i think the best place to squabble about art and then call everyone who doesnt agree with me names has to be in the comment section for a video on youtube. hands down.
aside from that, i think its pretty neat this guy got to talk about what he thinks of this art work and then gets to share it with a bunch of interested people.
It make me laugh when all you Twobly lovers get another opinion. His work is a collection of scibbling & massive blobs of dripping paint ... many time he uses these in a formulated way ... on diagonals or done in the same depressing hues. He has a FORMULA to make MONEY on idiots!!! The art world took a no talented hack & made him into something he isn't ... an artist. Just like a mad mad putitng a bow across a violin & making noise ... this is what Twobly does ... just noise.
Good vs Bad, Belgium Chocolate vs chocolate in grocery stores. Aged Scoth & fine wine vs bum ijquor & soda pop wine. The Beatles vs The Bay City Rollers. Come on now, use your heads! The ONLY reason he is famous is because his artist friends & critics helped him. He hit the lottery. His work is pathetic. It is NOT abstract expressionism. there is nothing complicated in his work. It is NOT spontaneous, it is planned CRAPOLA! You can say it's good if you like, but trust me, it's pure SHIT!
This is the work of a jackass who gets stoned & it is just bullshit! This MORON who is having an fucking orgasm over it is a FUCKING MORON who is impressed with his own FUCKING STUPIDITY!!!
The trouble with the art world is people loose their fucking minds & support shit. Seriously. You look at Monet, Van Gogh, Mattise, Picasso, etc ... their work has a soul & meaning. Twombly's work is a collection of SHIT! Ask any child or uneducated person to examine his work ... it would be thrown in the trash. It's like making sense of Yoko Ono's screaming & saying it's music. It aint! Yoko would have NEVER been famous without John Lennon! Like Yoko, this guy was a successful fraud.
i don't get this - why is it this guy is talking about paitings he has never even seen before????? just in books - is it the whole fame over substance thing?
@laurawire Knowledge can be aquired by reading books on a subject and people don't always get the chance to see the art they study, as paintings are in different countries or even private collections. I have studied art history and I remember the awe of finally getting to see for real something I admired in reproductions.
I think it safe to say that Twombly's work can be compared to Yoko Ono's collection of "screaming" in the music world. Yoko was put on the stage & "made" an artist because of the sheer talented force of her husband John Lennnon. It is what it is. Ono is as much of a fraud as is Twombly. Crap is crap.
His work is truly laughable! Pure crap on a canvas! The art world is full of frauds and he was one of them. Artists who were his friends, clueless art critics, & certain elite say you're a genius & you become one. I have examined his work & tried to keep an open mind but it is what it is ... a collection of scribbling & nonsense promoted by idiots.
@c1magr8 Who do you think you are... much like music taste, taste in art is subjective. I don't care if you don't like it but calling people who do "idiots" is totally vacuous.
@corpsemunger (LOL) I KNOW who I am. It's called freedom of speech. This so-called-artist has made millions by putting out a lot of shit! He scribbles & is displayed with real artists like Van Gogh & Picasso. It is both a sham & IDIOTS like you support IDIOTS like him. Open your FUCKING eyes & look at what he is giving us ... pencil scribbles & a bunch of fucking scattered paint blobs ... he is a FUCKING FRAUD!!! The art world is FULL of frauds because of MORONS like you who support CRAP!
@c1magr8 Oh dear... so you think that art needs to have technical skill to be good? If you think this then it means you cannot truly appreciate artists like "Van Gogh & Picasso".
@corpsemunger LOL ... art is art. Some is good & some sucks! Twobly's work sucks! Thomas Kinkade sucks! There needs to be some measure on quality. A guy playing a tuba just making sounds could be considered making music ... but is it good? If everybody could do it well, then there would be no value in it. DeKooning is an abstract expressionist with real talent & a real soul. This Twobly shit, is scribbles & blobs of scattered paint! He made money on fools & laughed all the way to the bank!
@c1magr8 So you think there is a skill barrier? You obviously do not appreciate any art at all then. There is a lot more to art then skill.
I looked up DeKooning - and I like his work, but I feel about it in a very similar way as I feel from Twombly's. Some of DeKooning's work doesn't take a lot of skill, in fact I am sure many people could copy one of his paintings. But that is not the point. You're logic is flawed.
You cannot "value" art from what you have told me. Poor you
@corpsemunger (LMAO) If you don't know who De Kooning is you are a MORON who has no business making comments about art, Go get educated before you continue to make a fool out of yourself with IDIOTIC comments in a subject that you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about.Good god! What a MORON you are!!!
@TenStoryLoveSong I met him in person and is anything BUT boring! He's a very intelligent, profound, reflexive man. Try talking to him and you'll change your mind. btw: it's Storey, not Story ;)
