I have seen a mother baboon throw her baby at a predator to save herself. When a new leader takes over the troop, he kills all the babies, so the females will go in to heat and mate with him. The mama's might try to stop him, but if it comes down to her getting hurt, she will sacrifice the infant.

We have to stop putting human traits on these things, they run on reaction and instinct. Not right or wrong, just the way the animal kingdom is.
