Can someone explain why, instead of putting their olympic team in such a tough spot by making all 4 scores count b/c of the injuries of Sam and Chelsie, they can't bring in 1 or more of the alternates for a couple events to have a better shot at decent scores? Why risk mistakes and chance at a medal when u have athletes designated 2 compete in case of injuries on the team like they did with the Hamm twins? Aren't they there for this reason? Are there stipulations to the rules? What am I missing?
I don't know why they did that but I also think that making those scores count is what put a lot of pressure on those girls which made them falter in their routines.
It's hard to think about if the U.S. would have used other alternate team members thru out the competition and if some of the younger Chinese athletes (if you believe they are too young)were not part of the team, how the outcome would have changed.
I think they really wanted Chellsie there to do bars, and her bars score better than all of the alternates did at the time, and it's her best event. But if they knew that Pez would be injured, too, I bet they would have dropped her and brought in Jana or Ivana. Possibly both.
I wonder if people were expecting Nastia to be on top this time around since she came from the same gym as Carly, its kind of nice to see someone else on top now, Shawn's story is very inspiring. But i agree the Magnificent Seven in 96 were amazing. We all fell in love with them and this year looks pretty promising as well.

What? No. These American girls were phenomenal, deserved to win, and won in an event that as clearly bias against them, where the Chinese girls were wobbling off of the beam, falling out of simple turns and landing on their butts from bars.
I'm a dancer, so I'm in shape. But I would rather be fat than a cheater. Fat people at least have a shot at integrity. At least if they win something, they might have truly WON. You fish for awful excuses. These American girls were in phenomenal shape.

The did some calculations, and even the experts said that even if Alicia would have gotten an excellent score in both events she screwed up on, the u.s. team still would have finished second. the chinese difficulty level is what gave them the gold. they had more room to work with it.

I think the use of steroids is not as bad as it used to be but still. They just were all fucked up this last one. Poor girls. Then you got China and the U.S. bitching at each other to pick an economical hot spot. Well screw all you people. Athleticism used to be about health and exploring the capabilities of the human body. It's so obvious. Their legs are twice and thrice as thick as the girls from the other countries, they are more hyper, stalky, and their necks are huge. They hardly look like young women. Everybody just sets it aside and tries to act like they are used to it but come on! That's nasty and that's not right. Can someone explain why, instead of putting their olympic team in such a tough spot by making all 4 scores count b/c of the injuries of Sam and Chelsie, they can't bring in 1 or more of the alternates for a couple events to have a better shot at decent scores? Why risk mistakes and chance at a medal when u have athletes designated 2 compete in case of injuries on the team like they did with the Hamm twins? Aren't they there for this reason? Are there stipulations to the rules? What am I missing?

I don't know why they did that but I also think that making those scores count is what put a lot of pressure on those girls which made them falter in their routines.

It's hard to think about if the U.S. would have used other alternate team members thru out the competition and if some of the younger Chinese athletes (if you believe they are too young)were not part of the team, how the outcome would have changed.

I think they really wanted Chellsie there to do bars, and her bars score better than all of the alternates did at the time, and it's her best event. But if they knew that Pez would be injured, too, I bet they would have dropped her and brought in Jana or Ivana. Possibly both.

I wonder if people were expecting Nastia to be on top this time around since she came from the same gym as Carly, its kind of nice to see someone else on top now, Shawn's story is very inspiring. But i agree the Magnificent Seven in 96 were amazing. We all fell in love with them and this year looks pretty promising as well.

idk, she didnt really get a chance to prove herself...she was still coming back from her back injury...we dont kno how she would have done at the camp. according to a few articles i read, bridget came in and really kicked butt at the camp. so, she may have made it even if shayla hadn't broken her leg.

thats probably true. beating the russians that year was huge. but, since im only 16 and only know about the mag7 b/c of research and such, these girls seem so much more real to me. i mean, w/ attblueroom behind the team and the fact that i've been following them closely since 07 nationals, i feel like i know them, and if they win, it will mean a lot to me.

i see your point but i feel like there was so much more of a team bond back in 96' but thats just my opinion and each gymnast had strong attributes that contributed to the win. it would mean a lot for the americans to win the gold again, but i also probably formed this opinion because i havent been following this team as closely
