  • GOD BLESS BOTH OF THEM N JEAN STAPLETON IS STILL ALIVE!!!!

  • Donny & Marie- ugh. What a pair of annoying tools.

  • Classic!

  • At the end I thought of his Chair and how he wouldn't even allow "Edith" to sit in it.

  • All in the Family: Greatest show ever.

  • Jean Stapleton is chicken shit lol

  • @dj2bklyn besides being quite rude, it is untrue: she just told carroll o'connor to MOVE OVER!! *lol*

  • Donny Osmond went from this to hosting the revival of Pyramid a couple years later. He was tolerable on Pyramid, but certainly not in the same breadth as Dick Clark.

  • So many great television stars of our youth, I realized Mr O'Connor was no longer with us and then out of curiosity I looked him up only to realize he has been dead almost 11 years.

  • Geez stifle there will ya dingbat :)

  • Geez stifle there will ya dingbat :)

  • Jean is so classy, even with these dorks insulting her she maintained her professionalism. Carroll got the laughs and accolades, but she did moreof the hard work.

  • A quote from the episode where Mikes friend Zabo visits. You know what Archie Im not worried about Zabo and Gloria, you know why? because my generation trusts. ARCHIE: Oh you hear that, his generation trusts. thats the same thing Abel was doing when got it right over the back from his brother with a cain. ARCHIE IN THE SLAMMER: We try to drag youz off to choich to learn you something about GOD, and what do you do? You make him out to be some sort of Englebert "whats' his dink"?

  • i wish Jean Stapleton talked normally in the show All in the Family too, just like the way she talked in this viedo, instead of that annoying childish voice of her in the show. her voice ruined the show's spirit, because women in New York hate to talk in a silly childish way, especially back then in the 70's.

  • Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton were the most talented actors that television has 'ever' seen... Hands down!!!

Archie and Edith Bunker were the 'Greatest' characters ever created for TV sitcom... 'Al Bundy' of Maried With Children is a close third IMHO... Al's the MAN!!!

    Brilliance, just brilliance...

Thank you Mr. O'Connor (RIP) and thank you Ms. Stapleton for creating the wonderful characters that were Archie and Edith Bunker...

  • I honestly cannot turn the volume up loud enough to actually hear what they're saying. What is wrong with you that you would record such a low volume?

  • I WATCH THEM EVERY NIGHT,LOVE THEM.

  • Carol O'Connor looked like Jimmy Carter does today before he died.

  • To truly appreciate this moment and the memories of these two fine actors, just tune out the siblings on the right.

  • How did these idiots get these two legends?

  • Four people are Meatheads! Dead from the neck down!

  • This would have been great if the Osmond's would have stayed home.

  • I dont wanna be an ass here., but would it of killed her to say "Oh Archie" for the minions of fans that made her what she is ? I dont think so... How long would that have taken., 1.5 seconds to entertain and pacify everyone that PAID to come to that show because she and Carrol O'Conner were there. Yeah., Its a bit selfish., but I love her and :Archie" still...

  • @MrRoxxstar The story is that when they were chaning the show from "All In the Family" to "Archie Bunker's Place", O'Connor wanted Edith killed off and asked Stapleton to do a death scene. She told him "No", and so when the show opened, Edith was already dead. I'm surprised she did this show with him.

  • @MrRoxxstar Ms. Stapleton did not want to 'do' Edith and we have to respect that... However, it would have been cool to see them 'do' Archie and Edith...

  • What a nice moment between two tremendous actors. For the record, this "Donny & Marie" appearance apparently aired on Monday, April 24, 2000. Carroll O'Connor did not pass away "shortly after." He lived for another 14 months after the taping, leaving us on Thursday, June 21, 2001. May he R.I.P.

  • I would have to disagree with mellowyellow1806. Calling them selfish is a bit overboard. What if they just don't want to do it and getting 'paid' is just an excuse. And how insulting is it to wave a $20 at her as if that would change her mind.

  • How dumb is Donnie? He actually whips out his wallet and offers her $20. Maybe after she does the voice she can do a lap dance as well.

  • Goes to show what great actors they were. When you watch this, you almost think its different people than the ones who acted on All in the Family.

  • It's really strange to hear them talk in their real voices.

  • Carroll O'Connor seemed genuinely moved. I wonder if he knew his time was short....

  • Notice that Carroll still has his trademark rings on his middle fingers, just like he did when he played Archie.

  • Archie Bunker tried to warn us. The Commies, welfare queens and freaks have taken over America. Including the White House. RIP Carroll Oconnor.

