  • wow...Omar is tripping hard!...but he is sober! ...openminded being.

  • it seems like omar is very unhappy with these questions

  • I love how honest they are.Oh, and if Cedric doesn't like heavy metal, who cares? By the sound of it he's on about the screamo kind or boring repetitive low tuned riffs over and over again. I like some metal; the good kind thats unique and interesting, but a lot of metal fans are really closed minded and "if it's not heavy it's not good" seems to be their mentality when really there's loads of awesome music out there.

    ...Abba's kickass though. XD

  • To those who call them hipster, they are signed to a major label, and performed on MTV. And what Cedric is saying is that Metal has the general feel of "evil" or "anger" with it. You don't find people getting knocked out in most shows, other than Metal ones. Metal also is difficult to take seriously musically. Playing in a dropped tuning limits the movement in keys, or nature, which is why you can pick up the general "heavy" metal sounds, and generalize it.

  • At the Drive-Inn ...:P

  • Anyone with an education and some logic can see right through their bullshit...They should stick to dressing like it's the 70's and making the same non-progressive garbage...

  • @papicops Shut yo mouth! If you don't like progressive rock or their "non-progressive garbage" go and listen to a different band. Their music is amazing in every way and who gives if they bullshit if their music is great?

  • wow their interviews are so boring, just let them do what they do best; ROCK OUT!lol

  • people are acting like Cedric basically said fuck metal, he was referring to the attitude and the die hard fans of it. Same can be said about every genre. Personally I hate the metalheads who judge the music on its heaviness rather than its overall quality. Its annoying and close minded.

  • fuck this. i don't like their attitude

  • those 'why' questions are important, and actually nobody reals asks why and nobody authenticly answers. i dont think they really know why they are making their music, because thats what it also sounds like. their music sounds not authentic

  • Hey, Russell Brand.

  • so bedlam in goliath was literally written by the devil. hahah

  • Remember, that little bastard did vocals for Mastodon. HYPOCRIT.

  • eating a FALAFEL!!!!

  • well i like all type of metal but metal is going down man it sucks and its all these new bands that suck no more good bands thats the problem

  • @x666slipknot All these new shitty metal bands are all about their appearance, or as cedric puts it "the costume" of it. Like Slipknot, Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, Children of bodom are just a few i can think of. They all try to look extra cool, yet all of them suck ass and cannot play their instruments for shit. It seems as if most metal is going in the same downhill direction toward rap and hip hop.

  • They are dumb tryhards and musically speaking anyone not ADHD diagnosed who loves them has serious aesthetics issues

  • @tobilius haha hell ya!

  • I was in until they suddenly started talking about fluff

  • These kids are fucking smart.

  • still hipster

  • Self important morons but then again most hard rock musicians are. ABBA a cult? Give me break. Lighten up!

  • @TheReligionkills lmao give HIM a break. Hes only half serious. Cedric actually loves abba. He even plays them a lot before Volta shows.

  • I like their music but this video really makes them look like jackasses

  • @adj789 they are jackass' but they can be. they are genius'

  • @adj789 false...

  • their so contradict and strangely smart, yet hilarious.

    good music they make.

  • Comment removed

  • yeaah lol

  • hahahahah fuck abba.

  • People, shut the fuck up. We all know they are influenced by metal like Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, and so on. I am pretty sure the interviewer asked them something about evil in heavy metal music because the talked about the ouija board lyrics and so on. He is obviously talking about heavy metal that is all theatrics and is about being heavier and eviler than the last band. Honestly, its the truth that its pretty boring if all you are trying to do is make songs about killing people.

  • @BigTymerPimp Before you call metal in general was boring you may wanna correct you knowledge of it. Led Zeppelin is in no way metal

  • @DeausEXMachina666 What are you talking about? Metal is not boring, but stereotypical metal is. Bands like Mastodon and Porcupine Tree are the furthest thing from boring or stereotypical. And Led Zeppelin was totally metal. Are you high? Just because they would throw in some acoustic doesn't mean they aren't metal. The banshee vocals, ballsy guitar distortion, and the pounding drums. Even in the 70s they were called heavy metal. You're the one who needs to check their knowledge.

  • @BigTymerPimp P Tree is not a "metal band." They sometimes employ the technique to very tastefull and logical affect. But to semantically confine a monumentally talented group to a very esoteric genre is insulting. I'm a jazz and fusion guitarist, there is a vast difference in the complexity of the artistic languages of metal and more expressively valid forms. Metal is minimally expressive because it's easy to "pull off," so to speak.

