The word 'Hur' is the plural of both Ahwar (Masculine) and Hawra (Feminine) which literally translates as "white-eyed", or persons distinguished by Hawar, signifying "intense whiteness of the eyeballs and lustrous black of the pupils.

Al-Hilali & Khan are the only ones who translate somewhat truthfully, even though their translation is still tame compared to the image that the Arabic original is seeking to create in the mind of the men who are listening to the recitation of these verses.
