It would be fantastic if more people would accept the fact that Marcelo and Ben were not competing in any way, but were rolling for the sake of getting themselves into and out of bad positions. That's how you get better....multiple times, Ben willingly put himself into positions that he wouldn't go into if this were a competition, so stop treating it as such.
The Western wrestling paradigm seems to be about controling the hips and pinning the opponent to the mat. The Eastern one about ultimately "winning" and choking out your opponent.
The Eastern one seem more interesting to me and more combat (as opposed to sport) orientated.
That said, the advantage (position) gained from Western wrestling gives one perhaps a better platform (top position) to launch striking techniques. Just a thought.....

The price of his seminars vary but if you get the chance to go you should defiantly go! For the 2 day seminar I think I paid $129 and for the 1 day seminar I paid $99! But all schools are different and might have different prices but whatever the price is just pay it and go! I've learned alot from his classes!

@rainriders I am the biggest Marcelo fan and train his moves, well try to at least, but his place is in bjj not in mma. He's too nice and happy go lucky to be breaking people's skulls. You have to have the fire and hate to want to truly hurt another person and pro mma fighters have it.

well it is a different sport, and the with all of the rules in wrestling, not many wrestlers are able to develop a 'smart' grappling plan. There are others: catch wrestling, sambo ,judo,roman greco, freestyle ad infinitum. And a mount in bjj does not equal a "pin". You think Marcelo could succesfully wrestle at the collegiate level or olympic level?Not without more training. Is he one of the greatest Bjj practioners of all time? Yes. In a street fight I would rather have great wrestling than great bjj.

I wrestled for 3 years and have been training in BJJ for 15 years, 10 years under Roger Machado. Sure there is plenty of other grappling styles that are effective but I would say overwhelmingly BJJ comes out on top. Watch the Machado brothers winning sambo tournaments with BJJ only. Or Rickson Gracie doing the exact same thing.

He couldn't strike his way out of a wet paper bag yet submitted everyone, including Dan Severin who weighed 70lbs more than Royce. Good luck fighting from your back in a street fight using wrestling. You will need luck on your side. Lots of it.
@roddy8273 Saw them. it was a great introduction of BJJ. It was very very effective then when most of the competition was not familiar wit the finishing holds. Not the same anymore. The point on the street is not to be on your back and get up quickly. If you happen to be one of the Machado brothers then you can do what you want. Thank you for your resume. I would say a mixture of Judo, BJJ, Greco and Catch Wrestling would be the most effective in the clinch, takedown and ground department.

Even if they stood standing, Marcelo would have still owned. Askren would have gotten the take-down, but ultimately get submitted. The only reason Marcelo would want to keep start standing is if he wanted to work on his take-downs.
@cquenault I might have to disagree. I've personally seen marcelo take down Division 1 wrestlers down at ease. When he went against Jake Shields at the sub-X it was unbelievably easy for him to just grab a single and lay the pipe. I was in awe. Ben Askren is an incredible wrestler though and could pull it off, but would get gullotined in the process lol.

There are others: catch wrestling, sambo ,judo,roman greco, freestyle ad infinitum. And a mount in bjj does not equal a "pin". You think Marcelo could succesfully wrestle at the collegiate level or olympic level?Not without more training. Is he one of the greatest Bjj practioners of all time? Yes. In a street fight I would rather have great wrestling than great bjj.

@leoosiku So when Marcelo mounts Ben and both of his should blades touch the mat that wouldn't be considered a pin in wrestling?  I think so. I wrestled for 3 years and have been training in BJJ for 15 years, 10 years under Roger Machado. Sure there is plenty of other grappling styles that are effective but I would say overwhelmingly BJJ comes out on top. Watch the Machado brothers winning sambo tournaments with BJJ only. Or Rickson Gracie doing the exact same thing.

@leoosiku Or maybe perhaps you missed the early UFC matches when Royce used nothing but BJJ to defeat EVERYONE! He couldn't strike his way out of a wet paper bag yet submitted everyone, including Dan Severin who weighed 70lbs more than Royce. Good luck fighting from your back in a street fight using wrestling. You will need luck on your side. Lots of it.

@roddy8273 Saw them. it was a great introduction of BJJ. It was very very effective then when most of the competition was not familiar wit the finishing holds. Not the same anymore. The point on the street is not to be on your back and get up quickly. If you happen to be one of the Machado brothers then you can do what you want. Thank you for your resume. I would say a mixture of Judo, BJJ, Greco and Catch Wrestling would be the most effective in the clinch, takedown and ground department.

@leoosiku You are living in a fantasy world. It isn't that easy to just "get up quickly" in a street fight. Especially wrestlers who are defeated if they are on their back. Other than bridging what can they do? And I thought we were discussing BJJ vs. wrestling. Suddenly you're saying a "mixture" of styles is best. Really? Ya think?

Even if they stood standing, Marcelo would have still owned. Askren would have gotten the take-down, but ultimately get submitted. The only reason Marcelo would want to keep start standing is if he wanted to work on his take-downs.

@cquenault I might have to disagree. I've personally seen marcelo take down Division 1 wrestlers down at ease. When he went against Jake Shields at the sub-X it was unbelievably easy for him to just grab a single and lay the pipe. I was in awe. Ben Askren is an incredible wrestler though and could pull it off, but would get gullotined in the process lol.
