Hi How are you ? Can you writte to me , I saw your web page , I speack portuguese and spanish , I can translate if you wont !!! I am writting project trip Catamaran from Chile to Polinesian Ilands , Well Nice Film , But Don`t are portuguese or spanish ! Best Regards From South America!!
Fair play to you man! I was a seaman in the navy and was sick of it. Swore blind i'd never go to sea again! Now im on a mission to get trained up and buy a boat. You've just cost me a few grand! Mind if i ask did you get much hassle off the authorities in Barbados with Visas and berth spaces and the like?
@goldenblade212 You get used to it... Takes me about 6-12 hours to feel totally fine, and then that's it... No more seasickness for the rest of the voyage.
I'm curious do you leave a sail up while you are sleeping at night? or during a storm? I've been wanting to do this for some time but don't know the first thing about sailing so any tips would be greatly appreciated!
@pobblebonk3 No worries - I accidentally replied under my other account, nspbikes is also me! But yes, quite rare. Mai'miti'vavau is up in Brisbane, but sunk when Yasi hit - Some more info on my twitter feed if you're interested.
Contessas are such beautiful yachts, how did she perform for you? One is coming up for sale in Melbourne but relies on a four hp outboard having had the diesel removed. Beautiful footage thanks.
Awesome video. If you know anyone sailing from the US to the eastern hemisphere, please let me know. Looking to join a crew to get overseas in an adventurous way and travel the world.
Naysayers will always be. I, for one, very much appreciate your "real" video posts and really wish the documentary would become a reality. I don't think I want to cross an ocean... the San Juan Islands are vast enough for me, but I have learned a lot from you and I think you composed yourself very well in what must have been a challenging situation. Blessings. Be safe.
Love the video. Good job. I'm 40 and just getting into sailing now, dreamed of it for most of my life though. There was always something ales that needed to be done.... You should be, and probably are very proud of what you already accomplished.
@Ibizaner I'm sorry you only understood three words out of the entire film, my apologies and fair winds. Are you sure English is your first language? ;)
:) yes thats right, i do not like english! it was not my aim to make you and your voyage bad, i am sorry for my comment. i am sure you did a great job, go on!
Glad somebody has the integrity to show the shitty side of sailing. Sailing can be totally uncomfortable, cold, wet (obviously) and thoroughly depressing. BUT WE LOVE IT !!!!!!!
I love all your videos. Can I ask you though - You always appear to be sad when sailing, as if you're not really enjoying your time on the water? I'm genuinely confused.
@SeanOBriain Probably because I pulled the camera out when I needed someone to talk to, because it was hard... Whenever I was happy, talking to the camera was generally the last thing I was thinking about, as I was too distracted by how good things were. Generally though, I was trying to be honest, and the plain truth is, solo sailing is hard on a number of levels. It's all highs and lows, and generally the camera caught the lows.
@bigoceansvoyage I can appreciate that. I was just curious. I spent a little time on the water myself, but never the lengths that you have. I can't imagine how lonely it must be out there. Still - You had the balls to follow a dream, and I can respect that. Not many people do. Life is too short for people not to.
@TheSteelersbeast But those are three hard questions to answer :) Best: All the amazing people I met. Worst: Being stressed out a lot, trying to continue on. Would I do it again? No, I've done it... Would I do something similar again, with the knowledge I have now? For sure! :)
@Livenlaff BAD IDEA..and cruel to your dog also, it needs excersice and can get very seasick. And Ive heard of ots of people whos pets fell/jumped overboard an drowned. Even if your dog has been on many small trips doesnt mean it wil survive a long voyage
@dmgcat You just sail on through... Pull the sails down, put up a storm jib, whatever you need to do. No, I did not roll or knockdown. Scariest moment... Nothing really 'scary' ... Just miserable sometimes. No, I never used a drogue, and didn't have one at the time. I did in the Pacific but never used it there either.
Very good and very encouraging for other sailors as well. But why do you stay in the evening with the light on your head and not more lights? I saw you have solar panel.
@olyroad I used a lamp on my head for working outside on deck, checking the windex etc - While I did have lights inside, usually they would blow out my night vision, so the headlamp was better. I did have solar panels, yes.
it's great to see someone doing this solo. It'd be quite the accomplishment. Quick question, on the day that you said it wasn't blowing hard enough why didn't you launch a spinnaker?
hey nick, great video.very inspiring to us new sailors,,,did you have much sailing experience before you bought the contessa26????hands down greatest video of solo across the atlantic,,,my hat is off to you..thanks

hey i was wondering. wont it feel better sleeping in the boat with a hammock i mean tie it and your weight will stabalize you so you dont roll with the boat. wont that be more comfy if your eyes are closed? cause if u awake and see the boat moving that much from you i'd guess thats kinda sickning

Hey, loving your doc so far. I was wondering, I am buying a boat soon and want to do some reading on sailing. Is there a great book you can recommend? Something that covers just about everything, or whichever is the most useful.
I'm wanting to learn to sail also and bought the book ( Fast Track to Cruising-- How to go from Novice to Cruise-Ready in 7 Days ) It covers everything except how to use a sextant. It's very well written, professional, easy to understand and addictive! I'm not Billy Mayes, but this book is awesome for any new sailor.
