wow, what memories, I grew up in Whitten, I would have been 10 years old in 1968. As soon as we would hear the basketballs down at the park, we would get there as soon as possible to watch in awe as Denise and Cindy practiced for hours on end. My sisters went to school with them. They were the hometown heros for sure !
Vetrans' Memorial Auditorium, the Mecca of Iowa High School Basketball, i wish the state tournaments were still played there cause Wells' Fargo Arena doesn't have the same feel to it.
I remember watching this game on TV, a bit over 40 years ago. My first impression was "Do these girls ever miss?" Shot after shot, nothing but net. It couldn't have been more exciting if it had been scripted. Two clutch free-throws in the last seconds of the regulation to send it into overtime/
That was a great video! I am not from Iowa and I have never heard of these two teams, but this was an interesting look at the history of six-on-six basketball. Nice job!
I was at this game!! Folks growing up in Iowa know how big 6-player girl's bball was back in the 60's. The small towns ruled. Cyndy Long is a hoot in the interview (plus she killed Everly's strategy in the game.) Both teams' uniforms are unforgiveable - hopefully they were all burned!
I actually still have the uniform I wore in this game. Years later, Larry Johnson our coach, sent the uni to me as a request for a Halloween costume. The uniforms had been "retired". When I look at the program for that tourney, there were only a few teams still wearing the skirts. By the time I was a senior the skirts were retired altogether. I know that was a sad time for a lot of guys! Jan Scharnberg
I never saw a 6 on 6 game till I saw this video but I love those uniforms! Very cute, very dear, and Ladies played the game, and they could shoot! Jonny Egan
What a treat! That's Jill Scharnberg's little sister on the vid. The best game in tournament history was actually Everly vs. Guthrie Center in 1963.. but hey I'll take anything on YouTube.
I think Everly vs Guthrie center in 63 was awesome and Jill was an incredible player. Much better than I was! She was my inspiration but I never lived up to her presence on the court. Jan Scharnberg
Oh God. My family lived in Spencer and we were Cattlefeeder fans throughout the 60's. Jill was fabulous, but you weren't too shabby, Jan. I do recall your last-second shot against George in (I believe) your senior year that put a crucial game into overtime. I always thought that the Everly teams, and fans, showed a lot of class. We always marveled at all those HUGE trophies in the case just outside the Everly gym. Congrats and lotsa love to all former Cattlefeeders everywhere!!!
Thanks for your kind words! A group of my classmates reconnected thanks to the Everly/Union Whitten honor team at the last Girls State tourney in the "Barn". One of their sons coproduced the Youtube video and used footage of a video tape unearthed by that reunion. We are getting together again this week to go to the Clay County Fair! Jan
