the album this song is on is a better metal album than ....and justice for all?! don't get me wrong, this is actually pretty good, but this sounds more like blues than anything resembling metal.....
Ian Anderson is a person that I'd like to have a beer with at his local pub. Down to earth kind of man that probably have a few interesting stories to tell.
I played this song regularly on my radio programmes on Capital Radio in Abu Dhabi during 1987/88. As I said at the time, it's a great song with just a hint of Mark Knopfler but is no worse for it. But about 24 years on the rubbish ending still gets me cross: it just stops! Aargh.
@TheBuffaloChicken To set the record straight (pun intended) the ALBUM won the FIRST EVER heavy metal album of the year award (Grammy) over artists such as Metallica with their album, And justice for all, just to name one that comes to mind
I thought this album had a heavy Dire Straits influence, from Ian's vocals, Martins guitar and the general vibe of the tracks. It was released just a year or so after Brothers in Arms and there are some heavy similarities.
Maybe no intentional but on the back of DS success, I'm not sure. I do like this album though, a departure from their normal baroque rock.
Funny that it was just me that was thinking that. And yet there's a few here that seem to have noticed it too. I think it's the guitar that does it. For all that it's a good song off not one of my favourite albums. NIce lyrics and guitar
Not only is Ian Anderson one of the worlds best musical genious hes also a fantastic poet and a really nice guy who cares about the ones who put him at the top...his fans .
@organaphus I love Jethro Tull, and I love Metallica, but there's no way this album is heavier than ...And Justice For All. it's a legitimate gripe. there's no reason that Tull deserves that award.
@wilky1189 They didn't actually expect to win it, to the exent that Chrysalis Records didn't even bother to send them over to LA for the ceremony! Clearly, nobody thought Crest of a Knave really was a heavy metal album, but there we go- at least Chrysalis managed to get a funny ad out of it- "The flute is a (Heavy) metal instrument!"
OK, so it sounds quite Dire-Straits-esque, but there is no law that says one musician cannot be inspired and influenced by another. Don't forget that Ian has been a pro since Knopfler was in nappies and will have heard this sound many times, after all Knopfler didn't invent it its just a bog standard clean strat sound with a touch of delay and tiny bit of reverb, hardly unique. That said, I admit that the riffs do sound very heavily influenced by Knopflers style.
Knophler is a kid compared to Tull!

Nice, never saw this one before. Always interesting to see official vids they made.
Amazing though, Ian somehow was able to look alot older in the 80s than he did in the 90s.
