This forge should be great for bending smallish diameter metal I would expect. Possibly even good for joining a piece or two in a pinch. definately make a great emergency forge for doing a down and dirty fix to get your butt out of trouble.
@bushcraftkid6622 yes your 100% right the increse in heat is negligible without a pipe to give evey bit of air power... i do the same thing with a pipe with charcoal and an array of heat proof bricks and a steal crucible i can melt copper it looks white hot infact i burnt my face the other day just from the radiant heat just off the molton metal not even getting to close to the furnce i use a air bed pump for mine a hair dryer sues to much elcectrcity give it a go cheap project and fun as fook
@ConorC96 As long as you an heat the whole blade and control the heat okay, then sure, why not? XD
But as a small piece of advice, I'm guessing you haven't been blacksmithing very long, else you would know what you'd need for a good piece of steel/iron... I suggest you stick to knives and get your striking down nicely before you spend the money of decent metal for a sword... =)
I know this is an old video, but me and my friend just built a small forge out of fire bricks, and we cant seem to get coals hot enough. wether they be grilling coals, or ones we made in a sealed can with a small hole set in a bonfire. what coals are you using?
It can be even simpler than that. Just a length of fence pipe or swingset leg. Plug one end and lay it flat on the ground. Make some holes in one side for the tuyere and then build up your mud around it like a bowl. Let the mud dry a bit and then lite a fire. Works great. You are on the right track, son - don't let any of these critics give you a hard time. :-)
i would make it bit different, but you do have a good forge idea right there, and for patton, this was a basic one, im sure if you get like bricks or something else to make it longer it would work. (my family used to make forges like this)
i loved seeing your set up but how you gunna get any real heat with that make some sort of cover for it and extend the coal pan then it should work great :)
cool "survival forge" idea, could probably do without a hair dryer if need be by forming a big mud wind catch on the end and fanning some tree branches over it.
Keep it up, thats kinda how I started out, with very basic things like that. Over time, you'll learn more, and get better. I used to do small knives only, now after many years im able to forge, cast, and machine parts for knives and guns.
nice setup. I'd personally want to make a huge forge for making longer blades.. I need myself an anvil first though.. but this is a nice quick setup for small blades. Nice Job
very nicely done. the info and demo are helpful, hope to build a larger more permanent forge, but this was good to see what the most fundamental basics needed are.
p.s. you should change your name to UrbanBushcraft. this is great DIY, backyard project making.
i smelt my own metal useing bog ore and coal i use a celtic style smelter im a bladesmith now for since i was 11 and im 18 now! i have my own workshop i use a champion 500 forge
@UnlimitedBushcraft I use a proffesional one but with keramics. I need to melt the metal, cast the rough shapes and do the fine works with a mallet, chissel and ather tools
@patton446 Bragging much? If you already are making swords why are you looking to make a forge out of mud? Seems like your just commenting to stroke your ego.
@TheNejiMule Ill answer with a question... Have you read anything on Blacksmithing? If not i suggest you go and read up, or at least click on some of the side videos =S
k...how did man build the first forge? What did they produce out of the first forge? This i like to know so i can build my forge and upgrade to modern forges.
@flaviusicafsz Generally when heating knife blades I want to do it as fast as possible and if I were to use a lower power hair dryer it would only take longer!
I liked your video...I'd love to see a video of the wood gas generator the you built!
:) ok next time me and my friend hike out into the middle of nowhere just over like 2 big hills out of town there is metal we find here and there... i will get a metal sheet and punch holes in it with other metal i find and get a can and a rock and find a big rock and i could forge and smith... although i need air... still sweet.... wait where did you get the charcoal? burnt wood?
Great job. One suggestion: if you bury the fire pan up to the rim or add the mud above it you'll be able to add more coal. I've found that when forging that a deeper bed of charcoal works better. Maybe because the outer cooler layers of charcoal (especially on top) insulate the main area of heat around the blower inlet. Keep it up.

Maybe because the outer cooler layers of charcoal (especially on top) insulate the main area of heat around the blower inlet. Keep it up.
