I have a ton of old hard drives, but every one of them has 4 wires (gnd a b c). I tested a motor and it has three coils. The problem is that in this configuration the signal would not be L-R-L-R or R-l-R-l (depending on the direction of the platter rotation) but L-R-gap-L-R-gap or R-L-gap (or any other combination of left-right and a gap at the beggining, middle, or end). Although it woul work the "scratching" would be rather choppy (due to the lack of signal from one of the three coils)
@napentjezusa I did get something even with very slow rotation. But the level is beating and it's difficult to determine the direction. But signal/noise ratio is very good until is (almost) stops
Sorry to ask such a basic question. I have got all the hardware functioning but not the software side. I am using the free synth maker software and its not picking up my hardrive signal even though my computer picks it up through the input. I would really appreciate it if you could help me with the software. Thanks so much
@eni1gmatik I used a stereo RCA connector, but any stereo audio connection will do. I think on cheaper sound cards you can't really process the line-in signal. It's just routed through to the output. And mic ports are usually mono. So you will need a "better" sound card for this to work.
It can work as a MIDI controller by converting the parameters to MIDI signals and sending them out in SynthMaker. I never did this actually, because I used internal controllers in FL Studio.
@alphanimal Can you please try making that a MIDI controller? I've seen some other schemes (HDDJ on instructables) but they look pretty complex compared to this.
Hi, been trying to set this up for a few days now. I get as far as to have the HDD make noise out the master output through your OSM, but regardless of any audio clip i set in SM it only keeps looping a drumbeat. Connecting the HDD and setting up your OSM in SM is no trouble, but configuring SM is all a blur. Please help? :(
this is AWESOME. I could play with this setup all day and remix songs and other audio. I could almost build this. is this free like the software? can you say take an mp3 and scratch to it.
down of the cd is mouse

Can be used with Virtual DJ ???
wilobmw1 10 months ago
@wilobmw1 You'd have to implement some kind of MIDI converter and route it to a MIDI-In device. I have to tried to do that yet.
alphanimal 10 months ago
@wilobmw1 hmmn, you cant. i think. proven the fact that it can only be played on fl studio via synthmaker.

Is this connected trough 3.5mm jack into laptop? Line-in, mic, or how? Also, how can you turn that to MIDI controller?
