Its a social piece showing society's adherense to rule to the point of irrationality. Because the artist said "don't feed the dog or give the dog water" the people passing through the exhibit obeyed. This blind obedience in spite of morality makes it a tragedic piece, but had someone cut the rope then it would have been a beautiful piece about a person whose compassion leads him to necessary rebellion. They intended for someone to cut the rope, the question is why didn't anyone?

Old news. It's funny looking back, but concerning how people STILL don't realize what the situation is. To those of you who don't realize what happened, it was a starving dog that was captured off the street. It was tied up in the exhibit for three hours before it escaped. The claims that he "starved a dog to death" went viral and were investigated, but turned out to be baseless. The real problem are the people who care about this one incident while ignoring the millions of starving street dogs.
It is not stupid and he is clearly not stupid; this is a magnificent artist who is brave to confront the issue of starving dogs in his country of Costa Rica. You can see it both ways; he could be protesting against the real act of starving dogs in his country. Most people when seeing starving animals get offended; but the artist is simply making you see the visual pain and when an artist makes you feel some sort of feeling he has achieved it in art. Keep PETA out of Latin America!

I would hardly call starving and dehydrating an animal to death making a point, drawing attention to the plight of many animals. I would call this horrific act exactly what it is; abuse to the most sadistic degree possible, that of causing death. In other words, you can use your energy on this event, or you can help to save strays that are alive and need help-- by donating or volunteering. :) A couple places include the ASPCA or Animal League.
I'm not saying whether this exhibit was right or wrong but people are talking about animal abuse. They react to a single case of abuse, with the face of a cute dog and a villain to blame, more than the entire spectrum of abuse that goes on because it's too overwhelming.
This art is only a small window to the world, and the fact that no one did anything while the dog was actually present just shows how people want to be heroes about an event that's already over with because it's easier that way.
I'm from the UK, and I don't see any dogs starving on the streets. But you know what I would do if I did see one? Do something about it. I would care for it, rehabilitate it, and take it to an animal shelter. Not to leave it there to suffer a cruel death, because that is what a heartless person does. Animals have feelings too, and they CAN feel pain so I don't see what people cant just take the time to help the poor creature. Animal abuse repulses me, and I wish I could just stop it all.
...You people do know that the gallery owner said that the dog WAS well cared for while it was in the gallery, right? The only time is was "abandoned" was during the exhibit hours. The dog was fine, it didn't starve to death in that gallery. It apparently got loose and ran off, so if it died, it died because people saw it in the streets and failed to do anything about it and rescue it. Not because of the artist.
@laxbellexmort It was tied up for roughy 3 hours before it got loose. Hell, Vargas himself purportedly was the one who went out and bought food for it, feeding it regularly while he had it. And it's ridiculous how successful Vargas was. You all, STILL decrying his "cruelty" (which turns out is nonexistent) while hundreds of dogs are still starving and dying slowly in the streets as people go about their lives without a second thought about those poor creatures. My thanks for making me aware of this. Many have expressed only visceral anger in their replies. For me, this "exhibit" raises so many issues, my outrage and disgust are only a small part of what I want to express and discuss.
I believe all life has inherent value. But I don't see ALL life as having identical worth. Many species have sentience on a level we're still trying to measure accurately. Dogs are SMART. Not human, but not "dumb animals" whose lives should be deemed cheap.
I wrote about sentience, self-awareness, because many would react "its only a dog". I might understand if we were talking about an earthworm, or a termite. But dogs reason and have emotions. It wasn't just suffering physical pain! Many higher mammals feel a similar range of emotions to humans. To me, thats what really makes this scary. Where do you draw the line? Would you treat a horse like this? A dolphin? A gorilla? If so, then why not a human? Where does this end?

I would hardly call starving and dehydrating an animal to death making a point, drawing attention to the plight of many animals. I would call this horrific act exactly what it is; abuse to the most sadistic degree possible, that of causing death. Some inhuman scum would have to demonstrate this in order for it to become a part of anyone's conscious thought; the vast majority of human beings would be incapable of such a thought. Behavior such as this demands prosecution and incarceration.

I'm not saying whether this exhibit was right or wrong but people are talking about animal abuse. They react to a single case of abuse, with the face of a cute dog and a villain to blame, more than the entire spectrum of abuse that goes on because it's too overwhelming.
This art is only a small window to the world, and the fact that no one did anything while the dog was actually present just shows how people want to be heroes about an event that's already over with because it's easier that way.

I'm from the UK, and I don't see any dogs starving on the streets. But you know what I would do if I did see one? Do something about it. I would care for it, rehabilitate it, and take it to an animal shelter. Not to leave it there to suffer a cruel death, because that is what a heartless person does. Animals have feelings too, and they CAN feel pain so I don't see what people cant just take the time to help the poor creature. Animal abuse repulses me, and I wish I could just stop it all.

...You people do know that the gallery owner said that the dog WAS well cared for while it was in the gallery, right? The only time is was "abandoned" was during the exhibit hours. The dog was fine, it didn't starve to death in that gallery. It apparently got loose and ran off, so if it died, it died because people saw it in the streets and failed to do anything about it and rescue it. Not because of the artist.

And it's ridiculous how successful Vargas was. My thanks for making me aware of this. Many have expressed only visceral anger in their replies. For me, this "exhibit" raises so many issues, my outrage and disgust are only a small part of what I want to express and discuss.
I believe all life has inherent value. But I don't see ALL life as having identical worth. Many species have sentience on a level we're still trying to measure accurately. Dogs are SMART. Not human, but not "dumb animals" whose lives should be deemed cheap.

I wrote about sentience, self-awareness, because many would react "its only a dog". I might understand if we were talking about an earthworm, or a termite. But dogs reason and have emotions. It wasn't just suffering physical pain! Many higher mammals feel a similar range of emotions to humans. To me, thats what really makes this scary. Where do you draw the line? Would you treat a horse like this? A dolphin? A gorilla? If so, then why not a human? Where does this end?

@B789c it is all a part of life,death pain and suffering. there is nothing more real or certain than death but when humans come face to face with it they are too afraid to embrace it. everyone agrees that all creatures SHOULD die in a peaceful way but in the real world which most healthy people decide to hide away from,there IS suffering and pain . this is what the artist was trying to do and it really did work. just look at the reaction it has created

Animal Cruelty comes in all different forms. This is NO exception. We must give animals a voice because they cannot speak for themselves! thank you for discussing this.
