  • Superb.TY for this awesome posting.

  • Glorious! What a gifted artist he was.

  • Beautiful rendition!

  • Anyone know where I can find the lyrics for this rendition? It is not the normal rendition, but I like it a lot.

  • aramaic, it is!

  • yes, aramaic. absolutely.

  • I missed Kol Nidrei in Mexico City because of the traffic, for the first time in my life. Now with Johnny Mathis I recovered. Miriam

  • You don't have to be Jewish to do a great Kol Nidre, but you do have to have the talent and Johnny Mathis has been blessed with the talent.

  • Marvelous, warm and glorious vocal on ' Kol Nidrei ' - also Perry C. and the powerful Gmar Hatina Tova. ... Blessed to be learning the prayer for my Congregation .

  • Such a haunting and soul-strring prayer. Really sets the mood for Yom Kippur

  • My father instilled a love of Johnny Mathis in me. I never knew he recorded a song like this. He is so gifted. Thank you and shanem dank

  • Well, he mangles the Aramaic, but he really captures the emotion of cantorial music.

  • @wrlord2001 "Mangles Aramaic." Kidding? Nobody knows how Aramaic of ancient times was pronounced. AND Aramaic: one of those interim vernaculars that had faded away by the time Kol Nidre appeared AFTER the destruction of the Second Temple. Kol Nidre is in Hebrew. Poor ethics to spread misinformation just to comment. AND American rabbis and cantors slaughter prayer- book Hebrew—assuming modern Hebrew as spoken by native Israelis is more authentic than what is taught in Jewish-American seminaries.

  • @StJouish --kol nidre is aramaic. not hebrew.

  • @ranchump Correct.

  • @ranchump are you sure?

  • @wrlord2001 Okay, maybe it is Aramaic. But you're not really an expert on Aramaic, r u?

  • Soaring to the heights with this song - what a depth of soul in his worshipful voice!

  • Always Perfection!

  • Good, really good, considering that he's not a chazan! 56Yeya

  • Wonderful

  • I remember listening to this as a teanager and loved it then. Was always a fan of Jonny Mathis. Pity youngsters today do not appreciate such songs and his voice.

I have a lump in my throat.

  • @regrobig we don't?

  • WOW!!!! SHANA TOVA

  • beautiful... always loved Johnny's voice, but this far exceeds anything I'd have imagined. It's almost operatic at the end. Wow!

  • it was really good

  • Untouchable--unbelievable.

  • At this time of the year with Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur coming up, it is inspiring to hear this rendition of Kol Nidre. It was a different world when this was recorded and I want to thank him for what he did then and would love to hear it sung now

  • what a voice! he gives a better rendition than 99% of the jewish cantors

  • Good Night, Dear Lord is by far my favorite JM album. It is really a masterpiece, There are a lot of singing teachers and voice coaches around the world that keep that album as a reference for their students. That´s the degree the artistry of our idol reached. In a nutshell, the album is the best from the best. I keep a few copies in vinyl and CD.

  • @ipstock This is so beautiful. I'm once again listening to it today on my stereo. It fills my house with such peace and timeless music-artistry. All of the songs on this cd does. I agree with you, this is his masterpiece.

    Berit.

  • Just for everybody´s enlightenment, Kol Nidre and Eli Eli are Jewish classic religious songs, the words, though are in Yiddish, nor Hebrew. Johnny does them perfectly (as usual).

  • ipstock, thanks for the clarification about the language the song is being sung in. I have uploaded "I Hear A Forest Praying" and "Eli Eli" sung by Johnny which is on this great album "Good Night, Dear Lord" if anyone wants to listen to them.

  • Hi everyone, this isn't hebrew or yiddish. it is an ancient language called "Aramaic", not spoken anymore. Much of his pronunciation is good and of course his singing is out of this world gorgeous.

  • This is a great song, I uploaded it too. It's on Johnny's wonderful 1958 album "Good Night, Dear Lord and on his 1996 40th Anniversary Edition album.

  • I am so glad this is on now. I haven't heard that for 40yrs, and even though I dont understand the words, Johnny singing it is so beautiful.

  • Thank you for uploading this great

classic in the voice of the unique

    Johnny Mathis

  • I remember you. You made a reference to this song on another post. It reminded me of you when boydboswell requested it.

  • Few singers have a repertory of songs as

vast a Johnny Mathis. He has been recording for more than 50 years. Good

    thing he started very young.

  • My father instilled a love of Johnny Mathis in me. I never knew he recorded a song like this. He is so gifted. Thank you and shanem dank

  • Johnny sings this masterpiece with conviction
