mguthrie25, I was at the event (I sat in front of the guy who stood and yelled the ever so prolific statement, "FUCK BUSH!" while small children sat around him). Why did I go even though I'm no fan? BECAUSE IT'S AN INDUCTION CEREMONY AND NOT THE "BUSH SHOW". I didn't go "for Bush". I went, as I always do, to see and welcome our new citizens. Now, the year Carl Sagan was guest speaker...THAT one I was excited about. Besides, my dad works there and got us tickets :P

Unfortunately, there is no other setting to go after him. Crowds at official events are usually screened for protesters. This one slipped through the cracks. As he was saying "we have freedom of speech", the protesters were being dragged from the crowd by security.
Banners and protesters can't get caught by metal detectors. Banners were prohibited, but if someone put one under their clothing, it wouldn't get caught. They couldn't turn someone away just for wearing a shirt that protested. It's unfortunate that they disrupted the ceremony, and it's true, we have freedom of speech, but since Monticello is private property, they have the authority to ask them to leave and remove them from the grounds if they don't go peacefully.
What would your solution have been? Allow the 5 or 6 people who were dragged off to continue to scream and yell nonsense? And what sort of conclusion would you have hoped everyone had received from the man screaming, "FUCK BUSH!". What sort of enlightenment would you hope the people to obtain from that? I mean, damn, be creative at least. Scream "STOP THE WAR!" or something. The only message I came away with from that guy was that he was a dumbass.

Banners and protesters can't get caught by metal detectors. Banners were prohibited, but if someone put one under their clothing, it wouldn't get caught. They couldn't turn someone away just for wearing a shirt that protested. It's unfortunate that they disrupted the ceremony, and it's true, we have freedom of speech, but since Monticello is private property, they have the authority to ask them to leave and remove them from the grounds if they don't go peacefully.
