When your standing next to him and waiting for him to relax with the rope on his foot, cant he kick forward and get you that way? I have a 4 year old colt and he almost broke my leg 2 years ago and I am still limping. I am scared to go near his back end!
@blondana He can pull the robe to the side to redirect his hoof. Also, notice how he's standing back and to the side with his legs at an angle to the hips that's harder for the horse to hit. Also also, fearing your horse is only setting your relationship up to fail. You need to figure out what you did wrong to make him kick you, and work on making him stop. Fearing something he does shows up (to your horse) as you moving away from his pressure. Don't do that.
So much easier to teach them this when their babies and still small lol
I had a 20 something year old mare... she didn't kick but she had the habit of leaning on people doing her feet... I trained her out of that by dropping her foot suddenly when she started leaning and she lost balance. She didnt like that so she quit leaning. She was never ever nasty though she was a very gentle horse just had a few old habits i can't talk I have my own bad habits lol.
Great videos! Question: Is a horse every too old to train not to kick? There's a kicker where I volunteer but I've heard from people (that are more experienced than I am) that some horses are too old and set in their ways? I find that hard to believe but wanting to know your answer. I kinda feel you can retrain them (as proof here!) no matter the age (we are talking 10-15yrs old, not a 30 yr old horse!) I wouldnt try it as I am not that experienced (true to myself lol) but just wondering!
