bush did not cut spending...as a result the defecit got out of control, which hurt the dollar...the weakening of the dollar hurt foreign investment...that held back the economy...obama is simply repeating bush's mistake with massive spending...it makes the dollar even weaker, maybe even on the verge of collapse some economists have said...that also makes us vulnerable in that china is buying up a lot of our debt...i would prefer not to rely on china if we didn't have to.
Do you know if foreign investment actually declined during the Bush years? Because I am not sure. But the dollar weakening actually makes China LESS likely to keep buying our debt. But here's a hint: in a recession, if you cut spending with taxes, there is no net effect on the economy. You need to run a deficit by spending and cutting in the short term, to increase effective demand. Bush was wrong to run deficits because we had no downturn and were at full employment.

I think it is just really terrible that all these little pet projects are hidden throughout a this rushed trillion dollar spending bill. With all these Americans unemployed, and many families facing foreclosure it is just no time to spend money on understanding frogs or fish genomes. I believe that Obama has good intentions and I hope it succeeds for all our sakes, but unfortunately I seriously doubt it will.

Money for volcano monitoring is not (did you notice a volcano in Alaska just became active?). In fact many of those earmarks have the potential to stimulate local economies by funding research into improving their agriculture - among other things.

The reason Congress passed this bill was to stimulate Obama's so called "presidency", stimulate the democratic party, and not only that, Congress is uninformed, uneducated, and careless about what the American people are going through. bush did not cut spending...as a result the defecit got out of control, which hurt the dollar...the weakening of the dollar hurt foreign investment...that held back the economy...obama is simply repeating bush's mistake with massive spending...it makes the dollar even weaker, maybe even on the verge of collapse some economists have said...that also makes us vulnerable in that china is buying up a lot of our debt...i would prefer not to rely on china if we didn't have to.

Do you know if foreign investment actually declined during the Bush years? Because I am not sure. But the dollar weakening actually makes China LESS likely to keep buying our debt. But here's a hint: in a recession, if you cut spending with taxes, there is no net effect on the economy. You need to run a deficit by spending and cutting in the short term, to increase effective demand. Bush was wrong to run deficits because we had no downturn and were at full employment.

How the hell are they even reading these bills and understanding them? I think it is just really terrible that all these little pet projects are hidden throughout a this rushed trillion dollar spending bill. With all these Americans unemployed, and many families facing foreclosure it is just no time to spend money on understanding frogs or fish genomes. I believe that Obama has good intentions and I hope it succeeds for all our sakes, but unfortunately I seriously doubt it will.

While I appreciate your moderate tone, your referral to the earmarks as pet projects is a bit egregious. A bridge to nowhere is a pet project. Money for volcano monitoring is not (did you notice a volcano in Alaska just became active?). In fact many of those earmarks have the potential to stimulate local economies by funding research into improving their agriculture - among other things.