I enjoyed watching and hearing Squire talk about Cy Twombly's work. It's endearing to know that Squire, also a great artist, admires Twombly; and, can actually talk about some of the complexities of Twombly's work, making clean observations without trying to interpret the artist's intent. I was turned on to Twombly via Squire.
John's guitar playing never struck me as pretentious (well, maybe some of those 8 minute solos, but only cuz the rhythm section needed to be heard more on Second Coming) and niether does his interest in art. The paintings are definitely about something, they're mot scribbles, but theres less information, and the meaning is encoded. Maybe thats too much work for some people these days ; )
You know, I was watching a telent show on TV recently and noticed the audience are like puppets. When the judges give them huge plaudits the crowd clap and cheer, and when they give the thumbs down, the audience boo and hiss. It's like the audience think they're giving their opinion but are really complete lemmings. It amuses me to just watch 'em jump.
Modern art is something you either hate or like no points in between but judging John because of it sounds harsh, even more when you judge him cos he takes his time to choose his words. That means he thinks what he says, unlike others who just talks and have no idea what they're saying.
i like john squire and wish he would make another second coming. but as for this modern art malarkey its just for people who cant paint properly. pretentious nonsense. theres people starving in the world and there paintings like that pish worth a fortune. the world is upside down i tell you
What about all the money going to sports and entertainment? Tiger Woods is worth how much because he can... uhm... play golf really well...!? the world is indeed upside down.
What's dissapointing is that Squire is not fabulosuly intelligent, he's noy very articulate and comes over as being not well informed about art either.
Yep, kind of reply typical of what one expects if you give an honest opinion other than one which praises people down to the ground. Predictable, boring. Go ahead, thumbs-down me all you like.
the guys a great guitar player but i think arts when you look at something and paint it really close to what it is, this just loooks like a fucking 2o'clock jakeball shat all over the picture and wrote a sentence explaining why.
There are so many layers to this man he never ends to fascinate me.
I started loving him as the Stone Roses guitarist, but there is more, much more to him.
I'm no art buff, by any means, but I'd love to take a tour of the Tate with someone like John telling me all about the paintings. He manages to convey the passion and love of art he has even to someone like me, who knows very little about it. Inspiring!
@cavernbirch sorry, not sure what you're saying... are you speaking in English? Anyway: that is what John sees in the painting. That's art: you don't have to KNOW, you have to FEEL.
Twombly is a hoax. Anyone who doesn't understand this likely is dancing in crop circles, channeling old movie actresses and sniffing vitamins from Whole Foods.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think he's just the demonstration that it's all about what they want to make you believe. I think his work is very poor but he's had always good connections. He's got money up his ass for that shit and this is so frustrating.
I respect the man as a guitar player and musician but i personally think he's using this art crap as escapism. He doesn't half waffle a load of crap aswell for that matter.
i like the way johns leaning is as much about the way the paint is applied and the textures you create as much as the subject of the picture. i like the choice of colours but i always think theres an element of the emperors new clothes about this sort of work. if it wasnt john squire appraising them i woudlnt think of much of them to be honest.
I am so ignorant when it comes to this kind of art that I wouldn't take it upon myself to judge without having heard from someone like John with a bit more understanding. He draws your attention to details that you might have dismissed initially, like the texture of the painting or the choice of colour, for example. Of the four painitngs I quite like the "Winter" one: I can see a forest in the picture, green branches emerging from the mist.
But that's my impression. I might be totally wrong!
In response to Twombly's art being compared to graffiti, I can see the relation but not to street graffiti but rather tokens of past writings weathered down. By putting his art in a gallery space wall this does not eliminate his paintings relationship to graffiti. Don't get me wrong though, I love the energy and uses of "negative white" space. Looks like it would be even more of a discovery to see them in person and see the layers for yourself.
i think they are beautiful, all four of them..the use of colors and the movement, the size of the canvas... everything. He's an amazing artist and he also has other styles, so he is very talented
haha i love squire but come on fruits ready for pickin in the grape harvest, war ships, its just a self indulgent man/child scribbling with a crayon and its awefull.
