Roland sold a "Virtual Sound Canvas" which pretty much sounds identical but through software.
I totally get the "nostalgia factor"! I feel the same for many classic games such as Monkey Island 2 and Wing Commander. Doom however I did experience with a real Sound Canvas when I was a kid, so to me that's the version that sounds "right" so to speak.
1- Is this emulated well on any current DOOM ports? 2-It's weird, but I think I prefer the OPL version, maybe for nostalgia reasons (same reason I don't play with texture filtering or mlook, etc)
There was so many times in my life i wished i has an actual Sound canvas, today i finally decided to act and bought a SC-55mkII. Microsoft soft synth was no longer enough, i wanted the real thing!
Yea it's interesting to discover the differences amongst various Midi modules :-)
AFAIK the Roland Sound Canvas was the main General Midi device and used for composing many game scores. I find that it usually gives you a very authentic and well balances experience...
Anyone interested in these, check also "DOOM with Yamaha DB50XG on 1996 PC". It's interesting because on some levels Roland is better and others Yamaha is. The Roland sounds are more "realistic" but the Yamaha sounds more aggressive which fits for the themes in this game. On more softer games XG is often over the top.
the Microsoft Wavetable synth is similar in sound to the SC-55 but some of the instruments sound wrong.
A lot of older games of the early - mid 90s had their audio tracks composed on an SC-55 or similar, but because many people could only afford AdLib and similar FM synth cards, many people, including myself, never actually heard the music as it was supposed to sound. FM synth sounds nothing like this, it's much softer and quieter and more electronic sounding.
@SPTSuperSprinter156 Most of the microsoft wavetable midi synth sounds are sampled from SC-55, but some sampled from SC-88 and SC-88pro ( the odd guitar or electric bass ).
@michaliskebab Sadly good wavetable hardware has taken a back seat to other methods of providing in-game audio. Too bad they still don't make PCs rocking ISA slots or else I'd still be rockin' an AWE64 Gold even in my "modern" Core 2 Quad system. :P
this will NEVER get old!

Huh...I was expecting the Roland Sound Canvas to sound different...sounds about equivalent to M$ General MIDI.

Sounds really nice, actually. I don't like rock music but I do have to admit these are actually catchy in this form.

I used to play Doom with the Sound Canvas audio, played through my Gravis UltraSound. Never heard how it sounds on the real Roland unit, until now.
Must say, the UltraSound did an excellent job as well.

Sounds like the Microsoft Synth, but with more realistic echo!
Here I am in 2010 and I can't even get the quality of 1993 :(

Yamaha S-YXG50 and Roland Virtual Sound Canvas.
If you can ignore the apparent low quality hiss and crackling when using good headphones go for em. Better than what you have anyways.
