It's so weird to see the trailer and here music from other westerns, and not the legendary score composed for the film by Alfred Newman. His music was probably still being mixed at the time the trailer was distributed, but still ... the scenes don't have the same puch as when backed by his beautiful compositions. I LOVE this soundtrack - right up there with Elmer Bernstein's Magnificent 7 and Jerome Moross' The Big Country. These are the three great western scores, in my opinion.
Much of this movie was filmed right here where I'm from. Cave In Rock Illinois on the beautiful Ohio river. There are some awesome stories that were left out of the movie about the river pirates but a film can only be so long. The locals still talk about how great the cast was to them. Especially Jimmy Stewart. There were a couple incidents where cast members barely escaped with their life. I'm seriously considering writing a book on the the whole thing.
A very cool post! Thank. 1. I don't think the scene of people applauding Peck kissing Reynolds is included in the final cut. 2. Harry Morgan gives the best portrayal of U.S. Grant ever filmed but isn't even mentioned here (shown, however). 3. George Peppard does not distinguish himself in this film, IMO, belying MGM's hopes for him to be the next Henry Fonda. 4. Richard Widmark is superb in this film. 5. The studio seemed to think the raft sequence was totally exciting; not so.
Great cast and story but the fact that due to the cinerama you cannot get close ups and it detracts from the intimacity of the faces and their emotion registered.
The issue it has is with colour from looking at this trailer. Blue skyline colours has issues and Im sure if a print got badly damaged on one the three its curtains! Not sure if I have seen this on TV many years ago. The water scenes going down the gorge I seem to recall.
Let's see ... The movie was based upon a series of articles first published in Life Magazine around 1960 or so. The articles were the true stories of a Real Family in Texas. It chronicled their family history over three generations.
If somebody is going to remake the movie, re-read the articles first.
i plan 2 be a director some day maybe less than 10 yrs., and it can be possible to direct a remake of how the west was won. it will most be based on louis lamours book, where there was some parts not mentioned in the film.wish me luck.
@xtraman25 Making a remake of a "Perfect" film is near impossible. Look at the history of all the remakes. They rarely compare with or improve on the original. Use your imagination and create a film of your own.
How the west was won is definitly the best western movie trough all times. I just love it. Shown it to some friends and they too love it.
The scene with the buffalos is magestic!!!! one of the greatset scene ever, considering that they didn´t use computers and blue screens.
Cinerama rules!

just don't special effect it to death like most of the movies today. there's a time and place for that and this wouldn't be it.

@xtraman25 Just don't take any guff from the Jewish swine, as they will try to turn it into a transformers movie set in the west.
