A soldier died in the field of battle and came up to the gates of heaven, where he met God. He said to God," Lord, I know I did many things i ain't proud of, and many more that you won't approve of, so if you send me to hell, I won't argue." God stood there for a moment, and then turned to the gatekeeper of heaven. "Let him in", he said.? The gatekeeper, confused, asked why. God looked down at the soldier and said," This man just came from hell."
Great movie! I love this film 100%. Too many good things about it to mention. How 'Shakespere in Love' won the Oscar for Best Picture over this film beats me. When I watched this film in the cinema I noticed that a very old man sitting in front of me was crying but trying not to. i was moved by the film and then moved again by this image which will stay with me forever. Just 1 question: Why do the American soldiers never do up their helmet straps? Is it just to look cool or is there a reason?
@jonathan45278 Many soldiers didn't. It was for two reasons, one was the look (though airborne during jumps had to do them up for obvious reasons). The other was due to the shell impacts. The explosive force of the shell could jerk the helmet backwards if you were in close proximity, and if you had the strap done up it could break your jaw or neck, depending on the power of the blast. This is a massive could though, it's not a 100% guarenteed fact, and happened in only some cases.
Oh, shitty propaganda movie. I love how in the comments everyone that says something bad about this movie get a shitload of thumbs down. There are tons of war movies that are better than this one, go watch a few, like Apocalipse Now, The Pianist, Downfall, even Empire of the Sun by the same Spielberg. But don't watch Schindler's List, that one is one big manichaeistic piece of shit. Not trying to upset anyone, by the way, just saying.
@Sane051 this is not a propaganda film, its a realistic portrayal of what our ww2 vets experienced. The mission to save private ryan was just a small part of the bigger reality we saw in the film. My grandpa could barely sit through this film, because it was too hard for him to watch. But he has seen Schindler's list and the films u mentioned with no problem. There is no war film that makes u feel the impact these soldiers had to experience. Idk where's the propaganda.
i don't know about you guys but i can't look at the American flag the same way i did before. my grandpa jumped over Normandy so this amazing movie really hit home. i simply can't hang another flag on my property except for the one at the end of this movie.
Hands down, one of the best movies I have ever seen. This one is for you daddy, my beloved hero and warrior who landed on those beaches over six decades ago. I miss you more than words could ever express.
Aussiephil99... This movie is based on America's side of the war, so your right there were many countrys who fought. But we live in America so we make Movie's about America !
the omaha beach scene from this movie is the best peice/chapter of war cinema ever created.. or re-created rather.. i seen this movie at the cinema when i was 13.. n i never forgot it.. best cinema experience ever...
Just to clear it up! Before some loony comments... I know I have left out the Soviet Union, which has a staggering figure. But I believe the US did more to end the war, than the Soviet Union did through aid, military ops etc. Any other day the soviet union could've just as easily gone a different direction.
the problem with the movie is that the whole story is fake....i love the movie but the actual story about the guy is he goes back to hq to get home..and he was from England too.
This movie completely disregards the contribution of other countries....namely British/Canadian troops who landed on Sword and Juno beaches. In reality the Ranger division portrayed was dropped at the beach by Royal Navy landing craft not American....but Spielberg never lets facts get in the way of a good story....particularly when trying to appeal to a US audience.............who are too stupid to realise that other countries other than the US contributed to winning the war.
@Aussiephil99 if you realized the facts the landing on omaha was the worst of them, dont come here trolling about our contribution, show some damn respect for these men who risked everything for you to be in diapers
@egone123 ....piss off boy. I've forgotten more about WW2 than you'll ever know. Americans never consider the contribution of other nations in WW2.........so don't lecture me. The US had only 2% of the total allied losses in world war 2 so spare me the tears. This is a movie......it's a fictional account!!!!!!!! of what happened on D-Day.......America got of very lightly in world war 2 compared to most other nations.
@Aussiephil99 yeah you've made it pretty obvious that you've forgotten about world war 2, and common sense. very lighty? apparently you dont know anything about the pacific either
They could only concentrate on 1 squad for most of the film, the Americans were still by far the worst hit during the initial landings. They also expected to lose 2/3s of their paratoopers to secure the landing. I don't think the movie sets out to disregard the Commonwealth, Chinese, Russians etc it just can't include them for the sake of it. It's like saying Enemy at the Gate is bad for not mentioning American involvement in the war.
