When he says "Down in the park with a friend called 5" the "friend" is called 5 because he is the fith clone of a person. Also "Down in the park where the machmen meet". A machman is a genetically modified human, or clone. So its not about war, its about a clone. lol sorry

Hi mate, your analysis isn't quite right. Numan wrote sci-fi stories and scenes as a teenager. The society was a human / machine one, Orwellian in many ways; curfews and control. The machines were gradually removing the humans. 'Friends' were machines which would provide a service to humans - as Numan said, it may have been for sex or to play a game of chess... The Park was a killing ground, an arena. The privileged humans could watch the Machmen hunt humans deemed as criminals.

I know that he wrote a story and in fact a lot of the replicas album was based on it. There are bits in the songs that are random and can spark different opinions of what this song is about. When it is all pieced together it all makes sense. I think that your take on this is very good. :) Though there still are bits in the song which signify clones.
