  • @mlee2001 a lot of grocery stores are starting to carry it in the asian food sections you can find the "thai" brand it isnt as strong but it works.

  • for the roasted chilis...what kind are they? they look like chile de arbol

  • @chipo1987bouncer dry chili. u can get them in specialty stores... mexican, indian, arab. whatever

  • My absolute favorite Thai or Lao food.Second favotite, cucumber salad Thai style.

  • No, They didn't forgot lemon grass. But another dish that we called "Thai Beef Salad" has lemongrass. Larb and Beef Salad are similar but the way they cook are difference. Larb made with minced meat but Beef Salad made with grill diced beef.

  • @mlee2001

Unfortunately, you can't substitute the fish sauce with anything else. Adding soy sauce will change the flavor of the dish. Also, the fish sauce acts as the salt in the dish and gives it a distinct flavor. Your local Asian market will surely have it. If they don't, it's not really an Asian market :p.

  • Daughter sounds like Meg Griffin from Family Guy.

  • I cant find fish sauce anywhere! Can I use soy sauce or oyster sauce instead?

  • her mother said that her daughter is her genie pig

  • @07farizan85 lol!

  • ลาบ โอ้ อีสานบ้านตู เหอๆๆ

  • I found this recipe ages ago and just wanted to say that I make this all the time with lots of variation. Great flavours- and as long as you have the essentials, you can add anything that you've got in your fridge! Thanks a lot for introducing me to a delicious Thai food!

  • i love how she said "one cup of chili pepper"

  • คุณป้า ทำซะโคตรใหญ่เวอรื อลังการ จะเอาไปเสิร์ฟโต๊ะจีนงานบวช รึไงเนี่ย

  • Spicy raw laab w/ rice. Ughhh my gramps make the best laab, I love being Asian.

Fish laab is also yummy. :)

  • Spicy raw laab w/ rice. Ughhh my gramps make the best laab, I love being Asian.

  • I love you mama, you guys make a great team. could you possibly show me how to make "lemongrass chili chicken" I saw it on tv cookiing chanel that comes out on sundays, this thai guy goes to cook in the villages amongst cows and chickens, beautiful farm setting and he made this dish but i could not copy the ingredients. thank you

  • god that's going to be HOT

  • i like the raw beef laab, with beer.

  • she really burnt those chilis and rice

  • Thai BangCock people don't eat laab, only Lao and Lao essan eat laab.

  • @KoadPauLaoDang that is so not true

  • @KoadPauLaoDang this is when Lao nigger don't know about manner go back to your country and eat your dog

all of your people in Thai are only servant that clean my house or other poor job

"how does it feel when other talk some trash back to you oh nvm you are still an animal btw"

  • Thanks

  • @crazikido2 Good luck to you :)

  • thanx for the thai food you made on youtube. i'll be making that for my siblings and I, today.

  • yeah right "porcupine227". as if you know how to cook edible food. i'm pretty sure you eat burnt food most your life from making mistakes and too afraid to try something new to eat. roasted....you know what is roasted? just don't eat the burned food you make. stop making yourself look like idiots.

  • @ghosto fpaulrevere From what I see, it's called "BURNT!" And burnt food cause

cancer. I wonder if she really knows how to cook Thai food or any food at all! Please

be responsible for what you did to Thai Food!

  • Whoa! Burnt rice and dried chillies? Watch out for cancer!!!!

  • @Porcupine277 Its not burnt its toasted. And what do chillies have to do with cancer? Lol.

  • imagine what they would make for multilingual night at school...

  • กินลาบกระมังนี้เสร็จ เตรียมตัวเป็นมะเร็งได้เลย

  • i wish they made raw labb instead cause the cook laab dont have as much flavor as the raw ones

  • I put beef trips, beef bile (bitter bile juice), fresh Thai chilies in my beef Larb. It makes more spicy and yummy. ummm

  • OK...oK...Ok,,,Oh-kay...Oh-kay????...Ooooo Kaaaaaaaaa,,,

I have rice noodles that could contribute more.

  • great!

  • Do you have a video of how to make pad kee mao aka drunken noodles? It's my favorite. I would also like to know how to make the large flat noodles not to curl up after you cook them.

  • I use the big heavy granite mortar and pestle from Chatuchak market to grind the roasted rice!

  • okay....okay....okay....

  • u guys forgot the lemon grass

  • Thailand Laos makes it different. I put ginger, kiffer lime leaves, bpadag, bile, and the meat is not that grounded. I like the raw ones, soo good and a little bitter too... no lime though.

  • im thai... i luv laab for i dont like the beef one

  • I like laab but made with chicken

  • I had an epiphany while enjoying this dish at my local Thai restaurant recently: This is the Thai answer to "Sloppy Joes" -- only healthy! No bread. Very lean meat. Served over cabbage leaves or Romaine lettuce leaves both of which act as "boats" on which to scoop the tasty "Joe". I love this dish for being (apparently) easy to make -- and quick! I can't wait to try! -- immensely satisfying to the taste buds (sour and spicy), and unpretentious. If westerners (like me) ate this for burgers...!!!