Ah guys, come on! I think it's brilliant to see John Squire clear and contemplative, saying it as he sees it in an unashamed way.Remember, the thoughts that come out of this man's mouth come from the same place that the I am the Resurrection solo came from.I'm happy to see the man enthusing about something and being intellectually engaged, and I could see where he was coming from.Nevertheless, birthistragic's comment made me laugh out loud, as they say.
Must be sad having an intelligent, articulate critique given by another analytical visual artist of notable calibre just drift over your head. If you don't know who Twombly is, or you feel you don't "get it"...may I suggest an education?...Ah but of course...if YOU don't understand it or it sounds like [looks like] gibberish then it must be that the presenter is the one on drugs. Yeah, that's it...YOUR just fine. Please, at the very least audit an art history class...it will enrich your life!
It doesn't have to be one's "thing" to gain an understanding. You don't even need to like it. My comments were in response to some of the bashing by someone who is up on their "horse" and lacks the knowledge due to a lack of education on the subject...no need to be so defensive. Oh, and by the way...my spelling is perfect. But does any of that really matter on a You-Tube posting? If it does, you failed to use capitals.
Fuck you art boy! So brave for leaving the canvass half empty..............oh the bravery brings a tear to my eye...how clever.Does that mean it would be braver still, not to paint on the canvass at all.....Yes next time leave completely blank. The year after that dont even hang the canvass on the walls.. year after leave the doors of the gallery locked and tell all the delusional middle class twats to go back to mummies for a pea salad! That would be so supurb, wouldnt it Tarquinn!
Are you refering to Tarquin the Proud or the Elder? Or the cartoonist? I'm not sure but it sounds like your trying to be clever. Do things you don't understand always make you so angry? As for the rest of your comment you might actually be on to something for an instalation piece. Of bravery, aren't you brave for saying FU art boy when you only need hide behind your CPU. It also illustrates how far below the middle class you must be. I'm sad for you now.
Maybe I am above the middle classes, they are usually very very predictable so they cant be superior. Its also a thing I am sitting behind my cpu In many ways,my friend. You really lower the tone when you hint about being hard in some way.Whilst you have been talking pedantic bollocks in art forums,I have been practising the noble 'art' since I was a wee nipper so you need not delude yourself on that score.Anger, abstract doesnt anger me,it amuses me in actual fact, especially when it sells.
Tarquinn is neither of your little romans,it is actually a comedic device used to evoke an image of a silly little person who spends his life looking at, and talking, absolute shite!!!Ring any bells,.......Tarquinn!!
Yes it does ring bells...everything you have said my friend! I too am an artist and musician, for a few decades now. So I walk as well as talk! I think you must know that predictability is human nature, not a class trait. On your final point about anger and the abstract....I think we just found our common ground to get past this pointless jesting....I never actually said I liked Twombly...though I do like some abstract and expressionism I find myself amused or shaking my head when it sells....
.....also I would like to take this opportunity to say...man, I think we'd actually get along, you must have been a 'Roses fan and that makes you alright in my books. So that brings an end to any more abraisive comments from me. I think you might enjoy this documentary I saw a few months back called "My Child Could Paint That" by director Amir Bar-Lev. (2007)It's dry at times but drives the point home. With that, I'll reply to any friendly retorts but lets not reduce ourselves any further..later!
i think the best place to squabble about art and then call everyone who doesnt agree with me names has to be in the comment section for a video on youtube. hands down.
aside from that, i think its pretty neat this guy got to talk about what he thinks of this art work and then gets to share it with a bunch of interested people.

just because painting isn't one's thing doesn't make them uneducated. maybe you should get down from that horse and learn how to spell for a start.

'YOUR'. you meant YOU'RE'?

I'm sad for you now.
theoriginaldmc 3 years ago
Maybe I am above the middle classes, they are usually very very predictable so they cant be superior. Its also a thing I am sitting behind my cpu In many ways,my friend. You really lower the tone when you hint about being hard in some way.Whilst you have been talking pedantic bollocks in art forums,I have been practising the noble 'art' since I was a wee nipper so you need not delude yourself on that score.Anger, abstract doesnt anger me,it amuses me in actual fact, especially when it sells.

Tarquinn is neither of your little romans,it is actually a comedic device used to evoke an image of a silly little person who spends his life looking at, and talking, absolute shite!!!Ring any bells,.......Tarquinn!!
sugarraygras 3 years ago

I thought I'd left the kitchen in mess, but now realise it's an experiment and forms part of my work. What a relief!