  • I always loved "All in the Family"....Jean should of done the voice though....I hate it when stars forget what got them there and demand money for every little move they make. Just like JJ on "Good Times"....he also refused to say "Dynomite"...without being paid first....sickening how selfish they get !

  • Jean Stapelton is an uppity cunt. She never truly appreciates what made her famous and wouldn't even do the voice. She has no respect for a beautiful person like "Edith." Hey Jean, get off your fucking high horse and realize this is what you will be remembered for and what made you money. Selfish bitch.

  • @itsallthesametothem No, Marie was wrong to ask an actor to recreate a roll on a talk show. Donnie and Marie have spent their entire lives in show business and should know what actors are like.

  • Family comedy shows never got better than this. :(

  • i only came to know this show just lately, i guess it was on in the seventies( correct me if i`m wrong) but i can wish this show and still do everyday...the only other sitcom that was entertaining as this, " was love thy neighbor" staring rudolph walker, and nina baden semper (cant remember the white neighbor`s name)

  • @bigman6069 1971-79.

  • What year was this?

  • @BRUCEBAUM45 2001

  • ooooohhhh Archie!

  • @enisorian

Not necessarily. Some people just don't handle funerals well. They prefer to grieve in private. From what I've read, jean & Carrol were on good terms up to his untimely demise.

  • what jerks donnie and marie are!! no class no talent!!!

  • Jean Stapleton wanted Murder She Wrote.

  • @DarthSideous63

Really? I did not know that! As good as Angela Lansbury was, I think Jean would have been excellent too in the role of Jessica Fletcher!

  • I STILL watch this show. It is still great and current.

  • "I meant your family."

    "That's who I meant."

    lol.

  • wow, they sound nothing like there characters.

  • 2 great legends.

  • @irvinemuscle

    I second that emotion !!!

  • yeah, really tacky w/$20 move....kinda insulting huh? I'm so glad she refused & made jackasses out of the two!!

  • Jean is pure class. She's on a talk show for the first time in years and what is she doing? Paying homage to Carol.

  • @zamusicza

A REAL lady! Today's "stars" could learn a lot from her! Intelligent, kind, sweet, articulate..and totally dedicated to her craft!

  • @TheGoldenEyedboy I don't think so. She said she was too distraught. She didn't want her last image of him to be in a coffin.

  • Didn't read all of the comments, so I'm not sure if this was said or not. The film Jean Stapleton was referring to around the 2:30 mark (RETURN TO ME) was released on May 7, 2000. They saw each other at the theater for the opening and she didn't want to say she'd be on the Donnie and Marie show. So, to respond to the description, Carroll O'Connor passed away about thirteen months after this interview.

  • Both of these people are such a class act.

  • i like him also as bill g in the heat of the night

  • Jean did say she only do it for money, that's why everyone including Donnie was pulling out their wallets.

  • Manual laborer - I think you meant to say that Family Guy ripped off All In The Family, since Family Guy did not exist at the time All In The Family aired.

  • @nasa19581 prepare to be corrected, friend - edith and archie (both real people) time traveled into the future, saw family guy (who was inspired by a show that would not yet have existed according to my scenario) - it's complicated, hard to explain.

  • All In The Family totally ripped off Family Guy

  • @manualLaborer

    The other way around pal...

  • @manualLaborer

Huh? How could "All in the Family" rip off a show that didn't exist at the time? Were Norman Lear & Bud Yorkin clairvoyant?

  • @manualLaborer "All in the family" was based on the 1967 British show "Till death do us part". This was acknowledged in the credits. Jean Stapleton mentions it in this video

  • @binaway it also is science FACT that "Til death do us part" traveled to the future and ripped off everything - i can't rationalize it - it blows my mind.

PS - did you know that show is a spin-off of "The Jeffersons"?

  • ah, jez the dingbat

  • Donnie and Marie made the beast with two backs

  • When i watch re-runs of All in the family, even after ten or more years i still know when the punch lines come in.I never get tired of All in the family. It's a classic.

  • i still n will always luv all in the family

  • Love them, love the show, favorite old show, never tire of it, wish Carrol O'Connor lived longer.

  • Love them.

    They were great.

    What memories they bring.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Why is everyone acting as if Jean threw a massive hissy fit? They asked if they would do the voices, Donny made a joke about the money, they both declined, Jean politely explained why she doesn't do it, and they let it drop. Nothing happened that struck me as rude behavior by any of them. I think some folks are making a big deal over nothing.

  • How sweet to see them together again.

