円 is the Japanese unit on currency, the yen. You say it like "en". That kanji can also mean "circle". It has an onyomi (chinese derived) reading of エン. It has a kunyomi (Japanese) reading of まる.

丸 is a kanji that can mean "round". It's onyomi reading is ガン. It's kunyomi reading is まる.

まるい either way has a similar meaning. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you use 丸 to say round and 円 is a circle.

Windows' Romanji to Hiragana converter is a little unhelpful un this subject aswell, as typing a double "n" will just turn it into ん.
