The only thing the Olympics brought us was rampant speculation from developers and home prices. They over-built the whole Olympic village with overpriced granite kitchens, and now they can't sell it. So incredibly wasteful, but you can be sure the big corporations that were in the loop made their money. The rest of us will be paying the bill for these Olympics for decades.
Take an economics class idiot. The money you invest will bring in more than you spend due to tourists. By the way Mr. Holy, you live in a nicer neighborhood than me and you are driving a pretty nice car. Why don't you walk and make another donation Hack!
When you get down to it, the Olympics has turned into a substitute for war and a great product placement opportunity. And don't forget the propaganda factor.
Give it 20 years and the Olympics will be as relevant as the League of Nations.
I like GammaAlphaPi's idea - why not have different countries/cities specialize in single sports. Put them where they are "sure things" so that you don't have to sweat about snow in Lake Placcid. And I know myself that there are very few british columbians that are going to get to see any of the olympics live, and those who do are limited to the few tickets they got by lottery.
There certainly must be enough stadiums throughout the world already. Why not have an Olympics that spans the globe. Skiing in Austria, figure skating in Germany, skeet shooting in Scotland. All during the same three weeks, summer/winter, every 4 years. Each sport in an already existing arena or stadium. I think that would be a good way to solve this issue of Olympic cities being built. Thanks for bringing this issue up.
They aren't even helping their own B.C.ers. I just recieved an eviction notice last month 4 November 1st. Not because I have given the landlord any cause, he wants to renovate the house. Why now? Because he can fetch a pretty penny 4 a 3 bedroom bungalow 4 the Olympics. After that, he won't have a problem finding another tenant, since there is not much available here at any time. BCers are being displaced like crazy over this. I am disabled & this is very hard on me. The gov. is not 4 disabled.
Why? What did Expo 86 do for the average BCer? Nothing. Many people got displaced from their low rental places & some are still homeless today, & some already died from exposure. They pulled 75% of all BC Forest Firefighters just to put out the fire in Whistler while others' homes went up in flames. The rural areas are being negatively impacted as well. For every dollar they make, many BCers will never recover. God Bless!!
nice job dude!

That's a tough topic. I don't know what to pick. Its a demonstration of the capacity of human ability but is it worth to spend all that money?
Maybe we have just been spending too much money on the Olympics. We can still have the Olympics but lets tone it done a bit.
When I mean a bit, I mean a lot.

We don't NEED the olympics people, wake the hell up.
Instead we should be spending our money on shit that makes us richer long term. not the 5 year short term because we're greedy and nieve.

one brit mentioned a idea that sounded reasonable, which was to move the games back to athens.

Well yea, thats a good idea, but how're you going to put which sport with which place? That'll cause a lot of contraversy and disagreements.