  • BEST. SORRY

  • THEY WERE THE BSET!

  • How long after this did he pass away and did Jean attend his funeral, what was the cause of death

  • @TheGoldenEyedboy

I saw a photo of the co-stars at the funeral. Sally Struthers looked especially sad.

  • @spider9137 you went to his funeral, how did he look in his casket.

    what color was it

    what color were the flowers

    did you view his body

    did you cry at all

did you feel spiritual and like heaven is real

  • never have i seen 2 actors so believable in their roles like archie and edith. i keep so many reruns on my dvr

  • He was such a nice, good man. Just look at his eyes!

  • While she's talking about the movie, it looks like he wants to say wilya stifle der Edith?

  • Looks like George Weezy and Lionel don't like this.

  • It was so STUPID to ask them to do the "voices" of Edith and Archie...how stupid and corny of them. I'm so glad they refused to do it.

  • No wonder their talk show was cancelled. They were, are, so CLUELESS!!... I bet they have never even seen one of their episodes.

  • @MonstruosEspantosos So Very True!

  • This made me cry. My all time favorite show and actor!

  • Who'd a thought Donny and Marie would be responsible for the only joint interview with these legends. Priceless moment.

  • Carroll still wore those rings on his middle fingers, up to the end.

  • I know only folks old enough to remember All In The Family's original run and the times it was in will agree, but i truly feel this was the best American TV series ever, and not just for the racial/social issues. This was the bedrock of the American Family dynamic.

  • Archie made a lot of sense; the theme song was full of truth!

  • stiffel yourself edith will you

  • Carroll O'Connor was a jerk as Archie but a wonderful down to earth guy in real life. Jean Stapelton on the other hand was sweet and endearing as Edith but a real BITCH who is full of herself in real life ! What a real stuck up bitch to say she wouldn't do the Edith voice ! If she respected her audience , who by the way MADE her a star and a multi-millionaire ...she would have given us the Edith voice for even a few seconds as a THANK YOU for putting her where she is! JEAN you suck !

  • For that 40 bucks Id rather see Marie dance on the table in the Raw.

  • Thanks for putting this on.I have never saw these people (out ot character)together on a show.Esp their last appearance together. To see both of them as real people is wonderful.

  • Jean is entitled to her opinion and to say no to doing Edith's voice, but she could have been less of a bitch about it. There are polite ways to turn down such an invitation. She could have apologized and explained the craft and how, for her, the voice belongs to the character. She comes across as a bitchy "actress" type in this interview.

  • OMG -- Donnie completely insults Jean Stapleton! What a freakin', shameful dork he is. I agree with several other post-ers on this site: why didn't a QUALITY talk show book these two fine actors at the time instead? p.s. I interviewed Carroll O'Connor when I was a cub reporter in college ... he was all dignity, intelligence and kindness.

  • Who the hell is playing the piano?

  • @geupelboi

I think that was the show's musical director, Freddie Flatulence. He and his former band (The Five Hot Toots) are probably best remembered for their top ten hit of yester year called "The Whoopee Cushion Serenade". It was a GAS, man! In the words of the immortal Bard, "Hey dude...who cut da cheese?"

  • @rutgers1961, D&M probably never watched "All In The Family"

  • he passed away while this show was still on the air?

  • @MichaelHansenFUN

I hope not! As I recall, the "Donnie & Marie" talk show didn't last long. I don't think I ever saw a whole episode of it. I am not surprised their show didn't last longer. They may be talented singers but it's obvious from this clip that neither of them have much interviewing skill.

  • It's nice to see Carroll and Jean together, but why did it have to be w/ Donny and Marie? I don't blame Jean for not doing the Edith voice. She's not a trained seal that performs on command. She was quite clear that she doesn't do the voice, then Marie persists w/ a little begging and tone deaf Donny whips out a $20. No wonder their show bombed. Once Jean refused the request, they should've dropped the subject right away instead of persisting. 2 dopes.

  • @bailinnumberguy exactly, why couldn't this reunion have happened on a quality show. You have Carroll and Jean, which are everything I love about Hollywood, and Donny and Marie, which is everything I hate about Hollywood.

I'm surprised no one made a "get outta da chair" crack when Jean and Carroll switched seats. I guess D&M aren't quick witted enough.

  • Archie Bunker-character is one of the best-played characters ever. Carol O'Conner did a fantastic role. The special thing is that Carol O'Conner in fact was far more liberal than "meathead". But Carol O'Conner became very fond of Archie Bunker-character and wanted to play him credible. I think he succeeded very well

  • @Moneycaller35

Well said & well put! It's a good thing more established TV actors like Jackie Gleason & Mickey Rooney turned down the role of Archie Bunker...I can't imagine anyone being better than than the late great Mr O'Conner!

