Dwan is 10000 miles better than Hellmuth. Phil is a great tourney player but that only means he knows to play shallow stacks like 30-50BB stacks with preflop and flop decisions (and not many 4bet pot postflop or big decisions river because of the stack sizes)

Dwan is one of the best NLHE players in the world in 100+BB games which are tougher to play than MTTs (any donk can win a big MTT, many vgood MTT regs are obv expert in this field but would get crushed in mid/high stakes CG online )

@JAD12588 Dwan has never won a tournament just because of variance : he plays like 20 events for about 3 years at the WSOP, many low buy in events (1000-2500$) are donkaments with like 2k players so even Ivey wouldn't win one event out of 200 with big 2k fields like those.

So since Dwan hasn't played more than 100 events at the WSOP lifetime (IMO) i guess there is nothing sucky about never having shipped a MTT.

Don't forget he finished second once, and also final tabled a WPT (4th place) in 2007

@alive2k7 this years wsop dwan had the most buy ins(around 50) in the touranament and i think he had only 2 or 3 cashes.seriously tom dwan is a good player but not as much as many believe...he is good in tv cash games and that because he wants to bluff and do hero calls with 9 high just for the camera...thats why he hasnt win any big tournament yet..in tournaments he is good at head-up but he is way to aggresive for other games(sorry for my english)

Hellmuth is dead correct. We've all watched too many cocky pro's go all in with 10's or even 8's, sure no doubt they win a few hands. When they do such hands, do they feel good on sucking out? Of course they do, they just beat the crap out of Aces. But at that point do they understand that poker is not just a day's stats? If you average out all in pre-flop AA vs 10's about a hundred times, AA's will win 70% of the time. Risk of ruin will catch up to you, it is inevitable

@314nayar dude u get delt a pocket pair approximitly once every 17 hands so if dwan has pocket 10s preflop, hellmuth most likely does not have a pocket pair and even if he does its rarely gonna be j-j q-q k-k or a-a so its a standard play headsup. some people ship in all their chips with q-10 while playing headsup. dwan did not know that phil had aces so its normal to ship em all with 10s when ur headsup

Second, most high stakes cash game players play the main event with a super loose agressive style so they either get a big stack really fast or go home really fast. What they absolutely don´t want is to play 3 days and make a mincash when they couldve won 10 times that money playing cashgames. Hellmuth doesn´t have the luxury of being a winning player in high stakes cashgames so for him the WSOP is his biggest source of income.

I like Dwan, and I think he's very effective in deep stack cash games. But here, I have to agree with Phil. Given his style of play in these situations, I think you have to give him credit for a big hand after 3 betting preflop on the third hand, or at least give him a range of hands that match up very well against 10-10. 10-10 isn't fun to play postflop, but I still say the best play is a call or min raise. All-in has poor expected value.