  • @vaporarrows Well, I agree PT is NOT a metal band. That would be a crime to label them purely as metal. True, they do incorporate their metal influences sparingly. I love PT old and new, and I never meant to confine them. However, I do consider their more recent works to be prog-metal more than anything when you compare it to their older works. I'm actually practicing to become a jazz-fusion guitarist, and I know what you mean.

  • @BigTymerPimp I personally wouldn't go that far, metal stylings are certainly a minority in the breadth of "The Incident" (great show in Chi-Town last year btw, my old man was very impressed.) I acknowledge that the contemporary sound is much heavier than before, but I think they're still solidly in the realm of prog rock. To each his own anyway. Good luck with guitar, I implore you to find Al Di Meola's Splendido Hotel, it's a must hear fusion guitar album.

  • @DeausEXMachina666 according to my music teacher. zeppelin is metal. but i think he stated that one of the biggest components of "metal" music is the fact that the guitar and the bass play the same thing side by side. some, not all but some, songs from zeppelin have that component. making it metal. but they are also many other things as well. just fyi

  • whats the name of the song in backwards ??? anybody know ??? sounds really good !!!

  • @ancestral77 It's called, Wax Simulacra

  • Comment removed

  • It's a simplistic truth covered in arrogance. If most people disagree it's because what they say is probably true and truth hurts.

  • Cedric don´t know anything about Metal Music, I used to had respect for this band.

  • @CannibalZombieKiller I'm pretty sure the interviewer asked something about evil in heavy metal music. Cedric is probably referring to Death Metal and all metal like that, that acts "evil" and are all theatrics where every song has the word knife in it and has an E power chord to go along with it. They have respect for metal. They're friends with Mastodon. They're influenced by King Crimson and many other early metal artists. He is probably speaking of stereotypical metal and the fans of it.

  • @CannibalZombieKiller All metal sounds the same, and it's all the lyrics are about vikings or european paganism. Get a grip.

  • @turokcalde Ignorant

  • they jammed. i liked. they spoke. i left.

  • man...love.

  • I love how real Omar and Cedric are. Viva Mexico & Puerto Rico!

  • dude do these guys even tour???they either dont or fail to show up in bakersfield california cuz ive been wanting to watch em play for years and ive never got to!!!!!!!!!

  • can you put up this vid but put the questions in english?

  • metal sucks...o no metal heads are mad whot he fuck cares TMV doesn't which is why they're awesome.

  • I think they should consider doing an interview System of a Down style.

check out their interview for Uranium, Omar, you may change your mind

  • When I first heard these guys speak I thought they came across a tad arrogantly, but then I gave them more time and now I see they're actually refreshingly humble!!

  • All these two men speak is the truth.

  • right on d-bags...right on..

  • Jesus stop winging people, its Cedric's opinion, I like metal but who the fuck cares.

  • I like how Omar breaks their song-structures down to almost a cookie-cutter format when they're soo much more. But I really DON'T how he starts talking shit about At the Drive in. I know there's bad blood between them but it just seems really condescending and that entire big truck little truck metaphor was unecessary. It's music; if you don't like what they're playing just leave it at that.

  • This makes me think that these guys really want to be taken seriously and take themselves way too seriously.

  • Some of the band has a metal band,, there bass player was a 80's star so don't think there anti metal.

  • Douchebaggery!

  • Hes not talking about all metal just shit like dethklok concept shit, ya know, @nmur0287and mudvayne i doubt hes talking about, only thing medical they use was L.D 50 but its taken from a an interview with Terrence Mckenna , its the guy talking in the beginning of the monolith!

  • i love omar's constant use of metaphors.

  • "Heavy Metal--when it's pre-thought of and all your lyrics are like medical terms and it just becomes sort of...it's it's kinda funny, it's not taken seriously."

Oh yea, cause bands like Cannibal Corpse, Dethklok, Obituary, and King Diamond/Mercyful Fate are SUPPOSE to be taken seriously...

A lot of metal is bland, generic, and full of cliches, but that's true about ANY music genre.

It's fine if Cedric doesn't like metal, but who the fuck made him the music authority?

  • @mrperez666 it's Cedric's opinion, not an authority opinion... are you offended? Get a life...

  • Calling ABBA the evil is a Joke. Cedric is a fuckin Joke.

