Haight, Columbia...good guesses. This is actually the Hampton Coliseum (now known as the Google gArena) in Hampton, Virginia in 1989. The audio is obviously dubbed. This was the sound check and they were playing "Stairway To Heaven". You can tell, cause this is the only song were the gar plays that double neck 12/6 six string guitar.
Where's the jam? The song goes right from cold rain and snow to sitting on top of the world in less than a second. I have never heard this at any concert before.
The music does not match the film. I think it is just scratchy record tracks from their first studio album. They were playing New Potato Caboose during this part of the show. Jerry played a Guild Starfire till he switched to a black Les Paul Custom and Gold top seen here.
Yes! Music and picture not matching?Sounds like the studio recording for their first album. The audio only has one drummer. The visuals are cool because the band looks a lot more animated than they were when I saw them circa late 70`s. So Jerry played a Guild back then?
dudes, if one were to get technical, this footage is columbia for sure (far too many intellectuals milling about), whilst the music is same vintage, but not what they're playing visually, on film jerry is playing les paul but the cold rain and snow has whammy bar (guild), therefore it's wacky, but works...
I'm not sure, but it looks like a college campus / public square unlike any landmmarks I know of around Haight St. Also, I am assuming it's '68 - they've got both drummers - and the Columbia situation happened in '68. It's very interesting footage. It's upbeat but intense playing. You can hear that kind of energy on audio in the old recordings - but it's great to see how animated they are on film.
I watched this a couple more times and am convinced it must be Columbia -- due to the surprised reaction of the audience and its eclectic nature. In any event -- it's a gem and a delight. Much too urban to be Haight St,

This is about as early as it gets for the Dead. I don't think they ever played this fast since. All the weed mellowed them out fast!

Another reason this could be Columbia U. 1968: 39 seconds in, is that student "radical" Mark Rudd?
