Yehudi is from another age and just did not understand what Glenn was saying.
Time has moved on and Glenn knew it, he was able to perdict the future or should I say he had a good idea where it was heading, I take it that this was recorded in the late 60s ?
The "digital age" they are referring to does not invalidate or replace the concert hall, Gould's unconditioned observations of it do. I don't know why he cant say it in less words. He would have invalided public performance with or without the recording studio. And stop thinking about what he would be doing if still alive. Someone is out there doing it, look for them.
Wonderful stuff. I had previously thought Gould was a bit of a weirdo but clearly he was a genius and ahead of his time. One wonders what he would make of today's piano technology

When Menuhin tells Gould that he could deliver as good a performance in a concert setting than in recording must of been flattering. You can tell by Glen Gould posture and facial expression that he's relishing every moment of it.
Gould had a brilliant way of describing his own playing. Describing his performance of the English Suite as an: 'X-ray'. That really captures how he perceived the interpretation.
"PolyPhony", thanks so much for posting. I wanted to post this bit from journalist Peter Gutmann on the Schoenberg/Menuhin/Gould video, but it's not allowed. If you don't know it, I thought you'd be interested:
"[In their] 1966 one-hour TV show...the performances are sharp and committed, but the story behind it is even more revealing. Apparently, Gould deeply admired Menuhin both as a musician and as a humanitarian, but couldn't resist trying to one-up him a bit by including the Schoenberg...
...work which Menuhin didn't know and surely regarded as stylistically alien to his own mainstream musical taste. Yet, as Gould later recalled (as quoted in Michael Stegemann's liner notes): 'it was one of the great experiences of my life. In some miraculous way, Yehudi had absorbed that extraordinarily difficult piece literally overnight and played it with absolute reckless virtuosity. What was more important, though, ...was that he played it as though, for that moment at least, he loved it.'"
Glenn the prophet. Almost all his views on technology and concert-going have come to pass. Eventually even Menuhin will only remembered by Youtube clips like this one. And the Met is broadcasting live into movie theaters. GG's death at the brink of the digital age is a tragedy comparable to Schubert dying before his Ninth Symphony was performed.
Thank you Glenn for giving people so much joy. The prospect of you meeting old Johann Sebastian is only time I have wanted to believe in an afterlife.
Marvelous! Two great artists who had the utmost respect for each other's art yet had vastly different approaches to it. I have the accompanying book to this series and desperately wanted to see some of it. This is a real treasure. Wonderful post.
somecallmeRudy - Glad you enjoyed it! The dialog between Menuhin and Gould is indeed marvelous. Are there any specific parts other of the series that you would like to see? If so I could probably post some of them.
You're very welcome! I just think about how happy I am when I see similar postings, and this motivates me to post these and bring such happiness to others.

Studio recordings are something but classical concerts today are much prestigious and furthermore when completed with success !

Two Gods...... yes, how awesome to hear this kind of intelligence amongst all the low class depravity world wide.....

Awesome to see stuff like this, you just dont get to see something classy like this anymore.
Relaxed, steady camera, no sudden movements (mtv camera), sophisticated conversation.
I mean, this would be great even if they would be talking about different variations of apple trees, not music.
Please do post everything you can find, Polyphony.
