He talks about his dad being grim, but he's so down on just about everything, even his own documentary. Has he ever explained why he disliked it so much? Most people, fans and people who didn't even know who he was come to love it, or at least become a semi-fan. Maybe that's why he disliked it, because it focused on him, where he'd rather just be the guy in the corner. Funny seeing him sign an autograph now after saying no to the hippie in the documentary. Glad he's a little more accessible
hes an old wanker with a wife who needs some cash, i hate that old style of comics and fuck whoever says that makes me against comic art. the new style of comicart doesnt look like some crapy disney cartoon, it fuses together anatomy understanding and insane styles of cross hatching. this guy has had his time... and his wife coule be his kid, so dont think of this guy as a legend of comic art, hes actualy a grumpy old fart
@wigglesize What the hell?! His wife's only five years younger than him... You call Crumb grumpy and the only thing you do his hating on him. Who's the old fart now?
@bordereye look man i realy dont care how old she is, but it looks plain wrong.. the reason im hating is because this old fart is just trying to be so origional by complaining about comic art hung on walls and not understanding modernisation, its a crutial part of anything, bringing it up to date and not keeping the style as those, in my opinon, very boring illustrations he did. i think hes an old fart because he cant also see the good in new aspects of comics. my opinion tho.
R. Crumb is one of the greatest American artist, story teller, cartoonist, illustrator, painter, sculptor, and musician. he even has written great analytic writings in philosophy, art history, sociology, psychology, religion, cultural studies, and history. some of his books are even taught in universities now. yet he did not go to colloge. Robert Crumb is the great example of how much self-education is more effective and valuable than conventional education.
When I'm 67, I wanna get payed a lot to put up a museum exhibit, gripe about how all the rich honkies don't know how to read a comic, then grope my still hot wife's thigh in front of the AP. And they say he doesn't know how to party.
The exhibit is great and gives you a sense of his masterful technique and drawing ability. Very,VERY little white out present in many pages, and the pencil lines, when visible, are just guides for the finishes. He doesn't trace over tight pencils. The man was born to do exactly what he is doing. Interestingly, I read an interview where he seems to be just as surprised by how little white-out he used, back then, compared to how much he uses it now.
awesome! Crumb will forever be a raging social critic and I'm right behind him! of course, it's easy for him to bitch about commercialism - he complains while living in his house in France, where he's lived for decades!
If you watch the 1994 documentary 'Crumb' made about the guy, all that he does is complain ad nauseum about his Dad, about the vapidity of US society, about how rotten life treated him. So am not surprised that he's complaining about the exhibit, it seems that finding fault and complaining is something he is especially adept at doing.
@MrNuance77 Um, yes, he criticises everything, including himself, pointing out all his own faults, in much more detail than you just did, and that's what makes him a great social critic or just great in general. By the way, are you aware of the irony of your comment? Complaining about and finding fault with a man who has a great body of work behind him, and looking at his faults rather than talking about what is good about him?
@HelloAgain151 The guy is a comic book illustrator who says nasty things about everything. What a charade that you think he's an important "social critic".
@MrNuance77 Complaining : You're still doing it, and still not recognising the irony of your comments. Don't look now who is saying nasty things, you might get an unpleasant shock. Also, you clearly haven't ready any [or very little] of his work, and as you said below, what you "know" of him mainly comes from the movie you saw.
@HelloAgain151 Yeah, two hours of tedium, watching him whine on and off before a camera about how stupid the world is. If Osama had done that, we'd know about his mind, but no, with Crumb we're supposed to forget the film and instead read every one of his illustrations and ooohh and aaaah about what a "great social critic" he is, and search for deeper meaning. *yawn*
@MrNuance77 You don't really get irony at all, do you? You are doing exactly the same things you are accusing him of right now! And in each previous comment you have made. Aside from that, basically what you are saying is you don't like the film. Where does it say in the film we are "supposed" to ooh and aah? What is your problem? You don't like the film and/or you don't like Crumb. So what? *yawn*. When you are able to entertain as many people as he does, then I might respect your opinion more.
YOUTUBE REMOVED my censored, blurred cartoons for "communitty guidelines" selective enforcement, yet XXX rated cartoonist Robert Crumb' is glorified worldwide.
@1p2o3i youtube has arbitrary selective censorship. bliptv, vimeo & daily motion all hosted my exact same cartoon video seen on my website. sucking is a metter of taste.
@geogodley your not a legend or a cultural icon ... his couldn't go up back then anywhere in general public believe me.. don't even compare yourself tho it's just ...well silly
@nightfevers I think he's just being overtly humble about his art not being up to snuff. It makes sense; it's good to be humble. And if not that, he really does feel his work isn't good enough, which I disagree with but then again art is quite subjective (and mostly bullshit anyway).
He talks about his dad being grim, but he's so down on just about everything, even his own documentary. Has he ever explained why he disliked it so much? Gosh- a bit shocked at his changed appearance since the earlier docu's.
Apart from looking at his great work i could listen to the guy talk all day.
I almost bought 'genesis' a while ago. hard to realise the artistry that goes into it.
Cool guy- think i'll go but it.

Robert Crumb is an important American artist and social critic.
His brother Charles was very intelligent and funny in the movie. I guess indirectly he was responsible for all of this.

He's right. Totally weird to try to read a comic on the wall. Maybe in the bathroom, while sitting on the commode...
