  • I went to Zurich to watch this. Karpov and Kasparov were the last to finish. Karpov won all games. Anand and Kramnik were the first to finish. Except Kortchnoi and topalov, others won all games.

  • @saranyan1 Karpov didnt win all games he won 17 drew 7 and lost 1

  • Who won?

  • I wonder who beat him? Maybe the guy with the Bowtie!!!

  • Karpov ( 2541) - Hort ( 2605), Alekhine Mem 1971

... just one example of a SPECTACULAR Karpov game.

    1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 c5xd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e6 6. g4!

( Karpov goes for the Keres-Attack against Hort's Scheveningen Sicilian!)

    6. ..Nc6 7. g5 Nfd7 8. Be3 a6 9. f4 Be7 10. Rg1 Nxd4 11. Qxd4 e5 12. Qd2 e5xf4 13. Bxf4 Ne5 14. Be2 Be6 15. Nd5 Bxd5 16. e4xd5 Ng6 17. Bf4 h6 18. g5xh6 Bh4+ 19. Kd1 g7xh6 20. Bxh6

  • ( Hort sacrifices a pawn for activity...)

    20. ... Bf6 21. c3 Be5 22. Rg4 !!

( Karpov makes a brilliant move, this rook controls many vital squares)

    23. ... Qf6 24. h4 Qf5 25. Rb4 Bf6 26. h5 Ne7 26. Rf4 Qe5 27. Rf3 Nxd5

( Hort gets his pawn back, but his King is stuck in the centre and karpov's pieces are very active)

    28. Rd3 Rxh6 29. Rxd5 Qf5 30. Rd3 Qh1+ 31. Kc2 Qxa1 32. Qxh6 Be5 33. Qg5

    Hort resigned. ( 1-0)

  • I'm sorry, Hort did not resign; he lost because he was out of time, but the black position was lost anyway.

  • In his prime KARPOV was at the same level as KASPAROV and FISCHER.

  • If not beyond them.

  • I agree... He was the greatest tactician and probably the best of all times in end game..My favorite player..His former teacher Botwinnik said once' His game doesn't seem very spectacular and sometimes even boring but most PROFOUND I ever saw. .Enough said I think.

  • @sidewinder188 Karpov was and is a strategist, not a tactician. Tal was a tactician.

  • @sidewinder188 Yes, I agree with your comparision of Karpov compared to Fischer and Kasparov. Karpov is 12 years older than Kasparov, which I think worked in Kasparov's favour during their epic matches from '84 to '90. Karpov never quite overturned Kasparov, but the matches were all close, hard fought, and mentally demanding. I think if it'd been a younger version of Karpov, ie, 5 or 10 years younger, playing Kasparov at that time, I reckon he could well have won a couple of those matches.

  • He´s the Super Grandmaster

  • Unbelievable. Thanks for posting.I really like Karpov,I am fan of him :D.Upload more chess vids.Good work!!!

  • Still very strong and formidable. Thanks for posting! Karpov's one of my favorites.