  • I love Larb and Thai food too! It's very delicious and very very healthy for you!!!

  • where's the TRIPE? I like it with tripe =D

  • No wonder Thai are busy with food all day haha. But great dish, only they should stop adding so much sugar and salt and usage of palmoil.

  • luv this dish... so easy to make n u can use any kind of meat u want XD

  • lol i thought it was lab.like it was the thai food lab.

  • Don't you add salt ?

  • to make a "Kao Kua", i think you'd better use "Krok" i tyhink it's better

  • its my first time to see a red cabbage.:)) so idiot hahaha

  • This isn't quite the same as the Lao original, but these ingredients are easier to find in the West.

  • i made this before it make want to make some..i love asian food this is make me hungry...

  • love your channel, i wish my mom could teach me some sort of ethnic cuisine, my mom was more of a pre packaged, semi homemade, "microwave is the best invention ever" kinda mom... Blah. So cool to have recipes passed down that are genuine ethnic cuisine and not some all American Betty Crocker knock off. lol

    kinda jealous.... : )

  • it's too BURN!! both Chili and Rice T^T

  • yeah, definitely Shallots instead of red onions, but then again if you can't find the, the red onions would do. It is a very healthy and full of flavor dish. Make sure you dont' skip all the herbs (cilantro, mint, especially) and a bit of sugar would help to mellow the dish as well, still saltiness and acidity stand out.

  • i like my laab.. a little raw wit lots of hot peppers wit sticky rice..but yours look aites.lol..

  • well are you guys here for cooking lesson or are you looking for gals? better pay attention to the color of the food than the color of their skin wthat's the matter anyway since they can cook you a good dishes?

  • i love to make laab i love everything about thai food

  • Her mother is just wonder woman!!! Why she can do really Thai tradition food. This LAAB I usually cook by the instant LAAB powder from Lobo!! I think it is noe that good but just find. But She did really totally yummy!!! OMG, I Love you MOM!!!! <3

  • I love Laab!!!!!

  • normally, we don't add the red onions but we add shallots. in other hand, I think it's hard to find shallots there.

  • I usually roast the sweet "sticky" rice. Nuttier flavour.

  • @Nefarioso: Please, how long and at what temperature do you roast the rice? Must you stir from time to time or "set it and forget it"? Many thanks! I love Larb -- much healthier than McDonalds! :-)))

  • How can she cut the red onion and the gree n onion without crying.

  • lao laap we used sweet rice for roasting not just any rice anyway, i use kind the similar technique... as use lean ground beef tenderloin and the fresh ground is also the best meat so the taste so yammy...

  • @Laogal: Yes, I read on Wikipedia that this is really a Laotian dis that caught on and became adapted regionally in neighboring areas. Very interesting about the rice. Thanks for the tip!

  • Tastyscabs hit the nail on the head. I'm just surprised on how the daughter is so clueless about cooking. I guess when they came to America her mom said we're in America now so my daughter will be like all the other white girls and never learn how to cook...lol

  • like because she is a woman she must have the desire to learn how to cook... lol. i bet she can't sew or do traditional Thai dance either, how shameful!

Her father will never be able to marry her off...

    LMAO...

  • I think she's pretending to be clueless for the sake of making the video.

  • I think the daughter is not so clueless as you think. I think, she is just playing a role, asking all these questions we, non-Thai people, would ask. This is a trick that makes the videos more interactive and alive. the mother is actually cooking (not talking much) and the daughter does the explaining part. For this purpose she needs to ask questions, even on something she knows very well.

  • In Thailand you can used pork instead of beef too, I love eat it with stiky rice and sometime with beer.

  • Aww, this is the American version Laab. I'm hmong and I like the Traditional Laos Laab better with all the tripes, bile liquid, and extra chili peppers to make it spicier. Also, I don't like my meat grounded into hamburger, I rather have it sliced really thin that way it will have better texture when you eat it. I guess this video isn't bad though for beginners who's never had laab before. I'm sure most asians like myself would prefer the traditional lao style better though, do y'all agree?

  • Fish Laab!!!

  • I think you made a serious typo. It's LAO food and Thai people love it so they just put it on their menu. LAO REPRESENT!

  • In Vietnam we cook the right like that before make it become a soup . That way the rice will not be so big when we make it become a soup

  • i've made so many dishes from their website. This is by far the healthiest and easiest thai food recipes. I am LOVING this so much. Ingredients is very inexpensive too. Sigh this mother/daughter duo is AWESOME. Thank you!!!!

  • maybe because she is half white.

