventure in the same style as most American-made westerns of that era, but Coens created a somber morality tale out the same material. Both films are very effective and neither do an injustice to the book.
@jasper2008ify - The Cohen bros. said they said they had trouble finding a teenager who understood the complex Portes dialogue. They said "we never did find her" when settling on Hailee. Download this podcast (available on iTunes) if you care. They said "quite frankly, we ran out of time". They never did find what they were looking for. Frankly, I agree. Hailee was DULL. Argue with the Cohen bros. if you like. Not me.
On NPR, the Cohen bros. admitted that Hailee was not their first choice for the role. They simply ran out of time and settled for her. In a world full of texting-teens...with their diminishing vocabulary and this bizarre habit of forming a questioning lilt near the end of all their sentences, the Cohen bros. would need a time machine to find their proper Mattie. Never mind their horrific choice of music at the END of their fine film. Iris Dement's pig-call nearly scared the audience to death!
@thegrinchl7 that's a lie. the Coens said they stayed with Hailee because they felt she nailed the character better than any of the other girls who auditioned
@ryanmacdaddy1000 - Download the PBS podcast for Fresh Air with Terry Gross "Cohn Brother/ True Grit". In this interview both brothers spoke of "time running out". They kept "looking for and auditioning others for the part of Mattie Ross" but THEY RAN OUT OF TIME. They "settled for Hailee Steinfeld. You dope.
@GENEKRUPA1935 You know, this isn't a remake of the first movie. This is doing a closer adaptation of the book on which the first movie was based, also called "True Grit." This one was not at all supposed to be related to the first True Grit movie.
@GENEKRUPA1935 they DIDN'T remake it. they thought it sucked a bunch of nuts. I thought so, Wayne even thought so. they made it CLEAR that they WEREN'T remaking the old movie. they were remaking the BOOK. besides that, the actors in the new one said they weren't trying to outshine the actors in the old one. some of them haven't even seen the old movie yet. yet, they were far better than the actors in the old one
@thegrinchl7 I'm currently re-listening to the PBS Podcast, and I can find nothing where they say they settled with Steinfeld. They say many times they considered settling on whoever they might cast, but didn't have to.
Joel: "We would have tried to convince ourselves that the person we would have settled for was the right person. You do that when you have to, but we didn't have to" -- 8 and a half minutes in.
You may not personally liked her, but I think you're mis-remembering the podcast.
@thegrinchl7 My bad, I actually listened to the NPR podcast they did on January 12th.
I can't post the link on a youtube comment. And I apologise for the mix-up. Perhaps they did settle with Hailee, or said conflicting things to different podcasts, and I realise opinions differ from person to person, but I still believe her performance was excellent. But that's just my opinion.
Great, great movie. Jeff Bridges is fantastic and Hailee Steinfeld is amazing.....and only thirteen when she did this movie. To Mr. Bridges - Please do more westerns, you were incredible in this role.
she has a similar charm to Ali Macgraw or Brooke Sheilds I think! Hopefully she won't end up like Lindsay Lohan. She has talent, I wish her the best of luck!
@thegrinchl7 since u brought up shakespeere I should mention that hailee is filming romeo and juliet remake as we speak in italy as juliet.. So...

She is just AWFUL. Frankly, I do not think there are any
teens left who can play Mattie Ross. These texting teen
mall rats cannot handle the difficult Portess dialog. Like
Shakespeare, you don't just start TALKING or READING
shakespeare over night. Hailee sounds more like a L.A.
mall rat than an 1880's bible thumping prairie girl.

My thoughts exactly. I was surprised everything happened exactly as expected, it makes a nice story arc I guess, but still
I guess they had to work with the book and everything

@ryanmacdaddy1000 - Neither film versions lived
up to the Portess novel.Hailee Steinfeld's performance
was weak The Cohn brothers were always going to
have trouble finding a teen who could handle the
complicated Portess dialogue. Today's texting teens
don't know what arcane dialogue is. Iris Dements
mighty HONK at the end startled everyone. Very few
people would argue the John Wayne's Rooster was
far superior to Jeff Bridges. I like THE DUDE...but I
LOVE the DUKE!