@Chinomareno, rubbish Enemy at the Gates was set on the eastern front and didn't involve US or British soldiers. D-Day involved soldiers from the US, UK and Canada as well as thousands of airman and naval personnel from the US and the British Commonwealth. From my experience of youtube Americans tend to have a very poor knowledge of WW2...basically because of US war movies (like this) and the US biased history channel. They basically think the US beat the germans on their own which is Bullshit!
@Aussiephil99 idk what kind of bullshit propaganda they put in your minds. D-Day WAS NOT FICTIONAL you need to get off americas ass, facts are facts american units were hit the hardest on omaha. And guess what its an american movie so of course its gonna be about americans dipshit, you dont see the chinese making war movies about the 101st airborne now do you.
@egone123......listen fart breath...........of course D-Day isn't fictional. But this film is..............there was no Private Ryan,...there are many inaccuracies in this film as there are in most war films
@Aussiephil99 there may have been no ryan, but there was 2,499 american soldiers,2,700 british troops, and 359 canadians that have there life for all of us and i respect that tremedously and if you dont like that than that is your own personal problem, i dont try to start fights on youtube like you, i learn about the men and women who ended them
@egone123 ...you've changed your tune now your talking about British and Canadian troops........I was merely pointing out the complete lack of knowledge Americans have about WW2....and that they didn't win it on their own ....as many think. This lack of knowledge is perpetuated by hollywood war films like this
You insolent prick! I'm Australian and embarrassed that you'd write something like this. If you knew anything you would know that civilians suffered the most. That said, Americans had the highest military casualty estimate of all the allied countries that actually aided in resolving the war, more than 400,000 KIA! Also be mindful that more than 2000 soldiers died on that tiny stretch of beach.
I have no idea what you're on, or why? If I were you I would leave it at that!
@ElDuorPaso ...your not Australian..your too stupid. The US's per capita losses were far lower then Great Britain...Australia...New Zealand Canada...and many other countries....surely you don't expect New Zealand to lose 400,000...when their pop in in 1945 was only 1.8 million. Britainn lost around the same as the US but has 1/4 the population. The USSR had far more to do with the end of WW2 in Europe than the yanks...they have 20 million dead to prove it.
@ElDuorPaso ...perhaps you don't know what per capita means you thick shit. But per capita losses are the fairest and most accurate way of determining the effect a war had on a country. Go back to school yourself...and read some books as claearly you have no idea what you are talking about.
"Thick shit" -The language and grammar used by yourself would best suit you as likely being constipated.
Per capita is not commonly used as the most accurate method. The evidence based figure is. Per capita is a statistic based on that figure. Which is a Latin derivative, meaning: per head/per person. And is most commonly used in social science/statistics.
Now since you're talking about losses, a per capita estimate ignores a fundamental aspect of loss/death. Personal loss...
@ElDuorPaso ...what do you mean ignores personal loss!!!...........are you saying a country that has a .57 per capita loss has suffered less?....I have no idea what you are talking about.
For every small town in the US with 10 names on it's memorial...a similar sized NZ, Aust or British town has double or more.............that is personal loss!!!!
No. And I have no idea how I can make it more clearer. Per capita estimates are based on averages. Just as per capita income. There are still those who earn much more and those who earn less. Therefore it is inaccurate.
Now, using the same principle to account for the dead is also inaccurate.
I do not presume that a country would suffer less or more, the UK suffered extensively! My point is that by your statistical approach you dishonour the soldier by labeling him a statistic.
I just also realised that you previously wrote - "The USSR had far more to do with the end of WW2 in Europe than the yanks...they have 20 million dead to prove it."
Did they? Well that is extremely arguable, since a tonne of that figure was due to Stalin himself. And numbers don't mean anything! The Russian climate did more for the Russians than the Russians did for themselves.
Don't let your prejudices cloud your thought. Oh and "stay in school"!
"The Pacific" is not Shit Yoda, It Is The Shit! and Combat against the Japs was way Shittier than against the Krauts. At least the Wehrmacht knew how to surrender.
@yoda2287 What?!? U fuckin think The Pacific is shit. Well let me tell you something: "The Jap I know. The Japeneese soldier, he has been at war since u were in fucking diappers!!! Sgt. John Basilone.
This Is So Much More Than Just A Movie. The Part At 1:02 When The Music Is Just Right And Tom Hanks Character Completely Breaks Down, Is Devastatingly Beautiful.
i have never seen this movie personally i think it would be hard to beat platoon which is such an amzing movie but i want to see this one to compare this trailer is great and really seems like it maybe can beat platoon
