Although I prefer Brett's portrayal of Holmes, I don't think RDJ's was all that bad. The 2009 movie was supposed to be an action movie, so of course we get a younger attractive guy to play the part . But what makes Holmes "Holmes" is deductions, clever humor, and a bit of awkwardness to level it out. RDJ had all that, though not as good as Brett, but at least it was present. There are quite a few Holmes who don't even seem like the famous detective ...

Anywho, that's my opinion.

@digikate813 well the first sherlock holmes story Moriarty was in was "the final problem" but years later Conan Doyle wrote " Sherlock holmes and The Valley of fear" (which takes place before the final problem) and moriarty is only mentiond so yah

rapuijada I don't think he really dies. In the book there is no body, and in fiction when there is no body it is a sure sign the person is probably still alive. Maybe there injured but alive none the less.

Actually when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote "The Final Problem" he was tired of Sherlock Holmes and intended Holmes to be dead at the end. That was supposed to be the last story, but after his fans pleaded with him, he brought Holmes back to life.

Also, i find it interesting that the opening music is more morose or ominous than the usual opening score.

That's right. The character of Sherlock had become "real" as so often with popular characters in the public imaginations. I also read that a publisher offered Doyle a lot of money which he needed, but so be it. I think this episode was the season/series finale and also many viewers probably hadn't read the story like the children so perhaps they really wanted to make the non-Doyle fans stunned at Holmes "death" at the end. It certainly keeps the spirit of Doyle's intention that Sherlock is dead.

Well I'm sure the demand from his readers caused him to lose time on other projects. Its nice to have fans admire your work no doubt, but it can be very controlling of one's life. But Doyle has achieved literary immortality through Holmes, so at least his work is still read, even if not the work he truly desired.

well let's face it great writers are known for one or two fictional works they've done. I'm glad doyle did finish writing his holmes stories before he died.

That's true, its usually a few works that stick out, even among vast bodies of work.

You can't control what hits a nerve with readers and what doesn't. But yes its nice Doyle did a full blown series, with a kind of finish to it.

Well I always saw Holmes as a superhero, just of the cerebral type. This take seems to make him a James Bond/Indiana Jones hybrid or something.

Another problem is Guy Ritchie is directing and his films don't quite gell with me, from what I've seen of his work anyway, I'm just not crazy about his films. I certainly don't think this will "taint" the character anymore than say "Young Sherlock Holmes", I just wasn't thrilled by it and inside buzz isn't postive. Well I hope the film works for you.

the one thing I have with the way they're depicting holmes is he's got untamed hair and wearing a 19th century equivalent of a emo suit. fishy.

Yes the hair is a bit much and I hadn't thought of his costume that way, ha! Sherlock Emo, oh dear! Talk about pandering to the kids, oh well. A couple of films I liked which played a bit with the character: "The Seven Percent Solution" and "Murder by Decree" both from the 70's. You've probably heard of them, they both embrace the traditonal character but find new shades: in the first a psychoanaltic take and the second is a bit more of a compassionate person, more heroic in the standard sense.

This episode is one of the very best from the entire series. Holmes is literally fighting for his life here. This episode is a real hair-raiser!

A&E used to precede this with closeups of the inside of a ticking watch, ending on the face. I felt it was analgonous - Everyone can see the gears turn, but only Sherlock knows what time it is.
