Thanks for all the info your given me about everything first off. I got another question, I got a 15 Memphis Mojo and an 1000 watt sony xplod amp (cheap) but it goes out after 30 minutes of it playin. Could this be an electrical problem or a cooling problem. I got a fan for it, just havent put it in yet. Thoughts? :)

Wait, so I shouldnt be playing with my amp gain / bass boost stuff to maximise the bass? And if you accidently push your sub past the max and blow a voice coil you can use the other (if its dual/quad?) ... learning new things all the time.

@xianos707 - Yes, messing with the bass boost is a recipe for disaster lol - and yes, if you blow a coil on a DVC, you can use just one, and likewise, if you blow a couple coils on a QVC, you can run the other 2 coils.

@exoabigdeal I have a question for ya. I ordered a pair of Audiobahn 1571T dual 4 ohm subwoofers and it looks like it has 8 voice coils. There are two positives and negatives on each side. I wanted to wire them down to a 1 ohm load on my Hifonics Brutus Z1700.1 monoblock amp but dont have any idea where to start. Ive wired 2 voice coils to a 1 ohm load but never seen a sub with 8. Do they wire up the same way?

I know what you mean. I do more home audio stuff but anyways i got an EQ for pretty cheap the other day. i hooked it up to the stereo, and it worked great. but what i didnt know was the volume was cranked on the EQ. so i slammed it and it broke all of the glue in both of my sub boxes. I was already havin a bad week. so I fix the box and then i hear an odd noise when the bass hits. thought i tore something but luckly it was just somethin rattling. what a relief.

Part2. Clipping can cause thermal failure, but also can to much power. So as long as you don't have both together, or unless you know the early warning signs, you shouldn't have a problem.

I've abused the hell out of some drivers before, yet never had one "blow" without me doing it on purpose. I mean there are usually a few easy to spot warning signs before a coil let's go. And ignoring these are usually what gets people in trouble.

Thats caused by heat, not clipping. If clipping was such a big deal, it would cause the driver to blow instantly with a square wave. But that's rarely ever the case. Only ways for a driver to blow are mechanical or thermal.

Also, just wanted to point out, clipping doesn't directly kill a sub.

Heat/to much power does. If clipping was the cause, you kill a sub with half power. But that's not the case.

Now, clipping does cause more heat, but still, the sub has to be close to its limits before clipping can really kill it.

But for the most case with sub terminals, the positive is always on the left when your looking at it. So if you spin it around to the other side, the positive will be on the left also.

So basically when you look from the top, they will be opposites if you look down. But that's just how most manufactures do things.