@TheShart1234 this movie is not just a war film, it shows you the brotherhood that our military shares these men didnt even know Private Ryan but they went and got him anyway.
no offence to any americans but u did come in late 4 2 wars and claimed alot of of the glory when us brits and frenchies did alot of the work before the usa and lost more men while doing so. no offence because we still won it and taught those nazi a lesson.
It´s a shame that speilberg chose to make it americans vs nazis, ignoring all the British, canadian, Australian and French soldiers that were involved in WW2.
right but spielberg is american so he decided to make a movie for people who actually for directly for him and HIS own counrty. not showing disrespect to any of the other countries or anything
Platoon was better than this because it showed that western soldiers are not all heroic and moral. It shows just how war can change nice young men into vicious killers who rape and pillage civillians.
history is written by winners...United States of America has been, was, and always will be a fascist country. By "defending their interests" they will get to the point of rulling the whole world
Cross of Iron, Das Boot, Letters from the Iwo Jima, Brotherhood,9th Company, Downfall, Battle of Britain, there are many excellent war films. The difference with SPR was that it managed the extraordinary feat of grabbing the audience by the heart and really making you care. It may not be hyper accurate but I have yet to meet anyone who was not moved by it. It brought WW2 and the sacrifices for freedom into the conciousness of a new generation. That in itself makes it a truly great film.
Why everyones are saying this is the best war movie, when this isn't.
Cross of Iron, Das Boot, Letters from the Iwo Jima and The Unknown soldier feom the 1955 are much better. Of course Ryan is awesome too, but as a war movie I like those that I submitted before.
Haven't you saw classics such as Das Boot, Cross of Iron, Tuntematon sotilas or Letters from Iwo Jima? I could say one of them would be the best war movie, but not an american propaganda film like Ryan.
these were real soldiers they fought to protect their country but in today's war there is truly no reason to fight in Iraq its just a waste of precious lives...... we should always remember and honor the soldiers who lived and died for all of us so when u see a veteran or memorial please take a long moment of silence and thank them
My friend you are a fucking ignoramous there are many reasons to be in Iraq. I dont agree that we should have gone there but to say that there is no reason to fight in Iraq is a fucking stupid ass thing to say.
Some of you may be too young to remember Patton. I highly suggest you see this movie. Made in 1970 I think. It does not look like a 40 year old movie.
One of my favorite movies. And as a Ryan whose grandpa served in WW2 - its very personal. The only part my grandpa said was not at all accurate was in the beginning when an entire transport of men fell to gun fire alone. According to him, that did not happen; now one or two buddies were hit by gun fire, sure, but an entire transport - no. Now, the enormous long range German guns - those did in fact take out an entire transport of men on the beach.
I think that every High School kid around my age should see this move. As well as Band of Brothers, and Wind Talkers. They just dont understand how many men have given their lives for them. How many men were killed just to stop one man and all of his followers. People need to be thankful for what our boys did (especially the French) because we could have stayed home and let them take over the rest of the world.
well spielberg crafted it in a way where it felt like you were on shoulder of the soldiers, and I know that the beginning scene didn't happen exactly the way it was portrayed, but nonetheless, it felt so real, now i might have misused the word surreal, but nobody really knew what this invasion was actually like and spielberg just about mastered it.
I saw it when it came back to the theater which is rare for movies to come back, but this one did at least in my area, the theater was sold out, it was so emmotional they had to escourt older guys out of the theater, they might have been in that d day invasion. the whole movie was awesome! This one of the greatest war movies ever made!! Truely epic and emmotional!
Ok son, you believe that, maybe once you grow up abit and realise that santas not real and that you dont have to follow a religion you will realise that you are wrong. Till then i advise you pay attention in your english class since your grammar is a bit poor and pay extra attention in your history class also..for obvious reasons.
two greatest movies ever made... Forest Gump and Saving Private Ryan... and while Denzel, Hopkins and others are amazing... Hanks is the greatest ever... period
I saw the original VHS Color version that has the more Gray tint and dull look throughout the movie. It looked really good because it made the battle sequences look hard and gritty. But then people started complaining that they couldn't see fucking shit so they changed the tint of it to a greenish blue effect like you see on the DVD version, which looks nice but just not as appealing to me.
Everytime when I see this trailer it just depresses me because of how those men died for their country EVERYONE in The United States of America should remember the soldiers who fought in WW2.
fake trailer.. home made.. a bit rubbish

