I saw these miniseries at the age of 12-16 in German television. I was deeply impressed. I wish us Germans had the same national pride as you folks. Could be proud of our soldiers without everyone look at us from a strange angle. Now as I'm adult I really wish I could see that movie again. Sadly I noticed there's no DVD release in Europe only US. Sadly this DVD is region 1 and not playable on a PAL player. :(
My great grandad was a doctor in Teddy Roosevlt's roughriders - He had also been in the Indian Wars. He never learnt to ride and died in the cubaln campaign aged 82 - of old age
A stirring transition into Elmer Bernstein's G Troop theme at around 3:45 ... FANTASTIC! I really love this opening. But if I'm not mistaken, this particular arrangement is not on the CD. I think you'd have to record "Patriots and Outlaws" and then merge it with the last part of "Training G Troop" to get a similar effect.
Thank you Asteriks for posting this. The line "Anything was possible... if you were an American" brings a tear to my eye. And then when the Riders are traveling by train and all those Civil War vets are saluting them and the little boy asks "But grandpa, aint they Yankees?" And the old man says " No... they're Americans" This is a fantastic movie. The spirit of unity and patriotism displayed in this film is moving, but sadly, lacking somewhat in our time...
Has anyone here heard of Thomas Jefferson's "Empire for Liberty" theory. It basically calls for an American Empire, which although it must conquer and destroy and sometimes oppress, such actions are justified in the fact that they are done to promote the power, security, and freedom of the United States. And the beautiful thing about our Empire is that anyone on Earth may come here and enjoy the freedoms that men like the Rough Riders fought for. I believe TR felt the same way about imperialism.
@LRooster4Prez You can get it at Amazon. I watched it yesterday with the commentary. VERY interesting. Milius is a HUGE TR fan. He also directed The Wind & the Lion. If you haven't seen that, one of the great adventure films with TR in it.
what is the music in the background at 1:47? When the title of the movie first comes onto the screen? I love the music. I"m watching it in history class- no one seems to like it but me. After reading the comments- i'm very happy to be watching this.
@Asteriks but wait- i went to go search for it and it gave me some like irish song.......... dang... who knew searching for instrumental music was so hard?

To Teddy Roosevelt: one of the greatest imperialists in history and one of the architects of the completely bogus Spanish American War; but the best part of the story was yet to come: in 1899 the brutal war against the Phillipines started and we got to kill a whole lot of non-white people; just like General Custer did years before on the Great Plains!
this movie is awsome I have it on Dvd 2-disks and it is so epic I have to watch it every two weeks, the acting and music is so well done it inspires you to be heroic
The spirit is still there my friend, the only problem is there are so many people in power and wealth who are greedy and dishonest, they poison the greatness that lies in america and its citezens, but that was present also during this time, the governemnt used the Maine to inade Cuba for the sugar and tobacco, however the soldiers went to fight for freedome, and to help those being oppressed, They still have that courage, honour and sense of justice in them.

I must admit, when I heard Tom Berranger was going to play Teddy Roosevelt I thought, I don't think so, but boy did he prove me wrong. GREAT MOVIE!!!

That moment at 3:51 when the music picks up and Uncle Sam's image comes on sends a tingle up the spine. So good.

@lottabottle05
It's the theme music that Elmer Bernstein's son, Peter, composed specially for this film (it starts slow, for about a minute, then really takes off)…
Also do a YouTube search for:
"Rough Riders" Garryowen

This is the finest opening credit of any movie - So dramatic - Makes you proud to be an American - makes you ask what went wrong?
Love the movie

@1967mustanggta
It could be that all of the drama and music is about America's first war of imperialism started under false pretenses (like others I could name).

we still have a big stick and we're still imperializing the world in the name of freedom like they did
their 9/11 was the USS Maine
