This is not the Costa Concordia ... and it is difficult to tell from the video as to how close the ship was. When you zoom in it is even more difficult to tell.
any one watching this video may not have heard about the rivalry between the captains about who can get the closest to land and blow the horn. There was a report released about an email that surfaced between the captain of the Concordia and another Captain with the same boat. Yes this Captain was playing around in the dark with a 500,000,000 dollar boat with 3000 people on-board with one hand up the skirt of some tart while he was talking on the phone with ten men waiting for the order to turn.
When we were in Dubrovnik for 10 days large ships passed through the channel along the back of the old town, looking at this though I would say this is far to close, it is a deep water channel immediately off of the Old Town walls but no ship we ever saw got this close! I would say this looks a little too close for comfort!
We were pretty startled by the ship passing by Dubrovnik and we had seen other ships that day departing the port. It caught our attention and that is why I shot the video.
Every situation is different. I don't think this video is the same as the situation in Italy. It is possible for large ships to pass through narrow bodies of water without incident, the one above shows that. It would be interesting to know if this is a common occurrence in Dubrovnik. It certainly wasn't the case in Italy
@urnotme1970 ive been on 17 cruises and never seen a ship sail this close to land before. would say it is a huge risk, the costa concordia had taken huge risks on previous occasions, accident waiting to happen wouldnt you say
Well, that sums it up. Captains are dicks

Strange that he is sounding three blasts, which means "I am about to go astern" yet he is still making way forward. Fun and Games?

Close is not the point, the important thing is how deep the water is on the ship's route.

@michaelidesca I'm not much a boat person. Do you know if they have the instruments to see the depth of the water, from inside the ship?
OneSkiWonder 2 weeks ago
@OneSkiWonder They definitely do, that's why the captain said 'It showed only water' when he was interviewed.

@OneSkiWonder Most of these vessels have such instruments. In some places a legal requirement. Unk. if 'Costa' was so equipped.

Telephoto lenses always make things appear close together. Still probably too close. Definitely not a "shocking" video!
