Look up Noam Chomsky's "Failed States" authored in 2006 and "Failed State" on wikipedia and you will see that the United States nearly fits the description. People not in mobile fields need to recognize the importance of the decline of state authority in regulating the recognition of human rights, which is a far more important factor then merely the regulation of wages as it is the determining factor in such legislation.

Please listen to Helen and give us what every other industrialized nation on earth has: single payer, universal health coverage. The US ranks 37th in healthcare, behind every other industrialized nation and behind many nations that teeter on 3rd world--all of those nations provide single-payer, government health coverage.

How much longer will Congress stand by while people die or go bankrupt, afraid to stand up for what every reasonable human being knows to be right?

You act as if no one would die or get sick with a universal health coverage system. Of course when people in those other countries really get sick they come to America for surgery.I personally dont want the government to tell me when and how I can recieve healthcare.I would like the pick the times, doctor, and the treatment course.If we adopt universal health coverage you will not get to decide those things.I think it is ridiculous for the government to decide who gets treatment and who waits.

This is how universal coverage works: when people get sick, they go to the Dr. or hospital. Gov't doesn't make decisions on when and who, because everyone is covered. I have been the recipient of healthcare in 2 European countries, and it was the best healthcare I ever received. Another American friend of mine got sick in Nairobi, Kenya, and the healthcare he received there was superior to anything he got at home. People still die, but not because they can't afford healthcare.

Well I thank you for being civil in your response, but I must disagree. See you say that gov't doesn't make decisions because everyone is "Covered". Covered by who? Because someone is paying the bill,which would be the gov't in some form or another.They would either put up the hoops for the insurance companies or assume more direct control.This means that the gov't would ultimately decide the fate of everyones healthcare. There would be requirements for care and more rationing of adv procedures.

I base my opinions on personal experience, over a decade of living overseas, research into the US health system, and the findings of the WHO. Hopefully, your opinions are grounded on facts as well. I would also encourage you to research the best healthcare systems in the world: Switzerland, Japan, France...

I live in Florida and know many Canadians who live here for 4-6 months out of the year and wait until theyre here for their medical treatment.What you describe is a utopia where everyone gets the most adv treatment without admitting that even a fraction of that would involve rationing, treatment requirements/prerequisites, aswell as long wait lists.Healthcare being widely available does not make it superior in quality. With universal healthcare its impossible for the gov not to have a hand.
