I cut my teeth landing at AVX, back then fees were $5.00, now they're as high as Elvis, and the runway is still the same. I love landing here! I am a local, but have business overtown, and hate the JET CAT. I fly out of Palomar (CRQ) . Weight and balance? A must on take off if you're heavy and it's hot, that strip gets a lot shorter, and that hump a lot higher. Nothing is worse than trying to rotate, and hearing the stall horn start to chirp. The Buffalo hate it..
@cinebill I'm guessing you were a private pilot back then? It's amazing how much we all sucked as private pilots, myself included :) What scares me is the people who think that level of skill is sufficient...
@DerekABC catalinas runway is is horrible condition. pot holes everywhere, dips randomly along the runway. bad placement of turn offs. Love landing there for the challenge but they really need to fix up the runway. the airport is already a skilled landing to begin with and to have the pot holes making your plane jump around just adds to pilots concern while flying there.
Used to take a Cherk 140 out there in the early '70s'. Lots of changes since then. At that time, had a paved runway with gravel taxiways. The resteruant was a trailer with a white wooden deck in front. Order your buffalo burgers and drink and watch the 1st timers land. Could tell them by the way they burned the brakes up, then topped the hill and saw the rest of the runway. kinda funny.
Hey mate, another very enjoyable video =) Can't remember the last update I gave ya but I'm PPL now, aero's rating, Night rating test is on Friday and got my second tailwheel endo lesson in about an hour =D
Oh yeah eventually, after I get my instructor rating i'll earn a 'little' bit of cash and soon after start training for that =) It's all about money I guess haha, flying is not cheap
@ellzyss No its not lol, I just started on my PPL (3.3 hours already yay, the .3 is because on my second lesson our engine started sputtering at 1200 feet (about 700 feet AGL here) and I plan on getting my commercial in a few years after I build up my credit (Going to ATP in Indianapolis or Chicago) Good luck with your IFR and Instructor ratings!
@cinebill howdy, just throw you an update, got my NVFR rating, tailwheel endo and now also have csu and retract endo =) did aerodynamics as my first cpl exam this week and got 85.. 95 or even 100 woulda been nice! ahah, guess i'll just have to study harder
@ellzyss That is great. I have made a couple of trips to Mexico, the farthest has been Burbank to Cabo San Lucas. Instrument conditions on both ends and a 5 hours of absolutely nothing in between. We would fly for hours and not see a road, not even a dirt road. Fun stuff. Keep me posted on what you do next.
Yes, many times. I used to instruct out of CRQ in the early 90"s and loved to make that trip. I remember the first time I flew in there. I was pressing on the brakes on short final. Don't mean to bust your chops on the landing but it was quite long for a Bonanza. Happy Flying...
I have landed there many times. The first trip there was made with my instructor, just after getting my Private, 19 years ago. His advice, due to the potential to strong downdrafts on the approach end, aim for about 1/4 of the way down the runway, in case you get a strong down-gust on short final. I used 1500 ft for the landing. You too need to post some videos of your landings at tricky airports for others to enjoy.

Bad job managing that approach. That A36 doctorkiller was actually below the runway on final! Do they hand out certs like skittles now?

Runway appears to be in pretty poor condition! Sounds like you or your 'co-pilot' were surpised by it too.

Nice video, and nice plane. I hope to get that field in my logbook someday, as I've read about it many times. Thanks!

Terrible approach on final way too low about half mile out then floated halfway down the runway.

Way to go! Have fun. Bring along some pillows or cushions to sit on to make yourself taller, so you can see over the tall instrument panel.

Is the landing fee now 25 bucks? To land or eat thy buffalo burger..That is the question!
dpgtime 2 years ago
Yep, it's a private airport. You land, pay $25, then pay for the buffalo burger and eat it.

Awesome location for an airstrip; must be a great field to approach :)
