Often I wonder (since the premium is truth) how far one might get w/o the credential of 'spiritual teacher' w/o the robes or the monestary, w/o the protections enjoyed by that certainty.

ie., being jobless, staving off hunger for a family of 5. Or just plain hungry, biological desperation.

Forgive me. As a longtime 'buddhist practitioner' ordinary person I question the politically incorrect issue of handing over our intelligence to conditional appearances either.

@deckchairs1 I believe there is plenty of sense in what you say. But I also think that it might be useful to look at spiritual teachers' background and their life experiences which led them to follow the path of spirituality. If you look at Pema or Eckhart Tolle for example it is apparent that they both had very down-to-earth painful experiences prior to embarking on the way they chose.