  • OMG... Jean and Carroll and Donny and Marie. This makes me happy!

  • @runly1 how about ARCHIE, EDITH, DONNY & MARIE? ect...

  • @MichaelHansenFUN I'm not sure what you mean. Jean and Carroll are their real names. =)

  • @runly1 yes but all in the family meets the osmonds...

  • She kissed him exactly the way she would on the show.

  • is anybody else out there getting emotional watching these two titans of tv comedy together again (Carroll & Jean not Donny & Marie !)

  • donny and marie have no talent for day time tv.

  • @juxtn Or talent for anything on or off air or recorded for film, music or any artform of any kind. they never had anything to offer at all...none of them....They are one of the most "fake and manufactured" pieces of American crap ever made!

  • All in the Family, Barney Miller, and MASH are my favorite shows. I like Emergency! too, but the previous three will always have a place in my home. I was born in 1974 so many of these shows were made before I was born and of course after. I LOVE them...

  • @4gasem Same here, 1974 baby lol

  • I like it when Archie blows a raspberry.

  • No one could ever forget Archie and Edith Bunker in All In The Family, and Archie Bunker's Place. My favorite picture was Thanksgiving in 1979.

  • Two incredible icons of comedy!

  • these 2 immortals reunite on donny and marie???

  • It's amazing how Jean Stapleton completely transformed herself into a different person to play Edith.

  • @Encom7 True, and it's the same with Carroll O'Connor.

  • @Encom7 that is why they call it acting

  • @101southsideboy - Uh...yeah, I know. I was just commenting on the quality of the acting.

  • @Encom7 Yeah, she sounded so different in real life

  • @Encom7 Yes, that is called acting.

  • @yryriza - Um..yes, I know. Again, I was commenting on the quality of acting.

  • @Encom7

The sign of a gifted thespian! Same would go for Caroll! Amazing & awesome!

  • Archie still wears the same rings from the show to this interview..

  • He had it exactly right about Edith's character. Edith wasn't bright but she had a kind of innocence and humanist side that contrasted with Archie. Interesting clip and thanks for sharing. Too bad the interviewers were so awful.

  • @TheNomadicview I agree which explains why they did not last long.

  • Geez, it's really crazy that she didn't do the voice...

  • She was a poor sport to not do it...honestly.

  • That guy should be smacked for pulling out the 20 bucks to try to get her to use her Edith voice, pure insult.

  • my fav sitcom of all time

  • this is amazing. They were so close and it was so special seeing then together like that right before carrol's passing. On a side note the hosts are both asses.

  • You can tell how much Carroll loves Jean as a person and as a friend in this clip. You can't act that....

  • its such a shame that we will never see actors or actress bring the joy to the people like these 2 did. with todays reality crap and special effect shows. the golden days of tv are over. i grew up watching reruns of all in the family i the 90s i wish i could have been around to watch the original run.. the chemistry these 2 had will never be seen again.

PS; RON PAUL 2012. GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH (PATRICK HENRY 1775)

Please get out there and get active America before its TOO LATE.

  • @sicsempertyrannis187 The problem is that "All In The Family" was what you might call "Right Leaning"; it was The RIGHT show, with the RIGHT people, at the RIGHT time. Had it not been for the social revolution of the 1960's, it could not have been what it was.

Could it work today?? Doubtfully. Society has deteriorated to Idiotic reality shows, video games, intellectual vacancies, and self centeredness.

Where are the 60's when we need them?? Sadly, it may well be "too late". ;o(

  • @CounterCultureLives There is a show called "Modern Family" or "Glee", they both cover all the important social issues that needs open discussion; especially among youth.

  • @Pashto4Evr You are correct, but "All In The Family" tested certain thresholds of what was permissible on the airwaves during it's era. Racial issues, social injustice, homosexuality, the Vietnam War, political issues, religious issues, etc. were all fair game for AITF.

Remember, this was also an era where George Carlin was arrested in Milwaukee, Wis. for violating obscenity laws. "Class Clown" and AITF laid the foundation for shows like "Modern Family" "Glee", "South Park", and others like it.

  • @Pashto4Evr You are also correct that the shows you mentioned, and a few others like "South Park", do address important social issues that need to be open discussed openly. Unfortunately, there is not the sense of social consciousness that was so prevalent and intense during the 60's.