  • OK, OK! Okayyyyy....... OKAY!

  • its funny how show says "Pepper"....

  • อืมมมมม คิดถึงเมืองไทยจัง หิวข้าวด้วย กินลาบ ตาม ด้วยโค้ก หรือ เป๊ปซี่ สุดยอด

  • This is an excellent ground meat dish which you can eat with almost anything!

I prepared the ground meat dish and had it with fragrant Thai Jasmine rice , Indian Pilaf Spiced Rice , French Bread/s and even with tortilla.

Just add in some cabbage , some onions , avocadoes , sliced eggs , tahini with lemon juice and cumin sauce and stuff everything in before you eat them.

Drink this with a good pineapple orange juice and papaya smoothies. Great over summer and autumn.

  • English...he lady is SE Asian...Thai or Lao I'd guess

  • They cook Thai food. What language do you think is this? Bulgarian or something?

  • um, english? what are you hearing?

  • I love Thai people & Thai food Yummy

  • Looks tasty. But all those chillies look terrifying

  • Yummy , All that vesgetable , Very healthy dish .

  • You have to leave the cooked mice meat to very cool, (not too cold and not too warm), otherwise the ground roasted rice will turn the dish to a paste!!!!

If you can not find red shallots, you can use onion as shown in this clip, but it's not traditional Esarn Thai recipe, and the flavour is odd.....เหมือนคนไทยย้อมหัวสีทอง

  • This is good stuff. I didn't like the part where she tried the meat and put the rest back into the mix. I hope they don't do that in restaurants!!

  • LAAB IS LAO FOOD

  • So what? Thai or Lao we are all the same.

  • Now I can make two of my favorite dishes. papaya salad and Laab.

  • One of my favorite. Laab with sticky rice is SO GOOD!!!!

  • This is good!! have it with some sticky rice & lettus &&& THATS THE BEST!

  • she never saw roasted rice before?.

  • I think she just try to be a bit interactive:-)

  • my favorite thai dish is pad kee mao. But really good thai food, even the wierd smelling ones, if they are well made are amazing dishes. I used to work part time wasing dishes at a thai resteraunt just to eat the food while I was the chef next door :) best quality thai food I have ever eaten.

  • totally different then my moms recipe

  • fantastic!!!!

  • Laab is the shieetttt, there are 2 forms cooked and raw. The cooked is for family and is grub BUT the raw version is sooo good with beer u have no idea!

  • Chilly pepper and rice are burned for great scent for the Larb.

You guys must be very careful to burn them especially chilly pepper!

  • I love this dish, It's delicious

  • Roasted rice and sour source are the key for this dish. In general, pork laab is much more popular than chicken or beef one.

  • Looks so yummy!

  • you can kick it up a notch by adding lemongrass and a case of heineken for garnish. love thai food.

  • man I know God loves to eat.ha..ha..ha..that is a great creation of food.look delicious.thank you for posting.

  • Very interesting I can't wait to make this! I would of never thought to serve it with raw vegetables like that, awesome idea.

  • na rak ahan thai aroi di no

    schan schob laab tisut

  • if you can cook all that...can you post a video up on how to cook thai boat noodles....

  • Excellent video and thanks for sharing! This dish is also good with romaine lettuce instead of cabbage - that's how I grew up eating this dish.

@RoyalLAO - the peppers are supposed to be cooked dark and to a slight burn. The burn is what gives them flavor. That doesn't make this dish Americanized . . ..besides, 90% of Americans won't touch a Thai chili.

  • Actully she didn't.

I should know i am Laos And Thai

  • LOL, that women with blue shirt kept saying "OK". its so ANNOYING.

  • The fermented fish paste (Paa Dek) that chanmalai mentions is different from the clear fish sauce(Nam Pa) that they put in. Yes, laap is not lapp without paa dek.

  • hahahha "but it doesn't taste like sand!"

  • thats not lao parsley, its saw leaves.

  • it looks absolutely savory...i'll try this recipe tomorrow...

  • kao kua ka...the daughter is so americanized lol

  • laab and sticky rice is always the best!

  • the lady who cooks is a chef i like her so professional....

  • good food, but i wish this girl don't try the food cause she put the spoon back or the left over on the pan sorry that don't look good girl, you can't do that on tv

  • yum yum......

  • yummy

  • every ingredient is in there, but i don't see you used that smelly permented fish paste? a Laab isn't a Laab without that fish paste..just doesn't taste the same.

  • They put the fish sauce after they finished cooking the beef. See the video again.

  • ลาบ ข้าวเหนียว ส้มตำ ไก่ย่าง

    คิดถึงจัง.....

  • Uhh... she's Thai? And yet she hasn't seen roasted rice?

    Duht cha lit.

  • She's American

  • i miss eating this

  • I even had Larb falvoured crackers when I was younger so its preeetty big back home I guess! :)

  • is that sticky rice they're roasting?? it kind of looks like it.

