An excellent lecture on basic economics, which presents the basics (and a bit of the history of the intellectual discipline as well) in a coherent, comprehensible fashion. Thanks very much for posting it.
6:54 - "There's a dichotomy between the people who believe in the free society and the people who believe in a collectivized society."
If that's a dichotomy, it's a false one. It's only through propaganda that people in capitalist countries believe that people in comunist countries are not "free." In fact, Cuban society, for example, has neighborhood councils where everyone makes decisions. Cuba lacks parliamentary elections. So what! They're nothing but a fraud anyway. Look at the US!
@bapyou People who are not permitted to leave their country are not free. The so called "free" people of Cuba die every year by the hundreds trying to escape their country at the risk of drowning, exposure to the sun, being eaten by sharks and being imprisoned by a repressive government if they are caught. Anybody who claims that Cubans are free is simply ignorant.
@MrFreeLibertarian And they all wear grey and fear Big Brother and then a guy in a mask who talked with lots of v's and alliteration came to save them. You're a fucking moron
@kingnat2 WTF? You make about as much sense as every other communist! You now when you post a comment, it's good to have a coherent point! But whatever, yeah Castro never killed any of his own people and he made good on his promise to have free elections! LOL! Keep that crazy train rolling you loser!
@MrFreeLibertarian There has yet to be a true communist state. All attempts of communism have been acted for the purposes of control and power. However, any true democratically communist state (read:not Marxism) would not only succeed, but would thrive. Well, the state wouldn't thrive, for a country to thrive it needs a slave class, but the people would be amongst the happiest in the world.
@RedSkiesAwaitUs There's a reason that there has been no true communist state. It's because of the nature of humans. Everyone in society can't be free to make decisions for the "collective." Of necessity there must be some small group people put in control of planning. Those people will ALWAYS use that power to their advantage and to the advantage of their friends over everyone else. It is basic human nature. True communism can work for fairly small groups but not for entire countries.
The dichotomy between Freedom and Slavery is about private property, which means the right to keep the outcome of your efforts, which not only are YOURS and no one else's but also require time...YOUR time, which is part of your life.
A claim on private property is a claim on portions of your life.
Elections in a Democracy regulate only what is common. It is only under the perversion of Socialism that the private realm having been dismantled becomes an issue for elections and regulation
It's a real shame the people of Cuba will never see your idiotic comment and learn how amazingly "free" they are since the government has banned the Internet over there long ago.
@neonaction That begs the question, if you don't have the education/work skills to get a job at better than minimum wage, why are you having kids that you can't afford? Minimum wage jobs are NOT meant for adults. In the U.S. at least we don't want our citizens to be raising families on minimum wage jobs. We want our people to become educated so that they can aspire to better things. Minimum wage jobs are for kids to work at while they are going through school.
This is only partial truth just like Marxism is. This does not prove that the class struggle does not exist. He assumes that there exists a perfect market. Perfect market does not exist in real world however.
Of course there is such a thing as a class struggle. Have you ever heard of the fucking Civil Rights Movement? Or perhaps The 1936–1937 Flint Sit-Down Strike? Class Struggle exists everywhere, whether you believe it or choose to live in denial. Do deny there is a class struggle, you must be in a financially well position in society to able to say such bullshit.
@PELLOWHEAD "you must be in a financially well position in society to able to say such bullshit."
You got that right. I have never seen a working class person put forth an argument like this well-dressed man is putting forth. It's always someone who's pretty well-off making such an argument.
What so-called "free"-marketeers want is not - as the name suggests - economic actors associating freely; what they want is for business to be free of all & every restriction, unfettered by government or by labor.
Recently I've been reading about the American labor strikes of 19th & 20th centuries during which miners, auto-workers & countless others were murdered by police & corporate thugs because they demanded union recognition, better pay, working conditions, etc.
The title says everything I need to know about this white man's opinion.
Have you read about the labor struggles of the late 19th & early 20th centuries? No? I didn't think so. Those struggles were real. They were not fiction. The capitalists of the day - far from advocating some form of classless society, murdered men, women & children demanding a decent life from those holding real economic power. Tell me some more about this "myth."
