  • The foam is to prevent fuel frothing. It's original application was for race car tanks to prevent fuel surge.

  • you dont always have to replace the gasket if you take the head off only if its really old and gets torn, but that usually doesnt happen because theyre made of metal

  • thats not how u diagnose a no start at all.

  • @niper99 it wasn't a no start, it was running really crappy due to a bad carb diaphragm. I got it fixed. it just took me a while to diagnose the problem

  • ok dude u dont have a clue, wow lol

  • @niper99 I don't have a clue what you're talking about

  • The sponge is installed at the factory, not all gas tanks have them, leave it in. WHY? Glad you asked, it's to keep it from vapor locking, how do I know glad you asked, I repair small engines.

  • Its to filter out dirt you morons !

  • how come all engines don't have it then, smart guy?

  • when its to ritch the spark plug will be white

  • no that means it's too lean, the sparkplug turns white from overheating.

  • no spark plug get white when ther is too mutch of gas geting in ...

  • Interesting! I hope you fix it :D

  • if you see misty gas blowing back twards you that means that your exuast system is pluged so you need a new muffler most likley

  • looks like carbon build up on the intake vale causing it to not seat properly. and then blowing back thru the carb.

  • yeah those sponges are stock

    mine has one in it

my guess is that it helps collect dirt

or help the gas from splashing around

  • yeah that sponge stock it was in my go kart i hard a five horse briggs and it had that samething

  • it's on my list of things to check

  • that foam piece in the tank is supposed to be there, i had an identical motor on my go-kart with it. i don't really see the purpose though, stuff can still get through it if its supposed to be a filter.

  • Hmm maybe it's to prevent the fuel from sloshing around

  • boy thats one dirty piston

  • that must of used to been a roto tiller engine beacuse my roto tiller has a 5 hp briggs and has the sponge in the gas tank is stock that is to catch dirt from being a dirt roto tiller that sponge is normal

  • it's on construction equipment- that shit gets dirty too.

  • yup I forgot to mension that

  • Dude, i am loving the VW bug. Is it yours?

  • oh yeah he had vids up of it on his coolbluelights account i think.

  • well my dad's lawn tractor had a valve sticking, but since it is 2cyl it still ran, so I put 2 cycle gas in it and changed the oil, and it is working quite well now.

  • I would decarbonize it and change the oil which should help. Bring it up on compression stroke, a little before TDC and see if the intake valve is seating by trying to spin it.. tap it lightly with a hammer before cleaning it and that should loosen up anything on the seat. It does seem like a stuck valve, but it could be a malfunction of the auto decompression if this engine is equipped.

  • Ok thanks, I'll check that in daylight. I'm also wondering if the muffler might be carbonized and blocked because it looks like it was running way too rich for a long time

  • odd foam deal- My guess would be it is there to keep fuel from splashing out during transportation.

  • it's stock it's to catch dirt that engine must of been on a roto tiller our roto tiller has that and it's stock

  • yeah that foam inside the tank is from the factory not sure why they put it in there but i have had a couple of 5hp briggs with the foam in the tank so it no biggy man
