shanex15 , no one but the official report knows the facts. Unless your on a need to know basis you don't have the facts. When your granted let us know, otherwise contact disco.
shanex15, it "use" to be informational, like PBS. Now it's a regular commercial channel which misleads. At which time did I say it was a lie?. shanex15, when you use ad hominem attacks your credibility is put on hold.
at any rate....the facts remain...he did not help in the clean up, fire and was the first to leave from the ship.....regardless of whom started or how.
and was protected by his father then and in the pow camp.
wlwanda , lets try this, how many other officers stayed and cleaned up? .
Wanda unless you have real time proof, no one is protected at any P.O.W. camp.
I take it you know McCain well enough to know how many meds he takes daily for pain and psyc. Rather than blather that his Father was protecting McCain from torture, let us in your secret, we love to know what you know to the bitter end, we promise not to fall asleep.
this is what I heard happened - McCain crashed 5 jets, and was responsible for the Forrestal fire. Something made the plane behind McCain fired a rocket, which hit McCain's external center fuel tank, and caused a fire. McCain panicked, and dropped two bombs into the fire
I was there, am very certain of these facts. McCain was NOT directed by his Commanding Officer to remove the bombs, rather, Captain of USS Forrestal was directed by SecDef Macnamara and CinC LBJ to use 1935 vintage 1,000 lb bombs which had been sitting in an outdoor field in Philippines for 20+ years. Why? SecDef and CinC placed operating requirements upon Navy and Air Force which could not be supported by existing weapons supplies and operating procedures. McCain and his Captain are heroes.
I respect your service and only ask whether or not it is true that McCain 'wet starting' his plane caused the fire and that he was transferred the next day. Thank you for your service.
Character is not made during adversity, it is revealed. McCain's character & courage was revealed: (a) Forrestal fire to which I, ship's Chaplain, and many others would attest, (b) squadron Ops Officer chose LCDR McCain as his wingman on combat missions, (c) what remained of his squadron went home, but LCDR McCain volunteered for transfer to USS Oriskany from which he was shot down over Hanoi, (d) Col Bud Day, USAF was senior officer present at Hanoi Hilton and holds McCain in very high esteem
Nope, it was the Zuni rocket that was accidentally fired due to an electrical surge from a F-4 sitting across the deck that ripped through McCain's A-4 that did it. Burning bits of rocket propellant ignited the fuel spilling from the ruptured fuel tank of his A-4 that started the fire. Technically McCain was ordered to remove the bombs by his CO...by dropping them on targets in North Vietnam.
My name is David Dickson.I was aboard the USS Forrestal for 6 yrs.I was in V-1 Division.A Yello Shirt Aircraft Director. On 7/29/67 I was Directing on Number 3 catapult. All I can say is that this was a terrible disaster, andhas to this day has and will continue to cause many problems for those of us aboard that day.I used to direct John McCain on the flight deck a lot.he was a Great Pilot, ands I think he would be a Great President

It was McCain's oversized bombs which started the fire right? Wasn't he directed by a commanding officer to remove them before the fire happened?

If McCain where any other person (not having fathers influnce) he would have been kicked out of the Navy long ago, for crashing the first two planes.
