...you stand there with your fixed expression, casting doubt on all I have to say, why don't you touch me, touch me, why don't you touch me, touch me, now, now, now, now, now.......
@2bullitt Peter is still incredible. The fact he's the most, if not the only active ex member of the band, makes you wonder what a huge creative force he must have been on these years with the band when he was younger. Not for nothing this is rightly called "Gabriel's era". because it really was.
@vivelavidarocka Peter isn't the only active member of Genesis. Steve Hackett is still touring and releasing albums. Mike Rutherford playes with Mike & The Mechanics, and Tony Banks is just about to release a new orchestral album.
Phil's solo career was almost enough for me to loose all respect for 'em, personally. But he used to be a drummer's drummer back then.... Damn popularity and fame....
This show was the first time i had even heard of Genesis. Had done some mescaline or something earlier, walked into a room where this was on t.v. and was blown away. Saw them the following Thanksgiving night doing the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. This was their encore. Awesome.
Anyone Want this Song On Rock Band? Then Request it Because this is the Shit (when One of the Songs By Gabriel (and Later Collins) And The Boys AKA Genesis that is The Shit)
By the way, it's as annoying as it is indicative that none of this material is on the official Midnight Special compilations. Why, though, didn't the band get the source videos for the box set from the masters, instead of using these (comparatively) crappy fan tapings?!?
This captures the band at their peak, however is was not on the Midnight Special on 20/12/73 but rather a month later on 25/1/74. Still I wonder if any Steve Miller Band fans were converted that night. You have to imagine these clips were played well into towards the end of the show.
I think on the commentary to one of the remastered CDs, Gabriel still seems annoyed by Steve Miller's condescending introduction to the group. I didn't see it when it aired, unfortunately, but I suspect you are right that it likely aired very late into the program!
@breathspray yeah, but to be fair to Hackett, Tony Banks was pretty much the more headstrong member of the band and Hackett wasn't really allowed much guitar heroics, too much going on already and Genesis weren't really looking for flash, and he was more into atmospheres than showy guitar anyway. He allows himself moments where he goes off though.
strange that gabriel was never cast for movies like many other, much less charismatic musicians were -- but there are many things strange abuout peter gabriel -- this was their best time as a live band!
@5jerry1 I knew that. He was always the theatrical one (see "Shock the Monkey", "Sledgehammer", etc.) I was joking and I think the person who said it was Phil Collins was too.
There was another post where someone confused Gabriel with Collins. I responded to both posts in short order. There are lots of people who don't know, I was clarifying just in case.
Saw this when it aired. I was 12 at the time and was not ready for prog rock yet, though I remember this vividly because when he came out as the old man it scared the crap out of me! I envy whoever got to see them in this era of Genesis. Great band with Gabriel!
If this was TV, did Gabriel have to change "flesh" to "face" in the closing part? Great performance of a great song nonetheless. I saw them about 3-4 months after this performance. They were great.
the members of Genesis are so talented

Too bad it blips out at 2:18. I like the old man mask for the climax. Brings a new tone and understanding to the piece.

Peter Gabriel was a trip... with his get-ups... music was out there too... great stuff... My favorite album with him has got to be Foxtrot though....

Peter's so irresistible here. Even as an old, he still is. Is it wrong that I think this? ;)

@ballroomblitzkid1994 Not at all kiddo. Talented older people could be a turn on.
Now, is it wrong that I told you that? Society's norms could be very touchy about the subject.

Closing lyrics open with...
"She's a lady
She's got time
Brush back your hair
Let get to know your face
She's a lady, she is mine
Brush back your hair
and let me get to know your flesh"
Always been that way, wasn't changed for TV.
