This is G. Barris lying about building Herbie. He had nothing to do with the building of the NINE Herbies used in the original "The Love Bug." Why someone with such a good resume feels he has to lie and claim other people's work is a mystery. He does it again and again.
@crashroader IF you can get a '63 ragtop, the proper L87 paintjob, proper seats, correct interior colors, and most importantly the RIGHT stripes (depending on which movie) and correct font numbers. Piece of cake. ;) I'm working on one, so I know. Oh, and it has to have a personality. :)
George built some great cars in his day, but Herbie he had absolutely nothing to do with for the movies except for the 97 TV when he had a cameo. All the cars were built by either EMPI, Speed Unlimited or Disney.
George Was approached by Disney in 1969 however Technicians in the effects and art Dept Made 8 Herbies for the First Film, all did different things for the scenes, George was infact called in to make up the famous split in two car in the final scenes of The Love Bug (1969) but 53 herbies were not made only 34 were constructed by Disney for all Films...Georges memory isnt allthat good remember how old he is.
God I love how Herbie looks, especially on those wheels. Everytime I see a plain white 60s bug on those wheels - I think Herbie. Nothing else. What a brilliant little car.
he had nothing to do with the General Lee either..
and the old fart is a liar. #53 was from Don Drysdale, A MLB baseball player from the era. and.. they had a parking lot full of vehicles, and let the Disney employees choose. everyone kept talking to the bug, petting it, etc.
Honestly, George. I respect you a great deal for the work you've done, but you simply didn't have anything to do with Herbie. Everything said in that video is totally untrue. It doesn't even make sense. The only Herbie you built was a replica that toured the country. Surely you must remember this?
@2005HFL they made exactly 34 herbies combined through all 6 movies, however, they had filmed 54 cars together, not 53 Volkswagens, but 54 diffrent cars of all sorts used in all 6 movies

Herbie Goes Bananas, Paco (I have his autograph) just calls Herbie Ocho, 5+3 = 8

Does George Barris just decide that he may as well claim to have created everything?

Ha! George Barris at Gatlinburg. I never thought of his rich ass stepping foot into Tennessee.

Guys, 53 stood for the number 8. "Octo" in spanish. In one of the first movies the # 8 was taken by another car so they used "53" instead
