His work is a collection of scibbling & massive blobs of dripping paint ... many time he uses these in a formulated way ... on diagonals or done in the same depressing hues. He has a FORMULA to make MONEY on idiots!!! The art world took a no talented hack & made him into something he isn't ... an artist. @laurawire Knowledge can be aquired by reading books on a subject and people don't always get the chance to see the art they study, as paintings are in different countries or even private collections. I have studied art history and I remember the awe of finally getting to see for real something I admired in reproductions.

I think it safe to say that Twombly's work can be compared to Yoko Ono's collection of "screaming" in the music world. Yoko was put on the stage & "made" an artist because of the sheer talented force of her husband John Lennnon. It is what it is. Ono is as much of a fraud as is Twombly. Crap is crap.

I looked up DeKooning - and I like his work, but I feel about it in a very similar way as I feel from Twombly's. Some of DeKooning's work doesn't take a lot of skill, in fact I am sure many people could copy one of his paintings. But that is not the point. You're logic is flawed.

I enjoyed watching and hearing Squire talk about Cy Twombly's work. It's endearing to know that Squire, also a great artist, admires Twombly; and, can actually talk about some of the complexities of Twombly's work, making clean observations without trying to interpret the artist's intent. I was turned on to Twombly via Squire.

John's guitar playing never struck me as pretentious (well, maybe some of those 8 minute solos, but only cuz the rhythm section needed to be heard more on Second Coming) and niether does his interest in art. The paintings are definitely about something, they're mot scribbles, but theres less information, and the meaning is encoded. Maybe thats too much work for some people these days ; )

When the judges give them huge plaudits the crowd clap and cheer, and when they give the thumbs down, the audience boo and hiss. I started loving him as the Stone Roses guitarist, but there is more, much more to him.

I'm no art buff, by any means, but I'd love to take a tour of the Tate with someone like John telling me all about the paintings. He manages to convey the passion and love of art he has even to someone like me, who knows very little about it. Inspiring!

i like the way johns leaning is as much about the way the paint is applied and the textures you create as much as the subject of the picture. i like the choice of colours but i always think theres an element of the emperors new clothes about this sort of work. if it wasnt john squire appraising them i woudlnt think of much of them to be honest.

I am so ignorant when it comes to this kind of art that I wouldn't take it upon myself to judge without having heard from someone like John with a bit more understanding. He draws your attention to details that you might have dismissed initially, like the texture of the painting or the choice of colour, for example. Of the four painitngs I quite like the "Winter" one: I can see a forest in the picture, green branches emerging from the mist.

But that's my impression. I might be totally wrong!

In response to Twombly's art being compared to graffiti, I can see the relation but not to street graffiti but rather tokens of past writings weathered down. By putting his art in a gallery space wall this does not eliminate his paintings relationship to graffiti. Don't get me wrong though, I love the energy and uses of "negative white" space. Looks like it would be even more of a discovery to see them in person and see the layers for yourself.
