The first launch I was filming and I let a member of the Performance BMW magazine try the launch control but he didn't keep his foot planted to the floor after initial launch which meant the car aborted the fully automatic launch and the automatic gear up-shifts hence it bounced of the limiter for a while until he realised and pulled the +SMG paddle. During a normal launch, if you don't take your foot off the pedal at all it will do the launch and all upshifts

WOW i would love an M5 but i heard that SMG III is the let down..? is this really true in the real world? we are thinking of getting one but still on contemplating on this topic.

we currently have a dual clutch R36 which shifts damn fast.

although i like the manualise shifting sound on the single clutch systems.

@Minsk45 There is no official limit on number of times you can use LC but it is logged and the number of launches can be viewed by BMW dealers so if you went in with a ruined clutched and they saw excessive use they might say it's not a warranty issue. Rumors of 5 to 7 launches have been flying around but I did 20+ in one day and I still had a new clutch and flywheel under warranty.

Where are you based? If you are in the USA and have the crippled US LC it's not too harsh so don't worry too much.

@scoopzuk Thanks for the info much appreciated, I'm based in Europe so mine launches around the 4-5k RPM range. It can be a bit violent on the clutch as you know and the first three gears try to find traction as the roads here are a bit soft. I just installed an Eisenmann exhaust, could I have gained 10-15 hp do you think?

@scoopzuk I've got an '07 Euro spec with Eisenmann exhaust so 4k RPM LC is quite the experience, apparently 'a bit' loud for some passengers:) Had a Porsche Carrera 4S tailing me the other day, a woman, didn't even need P500. How are you on MPG? I get anywhere from 10-14 and very difficult to get much higher unless it's highway driving... too bad BMW couldn't sort out the fuel consumption but I like how it's naturally aspirated as opposed to the new one coming out with the V8 TT.

@Minsk45 Daily driving is P500 DSC on, EDC on comfort. M button programmed for EDC Sport and MDM setting for DSC and that's used for spirited country roads, S6 and DSC off I normally reserve for track days or very dry roads which we don't have that often in the UK.

@holmansmashbros kind of, you press a sequence of buttons (turn off traction control, enable S6 fastest gear changes) then simply hold the SMG gear lever forward and floor the throttle and your revs rise but sit at around 4k rpm and when you release the lever you launch.

@scoopzuk you know that you can regulate on the launch control so you can rev it to 5,5k before launching ? simply hold the gear lever forward full throttle, and you turn it up/down by adjusting with the cruise control :)

Yes LC is standard on all M5 except for the manual 6spd which is only available in the USA.

There are 2 different types depending on where you are located. There is the USA version which is a "crippled" version, only allowing launch from 1,500 rpm. Then there is the normal LC that the rest of the World have which allows you to alter launch rpm from 3,500 to 5,500 depending on tyres, temperature, rain, etc.

This video is of my UK M5 so it has the standard LC and launches were done from 4,500 rpm.

But on a track? Hahaha, look up Nurburgring ring times, until the CTS-V, the M5 was the fastest midsized-Saloon car IN THE WORLD around that track.

Uhm...magazines have shown the M5 to be faster against the 06' - 10' E63/CLS 55's.

The M5 would take them in the track and after the quarter mile. Stock for stock, the M5 would walk them on a roll. Only the CTS-V and then Panamera Turbo S is faster than the E60. And only barely.

LC i so hard on the car, if u read the manual is strongly states that u should do it only once every couple of hundered miles. You did a couple of times in one session, car says ouch.

no need to be rude, back when i bought my M5 in 06 the 7smg was the only trans available.. after a great deal of bad reviews and unhappy m5 buyers they decided to offer the 6spd manual as well... i happen to love the smg however especially in nyc traffic where i weave in and out of lanes and need to shift and still steer haha  but yeah relax buddy it isnt that serious.. it wasnt avail at first he is just a few years late with his intel haha
