  • Paul Reubens, when he got caught masturbating in a public theater.

  • Really one of TNG's bet episodes!

  • "Does this sound like a reasonable source of action for you?"

    *crickets*

  • Kain, at the Pillars of Nosgoth!

  • Every now and then TNG rose above the usual techno-babble, to deliver wonderful incisive stories like this one.

THIS is classic Trek! I'm sure Gene Rodenberry would have approved!

  • My #1 Favorite Startrek NextGen episode...and it generalizes to oh so many things.... (e.g. Barack and Bainer at Washington, Wallsteet - When The Walls Fell, Gadafi - With Sails Unfurled.....)

  • September 1991.

    You weren't there man...

  • I think the Tamarians are supposed to be understood in this episode as a civilization that is far advanced beyond the level of the Federation. Their metaphorical language can not be translated because it is far more evolved than the speech of the members of the Federation. Picard was chosen as the person for the Tamarians to make First Contact with. The technology of the Tamarians is far more powerful and advanced than the Federation.

  • Shaka! When the walls fell!

  • Consider that the made up language that the aliens are using is a language that only uses metaphors, yet the metaphors are described using English!

  • @paulslocum consider the Universal Translator that could translate it into English but not the meaning

  • @IraMaximus as if the klingons have the same sentence structure as english :p

  • @pierreo33 haha very true

  • ANTHROPOLOGY class made me watch this! XD

  • in tamarian legend, darmok and Jalad got totally wasted and hooked up at a party at tanagras.

  • Easily top three of all TNG episodes.

  • I saw Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra, summer of 91 man, great fucking concert.

  • I wonder if the river in winter means frozen, so he's basically telling the first officer to stop and be quiet.

  • @RasrapSmurf That's it, yes. "Shaka! When the walls fell" seems to imply failure, in this case, it seems, failure in the strategy of communication with the Federation.

The whole episode is about conceptual schemes. If a language can't be translated into another, is it still a language? Is a language consisting in metaphor a language of the same kind as our own? And what necessitates such a narrow field of expression, especially when metaphor is enriching rather than narrowing in our languages?

  • I could watch that episode each week :)

  • My favorite TNG episode...Temba, his arms always open my friends.

  • @jros83 I am so sorry, but when I read this I laughed until i cried. Thank you. I needed it. :D x

  • Fcuking Darmok @ Tenagra!! This is my vote. I love this episode!

  • Darmok and Jalad got totally wasted and hooked up at a party at Tanagra's

  • ... I don't know what that means. I should watch this ep ...

  • Thumbs up if you're here because of XKCD!

  • @atommicatgmaildotcom ? must have missed that one message me it?

  • I was so proud of myself for guessing how they communicate as soon as I heard their words. I wish I could serve with Picard.

  • THE RIVER TAMAK - in winter

  • @ Camaro: those are my favorite episodes too. Fantastic storytelling and acting...

  • Buttonhole the days return...

  • @TimeGents Shaka, when the falls fell

  • @MrEriklenn An excellent episode :)

  • Best TNG episode ever.

  • darmok and jalad at tenagra with arms wide . when the walls fell XD XD X D XD only fans would know

  • This is a beautiful episode, because it handles the topic of communication so delicately. That moment when the threshold between confusion and understanding is crossed is the instant when a people stop being foreigners to each other and may begin to be friends.

  • @JoshuaH688 An eternal lesson for all of us :)

  • I like it when he says "In winter".That obviously means " shut the fuck up". Great episode.Thats Paul Winfield as Dathon.I can't believe he was a homosexual.

  • @1nativeaustintexan I can't believe you did not know. ;-)

  • One of my favorite episodes.

  • this and the inner light are my 2 favorites

  • TNG at its finest.

  • @Allabaster84 Amen :)