A per capita estimate ignores personal loss. So how many people feel anything for an estimate that closely resembles the USA's: 0.33 per capita.
When in fact, there were families, that lost 3 or 4 sons.
Indeed, you should do more than just read books, read them again, and make sure you got your facts right!

"The Pacific" is not Shit Yoda, It Is The Shit! and Combat against the Japs was way Shittier than against the Krauts. At least the Wehrmacht knew how to surrender.

no offence to any americans but u did come in late 4 2 wars and claimed alot of of the glory when us brits and frenchies did alot of the work before the usa and lost more men while doing so. no offence because we still won it and taught those nazi a lesson.

right but spielberg is american so he decided to make a movie for people who actually for directly for him and HIS own counrty. not showing disrespect to any of the other countries or anything

inamonianim vietnam was a totally different from world war two, both films are great in their own right you can't really compare them
MrFreeman420 1 year ago
Platoon was better than this because it showed that western soldiers are not all heroic and moral. It shows just how war can change nice young men into vicious killers who rape and pillage civillians.
Now, go ahead ad thumbs down me.

in my opinion, TaeGukGi was the best war movie ever made. I recommend it and check it out sometime.

LafyaBolloxsov 1 year ago 3
Why everyones are saying this is the best war movie, when this isn't.
Cross of Iron, Das Boot, Letters from the Iwo Jima and The Unknown soldier feom the 1955 are much better. Of course Ryan is awesome too, but as a war movie I like those that I submitted before.

these were real soldiers they fought to protect their country but in today's war there is truly no reason to fight in Iraq its just a waste of precious lives...... we should always remember and honor the soldiers who lived and died for all of us so when u see a veteran or memorial please take a long moment of silence and thank them

You're right that war in Iraq is waste of time, but americans fought for protecting their country only at the pacific front.

EamonnRyan8 2 years ago 3
God bless those men who died fighting over there. God bless every soldier fighting ever in the history of mankind. :')

Konukun 2 years ago

bud the French have not forgotten what we americans did, but remember all the other allies who fought with us

one of the most surreal war films ever, but i would have to say that The Deer Hunter was better than both. just my opinion
crakajack3 2 years ago 2
surreal in what way, now i am not trying to bash you or anything, just curious to see why you think of it this way
davcas113 2 years ago 2
well spielberg crafted it in a way where it felt like you were on shoulder of the soldiers, and I know that the beginning scene didn't happen exactly the way it was portrayed, but nonetheless, it felt so real, now i might have misused the word surreal, but nobody really knew what this invasion was actually like and spielberg just about mastered it.
hope that answers your question

This movie is so unrealistic. There's no way they would risc 8 lifes over 1, and they're right. War is war, it's not fair.
Besides that, the action sequences are pretty good.
Check out "The Deer Hunter". That is the best war movie ever. It shows you how things really are in a war.

Ok son, you believe that, maybe once you grow up abit and realise that santas not real and that you dont have to follow a religion you will realise that you are wrong. Till then i advise you pay attention in your english class since your grammar is a bit poor and pay extra attention in your history class also..for obvious reasons.

I saw the original VHS Color version that has the more Gray tint and dull look throughout the movie. It looked really good because it made the battle sequences look hard and gritty. But then people started complaining that they couldn't see fucking shit so they changed the tint of it to a greenish blue effect like you see on the DVD version, which looks nice but just not as appealing to me.
zimpiko28 2 years ago
Everytime when I see this trailer it just depresses me because of how those men died for their country EVERYONE in The United States of America should remember the soldiers who fought in WW2.