  • @TheElephant79 ABBA us actally very funny and scary at the same time in a distopian kind of way. Apparently for me and for Cedric, and not for you. But Cedric is no joke, even if you don't respect his opinion.

  • they should have a mutual respect for other genres of music, they dont have to like it but at least not talk shit about it.

  • @Huitzel TMV have the broadest and most mixed type of music I have seen around in a lot of time. As I think Frank Zappa would put it: no one has the right not to be offended, including you.

  • not all metal bands try to be all evil and shit. Heaviness in music can be a cool aspect if its used the right way, but yeah I'd say he's right about that for the most part...

  • @Roodski I think he is right in regards to the whole Slipknot/mudvayne kind of stuff out there. But he also displays some ignorance in a way because he obviously hasn't listened to stuff like Sunn O, Neurosis. Isis, Cult Of Luna etc who are all bands who are actually great.

  • @nmur0287 he's not ignorant, it's simply his opinion.

  • I think that if you are playing music just for the sake of composing some extreme and dificult song then your playing for the wrong reason. Thats like someone picking up a guitar not because they even considered playing Bass but because guitar is "cool".... Anyway i agree that alot of metal is cliche, but i still think if cedric and omar were to say "metal is the best thing since sliced bread" all these negative comments about metal would change and people would go right along with what they say

  • victor wooten once said that each note you play should have something to say, for music is like a language, if your just speaking for the sake of speaking your getting nothing done

  • holy balls. they're geniuses.

  • They're not saying anything good or bad regarding metal, theyre just pointing out that most 'evil' metal bands are very tongue in cheek - something that alot of people don't understand. It's really annoying when people claim that they hate a certain genre of music, especially one that's as diverse as metal. Vaporarrows, take your head out of your arse. Just because you like a comercially successful prog band like TMV doesn't make you a supreme authority on music.

  • Firstly. they flat out say that metal is a "joke;" an insult in my book. Also, being a musician (fusion, spanish, hard rock, prog.) I can verify that the processes of wrought metal are very linear, deprived of artistic credibility. It's extremely easy to compose, it's formulaic by design, anything adventurous and avant garde could not be metal by virtue of metal's parameters. It's just dumb repetitious entertainment, not for the serious artist.

  • you're right, a lot of metal is absolute garbage, but you just have to dig deep enough to find the really good bands. i love fusion, jazz, prog, blues and metal and believe me there is very, very good metal out there, but it is extreeemely rare, but like i said you have to dig. if my first exposure to jazz was kenny g, i would probably hate jazz too.

  • @snaketrails

they say "metal is a joke with that kindof stuff." refering to the fact that most satanic references in metal aren't truely linked to the occult, it's just a facade. don't take their words out of context.

  • @iuhuh10110 kudos!

  • I love omar's metaphors.

  • Thats what weed does to you. hahaha

  • i love how they bash they're record label in every interview lol

  • @revolver375 ! me too lmao!

  • @revolver375 You the the company really give a fuck? As long as the cash keeps coming in I don't see why they would. Mars Volta can't be farther from being corporate sluts...

  • I'm glad someone has the balls to sick it to all those uselessly redundant metal bands. It doesn't take a lot of cognitive ability to write songs like "Hammer Smashed Face." Fuck metal and the conformist drones who "buy" it.

  • you don't know what you're talking about dude,Metal is bigger than you, than me,than everybody,I am a metal fan but I love Mars Volta,I love Jazz,I love old style 50s,60s,Rock n Roll and I love JAZZ,but METAL is my music,so you gotta a problem with that come and tell me into my face and I will laugh at you so hard

  • Whos the tough guy huh?

  • metal sucks. sounds the same.

  • Yeah the serious metalheads are a bit of a sore, but most metalheads I know have a good sense of humor about it and don't make it more than it is. Still, metal has an interesting history and they have the right to enjoy the music.

  • @Waranoa the kind of metal cedric is talking about is not the kind of metal most people listen to. believe it or not, but some heavy metal musicians have some intelligent things to say.

  • @Waranoa But that is what interesting about metal music.---That it has turned some serious themes about human existence into a bit of a joke or entertainment. I don't think most metal heads think of it as serious or scary. These guys are a bit pretentious when it comes talking about music or their creative influences...I can't see anyone intelligent taking them seriously.

  • @papicops who gives a fuck they're music is fucking amazing

  • I think what mars volta is trying to say is that there is more music out there to listen to. I honestly think it's stupid to say any one genre sucks. it's all an opinion but you need to open yourself up more no one cares what music you like or dislike.

