Jeremy Brett struggled for many years with a mental illness. I believe it was manic/depressive.Goes to show that people with mental illness can still function and meet success..
Although I prefer Brett's portrayal of Holmes, I don't think RDJ's was all that bad. The 2009 movie was supposed to be an action movie, so of course we get a younger attractive guy to play the part . But what makes Holmes "Holmes" is deductions, clever humor, and a bit of awkwardness to level it out. RDJ had all that, though not as good as Brett, but at least it was present. There are quite a few Holmes who don't even seem like the famous detective ...
@RekaTheAlchemist> What I don't understand the critics acuse BBc Sherlock of being racist sexist and uncanon all the while they preactically crawl up RDJ's ass with all the praise they lavish on hin. (yes Tv Tropes I|m looking at ýou)
@digikate813 well the first sherlock holmes story Moriarty was in was "the final problem" but years later Conan Doyle wrote " Sherlock holmes and The Valley of fear" (which takes place before the final problem) and moriarty is only mentiond so yah
More proof that Jeremy Brett's Holmes is better than Robert Downey Jr's. -- he's a better action hero! That first scene trumps the entire Sherlock Holmes movie!
Watson's quite brave to agree to close the curtains after being told there's someone aiming at thier windows with an air gun! I would've ducked under the table!
@KingofStarfox They were trying to kill at Holmes, not him. They probably didn't even know who Watson was and probably didn't want to leave a trail of bodies.
What a terrible name for an episode :( I once told my friend that I hope these adventures of mister Jeremy Holmes will never and he suggested that I don't watch one episode until I lie on my dying bed. May this be the one.
Dear Mr.Holmes, not only do I agree with the revolver suggestion below but I also suggest that when someone starts knocking on a window that you get Watson to use a better weapon
rapuijada I don't think he really dies. In the book there is no body, and in fiction when there is no body it is a sure sign the person is probably still alive. Maybe there injured but alive none the less.
Actually when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote "The Final Problem" he was tired of Sherlock Holmes and intended Holmes to be dead at the end. That was supposed to be the last story, but after his fans pleaded with him, he brought Holmes back to life.
That's right. The character of Sherlock had become "real" as so often with popular characters in the public imaginations. I also read that a publisher offered Doyle a lot of money which he needed, but so be it. I think this episode was the season/series finale and also many viewers probably hadn't read the story like the children so perhaps they really wanted to make the non-Doyle fans stunned at Holmes "death" at the end. It certainly keeps the spirit of Doyle's intention that Sherlock is dead.
Well I'm sure the demand from his readers caused him to lose time on other projects. Its nice to have fans admire your work no doubt, but it can be very controlling of one's life. But Doyle has achieved literary immortality through Holmes, so at least his work is still read, even if not the work he truly desired.
well let's face it great writers are known for one or two fictional works they've done. I'm glad doyle did finish writing his holmes stories before he died.
must be a alternate universe sherlock holmes where instead of thinking and deductions mixed in with action. It's action mixed in with some deductions and thinking. I'll go see it.
Well I always saw Holmes as a superhero, just of the cerebral type. This take seems to make him a James Bond/Indiana Jones hybrid or something.
Another problem is Guy Ritchie is directing and his films don't quite gell with me, from what I've seen of his work anyway, I'm just not crazy about his films. I certainly don't think this will "taint" the character anymore than say "Young Sherlock Holmes", I just wasn't thrilled by it and inside buzz isn't postive. Well I hope the film works for you.
Yes the hair is a bit much and I hadn't thought of his costume that way, ha! Sherlock Emo, oh dear! Talk about pandering to the kids, oh well. A couple of films I liked which played a bit with the character: "The Seven Percent Solution" and "Murder by Decree" both from the 70's. You've probably heard of them, they both embrace the traditonal character but find new shades: in the first a psychoanaltic take and the second is a bit more of a compassionate person, more heroic in the standard sense.
Wow knife boy looks like your Empire(of nothingness)struck back.......though unfortunetely all it hit was air.You know I wonder about butt kissers like you ,what is your daily routine (other than beating off in the shower that is lol)?Do you wake up,take a dose of s.tupid pills and think to yourself "Gee how am I going act re.tarded enough to draw attention to my lame self today?"
Btw I fugred that like all white vagina's that like to run thier mouth through a computer screen you would resort to trying to last word me with you blabbering nonsense and then try to block me from replying with further ownage of your waste of skin existence
Dear Mr Holmes, Sir, I fully approve Mr Wright's suggestion below that you acquire a Webley revolver; but I too have some advice for you. It is, Sir, that you visit my shop - "Wilkins Gentlemen's Outfitters and purchase one of our Life Preservers. We have one model - the N° 1 sword-stick, which releases the blade at the press of a button and which is ideal for a man such as you who faces constant danger. We look forward to your visiting us soon, Sir.
Mr. Holmes, may I make a recommendation, sir? If you would start carrying a Webley Bulldog revolver in your pocket, you would have had a much easier morning!
A&E used to precede this with closeups of the inside of a ticking watch, ending on the face. I felt it was analgonous - Everyone can see the gears turn, but only Sherlock knows what time it is.

I've heard Holmes being refered to as "the first super hero." I suppose that makes Moriarty the first arch enemy.

Lol, try half of London. After the Final Problem people wore black armbands in protest.
Also, i find it interesting that the opening music is more morose or ominous than the usual opening score.

That's true, its usually a few works that stick out, even among vast bodies of work.
You can't control what hits a nerve with readers and what doesn't. But yes its nice Doyle did a full blown series, with a kind of finish to it.

the one thing I have with the way they're depicting holmes is he's got untamed hair and wearing a 19th century equivalent of a emo suit. fishy.