It's rather ironic that in a time where there are now more means of readily available communication than ever before, as a society, we have in many ways become more disconnected and complacent than ever.

  • omg im so in love with these two they have/had such AMAZING AMAZING chemistry its unbelievable.

  • 2 people are meatheads !

  • @habfan5150 What the heck? I came up with that comment before you, but received no "likes." LOL.

  • Keep in mind neither had done their characters in 20 years! It's like Jimmie Walker saying DYNOMITE or Gary Coleman saying Whatchoo Talking About... it's not worth an appearance on a talk show to briefly resurrect the characters.

  • I never paid enough attention to the Osmonds to know why so many people hated them. Now I know.

  • I think that was so inappropriate and insulting for Donnie to offer Jean 20 bucks for her to do the Edith voice. So lacking in class. I'm sure he didn't mean to be classless but he was nevertheless.

  • man that was awkward as hell. just sit down jean geeze.

  • This is so sad! Still great though!

  • @1:28 sounds like she tells Carroll O'Connor "I didn't love you"

  • Brings a tear to the eye.

  • A better, more skilled interviewer would have perhaps asked,, "how would Archie & Edith react to this_________________"?. Marie has no clue, "could you do that voice:?.

  • i miss the Donnie and Marie show

  • The one dislike was from "Meathead."

  • Carroll O'Connor reminds me of my late grandfather. *Sigh*

  • what a bunch of jerks, bad-mouthing jean stapleton just because she's a woman who takes acting seriously and refuses to be treated like a monkey here. she obviously isn't that tight-assed...... she was willing to play for 10 years in a then-controversial comedy like "all in the family." you have to understand. you see her on TV once in a while. she's seen by people out in public as "edith" all the time. and probably gets asked to "do edith" constantly. i don't blame her.

  • @tygersflowerz

Well said & well put! I wish all comments here at youtube were as articulate, thoughtful, insightful & intelligent as yours! CHEERS! :-)

  • This was a throwback, they are two talented actors. Jean Stapleton showed some of how she is in real life through her Edith character. Edith was strong and more intelligent than she let off. She let Archie think he was running the house but she was in control. Carrol O'Connor had a little bit of himself in Archie, he had a good heart it's just that he didn't like change, he was a character that stood his ground and got his point across. I would love to see them make a new All in the Family.

  • Stapleton: "Tons of LOVELY letters. Some of them from young people who are seeing it for the first time. And their reaction is like it was in the beginning".

If that doesn't define "Timeless Classic", then I don't know what does.

  • @LAtvFan what year was tthis?

  • You know that Jean (Edith) and Carroll (Archie) did NOT change that much in appearance over the many years since All in the Family. And that was nice to see, it made me feel better that Edith and Archie were still here, in a sense .....

  • JEAN IS NOT UPPITY, SHE'S A STRONG PERSONALITY AND WOMAN. HOW DO YOU SAY SHE'S NARCASSISTIC? LOOK UP THE WORD? SHE DID THEATER SO DECADES AND A PROFESSIONAL. THEY ARE TWO OF THE BEST ACTORS EVER!! LOOK UP THEIR HISTORY. YET THEY MADE THE SHOW" ALL IN THE FAMILY" A HIT AND FULL OF HEART AND SPIRIT. SHE'S A SMART COOKIE AND HE'S A JUST AS SMART. THEY ARE PROFESSIONALS. LOVED THEIR CHARACTERS. THIS IS STILL MY FAVORITE SHOW AND I STILL WATCH IT TO THIS DAY. MAKES ME SMILE AND REMEMBER THOSE TIMES.

  • They should have done the voices, biggest disappointment in TV talk show history! In another interview done around the same time, he does the Archie voice for a brief second. He wasn’t asked to, he just did it. I thought it was sweet. Jean doesn’t seem to be anything like Edith. I remember reading another comment years back saying, “Jean could have learned a thing or two from Edith.” How true!

  • @kboss2011 what`s uppity and narcassistic, about her?? D&M dropped the ball, having a historical pair of actors on their stage and asking dumb questions and offering $20 to do the voice....their appearance was wasted on this lame show. just my 2 cents

  • @toddmastria1 I think you hit the nail on the head.

  • I love this and think they are both great people

  • Jean is still alive i beleive

  • @madskyltd yup she is still alive! she's 88. i don't think she's worked in quite awhile, which is understandable. she certainly worked enough in her life and Edith was the role she was born to play. somehow even back in the 70s, I thought she was like 60ish years old!

  • May they both RIP, they are a legend in the characters they portrayed for sure!