  • hahaha they have very funny metaphors to describe their music. Cedric and Omar are some weird/cool/odd/chill fellows. lol

  • These guy's are real Cool...Izzy

  • damn he used a Ouija board to write lyrics

  • yes

  • gotta love The Mars Volta.

  • I think they're just saying the truth. Yes, it's true: Metal isn't evil, interviews are a big lie because your label orders you to do so and so many, and it becomes incredibly repetitive and boring for an artist. And yes, Mars Volta make pop music. I don't see anything cynical behind it...

  • yes because day of the baphomets always reminds me of christina aguilera

  • Me too!!!! How funny is that...

  • im gonna have to quote evh on this matter

"they call it pop becasue its Pop-ular"

  • Man these guys are just The Mans

  • i agree with omar when he talks about people stuck on "the germs", unfortunately i know so many cases like those, i say unfortunately because it really is sad watching someone who isn't able to look in any other direction, it's like a fat bald guy who still wears religiously the same metallica t shirt while it as gotten all faded ...

  • There music is awsome.

Just watching this makes me like them that much more.

    lmao! Used car salesmen.......

  • En cada casi cada entrevista ellos utilizan la sucesión de apertura a esto...

  • I love listening to them talk

  • beautiful band.

  • Omar is hottt. Both of them ;)

  • Comment removed

  • i wanna jump on cedric! :) i can hear him talk or day's

  • i love these dudes, but i seriously couldnt help but laugh when he talked about ABBA haha he was so serious haha

  • lovely metaphors!

  • OMG I KNOW HOW SCARY THE POLYPHONIC SPREE IS!!!!! its creepy how happy they are lol

  • this is the best way i have i've ever heard what it is to be a signed band. i would love to talk to omar.

  • I love all their refrences....hahahah they make me laugh

  • falafel...vegetarians? :O!

  • Wow. Unparalleled honesty... love it.

  • 4 questions....yeah, and, so, what. Art is expression. And If you're expressing the same crap that's been covered by literally thousands of others, of what worth are you artistically? Metal was valid when it was fresh, after Sabbath it got old pretty quick. No linear metal band has had any new ideas for decades. Mars Volta found a new, original way to make art through sound. They are artistically valid, metal isn't. Metal is a side effect of the male "macho" social stigma, indeed a cruel joke.

  • fuckin cool.

  • I think they have made a big mistake personally. The tracks Wax Simulacra and Goliath are great. But their influence puts me off the fact that they need to usestupid boards instead of thinking of somethingthemselves, think how good at the drive in and the early mar volta stuff was. That was becase they didn't need weird influences at the time

  • Do you think the talking board wrote the music too?

  • all volta records have wierd influences. deloused is influenced from a book about an overdose. frances is about a diary found in the car of there friend, jeremy who was in the band.

  • yeah thanks man

thats some pretty cool stuff, i just got their new album and de-loused they have some really interesting shit in their booklets

  • I'm going to agree with you...

  • Self-important? I must have missed that part, because all I saw was complete honesty. At no point did they try to make themselves or their music seem more interesting or impactful than it actually is... take Omar's comments about their song structure. I guarantee that they are some of the only musicians in this genre that will willingly admit that their song structure is simplistic. Pretty much the opposite of self-importance, if you ask me.

  • Well nobody asked you. But as I, you're entitled to your own opinion.

  • You are absolutely right. You've assessed Omar and Cedric's attitude just perfectly...Nothing wrong with these two guy's, or the brilliant music they produce...

    J : )

  • Can a man wear a dress to a football game? There are many thingas to ponder in the spiral.

  • uhhhhh no you two are stupid. these guys are intuitive and creative and original and adventurous.... they're better than all genres because The Mars Volta in it of self is a genre... yes, that's including metal bands.... Cedric and Omar are true musical and intellectual genious

  • Do you drink from the chalice of Cedric and Omar? Is their elixir more potent?

  • they are such intelligent people.

  • If you value childish redundancy and grating unoriginality. Metal is a cultural gimmick. Rush, MV, Porcupine Tree, Tool, Planet X>than all death, thrash, black, power, and all other bands that play only linear metal.

  • don't go there I was Rush fan since the sixties and am a Jethro Tull protege. Emerson Lake and Palmer used to clean my house.

  • couldn't agree more

  • no... every memember of this band is pure talent and innovation

  • Awesome int, thanks for putting this up, haven't seen it before :)
