One of the (many) great things about Homer and Jethro is that while the lyrics were funny, they didn't skimp on the music. They used first-rate musicians (Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph, etc.) and their stuff was superbly arranged and well produced. Often times, their parodies sound just as good as the original songs being parodied.
@gguitarlizard to be more accurate, guitar lizard, the first guitar solo is definitely played by none other than guitar great george barnes, chet's idol -- and my father :) the second guitar could be chet -- but is more likely jethro.
I do not know who plays the first guitar solo...maybe Hank Garland. Jethro plays the second solo on the electric mandolin and Chet Atkins plays the third solo. Great stuff. Excellent quality recording.
@bdzmusicprod as i told guitar lizard, the first guitar solo is definitely played by none other than guitar great george barnes, chet's idol -- and my father :)
@zan17 Thanks for the information! I corresponded with Jethro in the late 70's early 80's and he said in one of his letters that George Barnes, Hank Garland, Chet Atkins and others played lead guitar on their albums. I have always been puzzled as to why Homer never played any lead. He did use an electric guitar on occasion but never recorded any solos. Jethro said that he played similar style of Freddie Green who also never recorded a solo but played rhythm his entire career.
frow...I wouldn't say that Big Mamas original from '53 is better than Elvis version. For me both are really good but differ as salt and sugar. You need 'em both. My 5 cents....
Hound Dog was actually covered by many country & western recording artists in the early 50´s, but it was Freddy Bell & His Bell Boys that changed the song from rhythm´n blues to rock´n roll. The song was recorded for Bernie Love¨s Teen label in mid-55. In 1956 Presley heard Freddy Bell & His Bell Boys sing the song in Las Vegas. Bell and Presley became friends and the rest is history. Bell re-recorded Hound Dog for Mercury Records but strange as it is they didn´t release it as a 45.

Actually, it's not 'Elvis' Hound Dog'...the song was originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton (better version).
frow9405 3 years ago
This is a parody of Elvis' version of the song, not Big Mama Thornton's. (Wish I had one of those in my collection!!)