  • its "uncooked rice"

  • yum.. larb(lab) are the best. it looks yummy!!!!!

  • lao and thailand are like sisters

  • I love their thai cooking shows! I definitely love Laab! It is sooo good!

  • laab is one of my most favorite food

  • yum..even better with rice and spicy..:]

  • I made this twice already, its so good.

  • mshogunr you dont know what you are talking about, i think your talking out of yur ass..lao people are beautiful and sophisticated just like thai...so shut the hell up. making thai people look bad with your comment.

  • Laab is great. Laotians are communist in modern times and in origin. Thai people are more sophisticated and beautiful.

  • My family adores this dish; I serve mine with rice and fresh raw veggies like cuke slices and cherry toms to munch on. Laab totally transforms mince and is a gorgeous dish!

  • Tham Mah Koong!!!!!

  • Thailand and Lao supposed to be like one country before, Many part of Thailand was separate by British and French forces in history. Pretty much, what some Lao food was long time ago consider as Thai food....if u go back and read the history.

  • "pizza comes from italy, why you say its american food waah waaah boo hooo hooo". Geez stop crying people. stupid to feel your culture is infringed upon over a god damn dish. Sorry im just annoyed by the "you took it from us" comments from khmers and laos.

  • Larb is the unofficial national dish of Laos and is also very popular in Thailand. It is quite common to see this popular Lao meat salad served at Thai restaurants.

  • I agree with you my dear.. love your show.

  • I love laab! I crave it all the time!

  • Hmong have a version of Laab too.

  • Laab is a Lao NATIONAL DISH! So how is this Thai food?

  • In the description you will read that they acknowledge that laab originated in Lao.

  • Lao and Thai share many dishes with many differences in recipe. Northern Thai also has a difference style of Laab.

  • im definitely going to try this. looks good and not too complicated. thanks

  • that loooks soo goood!!

  • I miss Laab, Nam Tok, Som Tum, and Kai Yang. They are very popular food in Thailand. Thank you for posting this video. It makes me hungry.

  • I had laap dip at a wedding in Georgia. It was super fresh meat and soo good. But I tried laap leur (duck blood laap) and that was too much for me. Couldn't handle it :(

  • i've had laab raw and cooked. my mom and dad makes the best laab ever. i think my parents add pa-lay (sorry i don't know how to spell) into the laab too.

i really like cooked laab. it's really good.

  • LAAB ORIGINATED FROM LAOS JUST LIKE PHO IS CREDITED TO VIETNAM...ALSO THAI LAO ALMOST THE SAME THEY CALL THEIR LAO PEOPLE ESON or wuteva

  • I order this dish more often than my other favorites at my favorite local Thai restaurant. I always get chicken laab though. I always wondered where the nutty flavor came from... I thought it was some kind of seed! LOL Now I know!

  • Lao Laab is much spicier than Thai Laab and same goes to Som Dum. I like Loa's Somdum better----yumm!!!

  • Somdum tastier in Laos than in Thailand? Is that truly possible?

  • This little video is only part of a longer 30 minute TV show where we discuss the history of Laap and give credit to Laos for it's origins. We were only interested in posting the cooking portion of the video on YouTube so we edited out the background history.

Thai people are not taking credit for this dish. It is from Laos but very very popular in Thailand. I'm not sure how Laotians prepare it but when I was in Laos I had it...and it tasted different

  • It don't matter it from laos or thailand. Thanks for this video I now Know how to make Laab....and I realy Enjoy what you been posting.Keep it comming!!..oh I also posted how to make Crabrangoon, see what you think of it ....Gai

  • As I mentioned in a previous posting, this is part of a half hour cooking show on North East Thailand. We give credit to Laos for this dish. Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, have their own slightly different versions of Lap. Countries borrow and adapt recipes to suit their tastes. Very legal

  • This is so wrong because even Thai people who know better admit that Laab is a Lao dish...why are you calling it Thai laab??? just because Thai people love it too?...it's still a Lao dish, like how chow mein will always be a Chinese dish even if it's served in Japan...get it?

  • tubers please be aware that this is not traditional thai dish...its LAO.

  • Actually this was from a show on the foods of North East Thailand and we do refer to the Laotian influence. We decided not to include the cultural portion of the show on YouTube because we figured most people just want to learn how to cook the dish...not the history

  • Larb is a traditional lao dish that other cultures have adopted as well, but its originally from laos. Same as Pho is eaten all over, but it comes from Vietnam. This version of larb is simple and I think the toasted rice is too BURNT. Nice anyways

  • laab isnt just lao, khmer got one too

  • yeh man it sounds good too right now

  • aren't french fries pomme frite? get it?

  • Isn't laab a Lao crusine? Or is from the NE area of Thailand?

  • YUM