@bapyou there is no such thing as class struggle . there is OF COURSE a conflict of interest between particular employers and employees. but there is no CLASS struggle. a capitalist is strongly interested in underpaying to HIS workers but not in underpaying to ALL workers in the world
@vorbeigehende Are you fucking kidding me, the class struggle is world wide. 1% owns 40% of all resources and probably 25% of all goes to SOME BANKER FAMILIES.
Tell me this, how does having debt on all money printed by the fed, reinforce equality. Country's get sucked out of their natural wealth. overtime the world banks inflate the money, and all the debt which can never be payed off, it drains a country leaving the waldburgs rothschilds & etc with a fortune big enough to buy continents
Tell me this, how does having debt on all money printed by the fed, reinforce equality.
FED has nothing to do with class struggle. I understand "class struggle" as a conflict of interest which presumably exists between ALL employers and ALL employees. Currency (and therefore inflation) is a creation of governments
Class struggle has been scientifically proven by philosophers worldwide and is witnessed daily by everybody worldwide... And some twat comes up and says its a fallacy... What a twat!!!
The absence of the class struggle has been scientifically proven by philosophers worldwide and is witnessed daily by everybody worldwide... And some twat comes up and says its a fallacy... What a twat!!!
@vorbeigehende are you telling me there is no division between rich and poor? are we all equal and there is no class struggle? Is not the protests and strikes by the working class an exercise of class struggle, which is lived daily all around the world? Perhaps if you put everything to one side and think of a group of rich people in one single area, then there is no class struggle in that specific area between those people.
@vorbeigehende You'd have to be as ignorant as the subject to think of one small area alone when there is a massive world out there, which should be used for analysing such research before coming up with foolish comments like this lecturer.
Not to mention that the father of Communism, Karl Marx as well as the father of Capitalism, Adam Smith have accepted that their is clearly a division of class, and has been since the history of humans
Do your research before you copy+paste other peoples comms
I just wanted to show that the it-has-been-proven and the it-is-obvious argument is not an argument at all. I actually have big doubts that you watched beyond part 1.
Class struggle is a mere consequence of a system's contradictions: The roles people play in relation to an economic system are different, and imply different intresses. This conflicting intresses bring up a conflict, that is not necessairly violent. Patricians, plebiums, slaves in ancient rome, for instance, classes while the 'panis et circenses' was an act of class struggle.
This video carries many lies spreaded out by the ghost of cold war, if you care about facts, that is...
The brainwashing in this video in very dense. The oversimplifications are dangerous, the interpretations are superficial, the conclusions are drawn from pure reason (based on a bios analisis) alienated from the facts.
But, the denial of the existence of class struggle (by the elites and their "intelectuals") is a very clear element of class struggle: The elites don't want the rest to think about an activity that they (elites) are deeply engaged on. Manufacturing Consent is a very clear exemple.
@MarxistStudant haha, what a beautifully constructed argument in your first paragraph! You could copy and paste that reasoning and apply it to any argument ever written. Brilliant! Did you even watch the video? Who cares?! Why use actual reason when you can just point a finger and say "capitalist!" and win any argument...
Who points fingers here happens to be you. If you want some facts, you can check hunderds of pages of virtual proff on the Manufacuring of Consent, for instance, on many books by Noam Chomsky. Pure reason, when alienated from reality, allows terrible rationalizations. Milton Friedman's prtious little system FAILED, wants a proff? Check out Chile during Pinochet's dictatorship - supported by Frideman AND Hayek - where poverty increased from 9% to over 55%.
if this dude had ever been a worker or had any exposure to the working class and their struggles he would realise that it is himself that is under an illusion. workers are fucked over every day by employers, this is no mystery. this is simply capatalist apologetics. this guy is a mental midget next to Marx.
Interesting he claims, as if a priori, that freedom is opposed to collective society. This is true if by "free" he means the freedom to get rich at the expense of others. If there is no actual class antagonism in society then he should explain that the the millions of workers in the world who beg to differ...explain that is just "appears" as if they are being shafted by their bosses but actually things are peachy..
@davisoneill wanna back up those claims with evidence? i haven't watched the video yet so might agree with you, but your comment is useless because it is just an assertion.
If only this guy were able to be more engaging.

I'm sure It was before Wal Mart became the Juggernaut that they are today.
Wal Mart destroys small businesses and American manufacturing jobs.
