The game actually makes reference to the plot hole later, when Alex gives the lamp t Jollo. Jollo says something like "How did you know which lamp to pick?" and alex replies "Oh, I had a feeling"

A fake poison. It stops the heart and then starts it back up. It's been years since I've played, but I think you pick it up on the Isle of Wonder.

With no explanation WHATsoever as to how and why the fake poison just HAPPENED to be in the garden... the game had a few plot holes...
