What a wonderful cameo role for the gifted late great black character actor Rex Ingram! THANKS for uploading this powerful clip from an excellent film!
This beautiful movie was once available in full on YouTube but has been removed for copyrite reasons, as if Burt Lancaster, Jean Simmons, Arthur Kennedy, Shirley Jones or Sinclair Lewis would realize anything from this "protection". In an age of CGI Elmer Gantry will never be re-released but the net is one place where young people can find powerful perfromances based on one of America's greatest authors. Imagine what it costs studios just to monitior and enforce this censorship. Madness!
yet i would suggest another ending: that he gets enough of sister Falconer as she has become an usual woman, and then he leaves, just so with one suit case, while she is standing and looking at him leaving; it should be rather a satire, not a melodrama
I think that's based on actual events. It wasn't uncommon for white evangelists to go into black churches during the Third Great Awakening. The first calls for racial integration in rural America usually came from open revival meetings. Also, it was usually acceptable for a white man to go into a black church but not the other way around. It also depended on where you lived.
Even the bigoted Westboro Baptist Church founder was a Civil Rights attorney.
Great scene, from a beyond brilliant movie. Burts character based on the immortal Bill Sunday, Slide Into Heaven for God and Aimee Semple Mcpherson. Just great
@neweast1 Daniel Day Lewis, Alfred Molina, Josh Brolin, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Carey Mulligan, Katie Jarvis, John Simm, Marion Cotillard, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Casey Affleck, Gael Garcia Bernal, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Hall, Sam Rockwell and a whole host of others would like to strongly disagree with you there, Mr Sweeping Statement Man.
Besides, it's not as if Raquel Welch or Anita Ekberg didn't prioritise their image over their acting either...
@TheThing88 I have to agree with you. I'm old and love old actors back to Ronald Coleman, Errol Flynn and Vivien Leigh but I watch modern movies and am usually really impressed. Johnny Depp is terrific and Kate Beckinsale and Keira Knightly break my old heart as much as any silver screen goddess of yesteryear. (Glad you included Maggie Gyllenhaal, she's super.) Looking only to the past for talent brings us back to Sunset Boulevard although I bet Gloria Swanson would agree, somewhat, with you.
Right on! This is an outstanding, brilliant, Best Actor Oscar performance. The Academy sometimes misses the mark if there's anything controversial about a movie or a performance.

Netflix is really good for finding old classic movies and obscure indie films and documentaries.

the best of the film is when Lancaster sings!
