You should redo this experiment. When you start a DS game on a 3DS system, hold down start and select, and it re-sizes the game into the correct format.

They don't. The 3DS has a higher resolution and a different screen all together. This makes DS games look blurry and the colours seem to merge together a lot :L This is because the DS games were not built for this console.

To be fair, the 3DS isn't made to play DS games as good as the DS itself. And there's no way to actually record using software, so it's not very accurate anyway. Love the video though. Thanks for putting it up! :D
This is only because DS games themselves arent designed for the 3DS screens, so the game only plays on 1 layer of the screen, hence why it looks a little watered out. If it was desigened to also make full use of the 3DS (without using it's 3D capabilitys) it's graphical display would be significantly better

@Koolredfox its only the olds games that can give you eyestrain. Resident Evil Revelations, Mario Kart, Mario 3D land etc are all so superb in the 3D that it doesnt bother eyes at all
You can make the DS games go full screen on the 3DS with a button combo upon startup or something to that effect. I've had no issues with my DS games on 3DS, they still look as good as on my old DSlite.
You trolls still complain about graphics? I have had more fun playing donkey kong on my virtual console than I have ever had on my hacked psp. Besides, it has mario kart and starfox - something Sony can never claim :D
DS games played on the 3DS don't look as good compared to previous models. But the games actually tailored to the 3DS look better than normal DS games (even when the 3D id turned off).
@archange156 That's because 3DS is a whole new system. It's like comparing Gamecube to N64, of course Gamecube looks better than N64, same with 3DS compared to DS. Remember, the 3DS is not just another DS with 3D ability. It's completely different. It's just backwards compatable with DS.

This doesn't make sense with what you're saying though... The 3DS is way more brighter then the DS and DSi's highest brightness settings... The 3DS is advanced technology and the DS is a kid's toy in comparison, even the Wii isn't as powerful as a 3DS. I'd like to know how you filmed this and any other details. When I set the brightness to highest, without power saving mode, it's blindingly bright - whereas none of the DS generation has been that way.
I rember playing this game on my ds lite and 3ds, it looked NOTHING like the ones up here. They where both the same color, and the 3ds looked a bit sharper.

Playing DS games on the 3DS does make the quality crappy. Since the top screen is like WIdescreen it basically shrinks down to an emulator screen. The bottom screen is smaller than the DS screen the touch screen is also with bad quality.

I also have this theory that PS1/PS2 was best selling because sega kept fucking up (and ended up killing themselves in the process), nintendo gave 3rd parties the finger, meaning their consoles had only the 1st party titles, and microsoft was only just getting started... PS2 was highest of all time because the gaming market just happened to be growing at the time =p

@olimopoli the way western devs are unless the vita bombs the 3ds will end up like the DS. Spec wise the 3ds is less than half of the vistas capabilities. Plus the vita's online is better for online gaming, being able to play against the ps3 in compatible games online was a brilliant move.
@BassXX02 Wrong. The 3DS is not half the capability of Vita. Resident Evil Revelations says otherwise. Can the Vita do 3D? Who says Vita has better online gaming? And what says the 3DS won't have some of those same features, of sharing games with a console? A new Smash Bros game is being made for Wii U and 3DS and are supposed to be able to connect somehow.That might be a feature. 3DS/Vita graphics and capabilities are much closer than DS/PSP were, and DS sold more than double PSP.
@garvensman lol have you played that resident evil game? looks like a ps2 game. go and watch Fifa gameplay footage for both before making a grahical comparison. And the Vita has a way better frame-rate then the 3ds even with the 3d turned off. And No the vita can't do 3D but through a simple firmware update the PSV could do it with glasses which is better on your eyes. And a new Smash bros is supposedly going to be in the works for the wii U and 3ds.
@garvensman And yes the vita has better online then the 3DS. The Vita uses the same network as the ps3 and you can even play against ps3 users. And like the 360 the vita has party chat which is awesome for games and features like netflix. Even the ps3 wasnt capable of that because of its 256 mb of system ram. The 3ds won't be able to even mulitask like that with only 128mb of system ram. Now I am looking forward to the Wii U and a possible Smash bros game for my 3ds.
@BassXX02 You don't know what kind of connection 3DS/Wii U might have. Nintendo has hinted they will be strongly connected, and that includes the new Smash game, that is slated to simultaneously release on 3DS/Wii U.
@garvensman and 140-50 million isn't double 80 million bro. its close. But like the ps2 the psp will continue to sell well into the vita's lifespan because of sony's 10 year support system. As a matter of fact the vita still sells an average of 50,000 systems a week. DS numbers have come virtually to compelete hault because of the 3ds which is bad from a finacial point of view because if the 3ds was to stop doing so well the lack of DSs sold can't make up losses.

@garvensman Well if you look at the processor specs....Vita is about 12x as fast. If Nintendo didnt rely on gimicks with all their products....the new DS could have had graphics half of what the Vita is. The 3ds has two processors dedicated to 3 screens....imagine if they just dropped the 3d gimmick, They would have more money to spend on a better processor/vcard and could dedicate all its power to 1 screen. The 3DS now is equal to something between a gamecube and an original xbox.
@JeffreyJenness 3D is not a gimmick, neither is touch control, nor motion control. They are trying to CHANGE things up to keep this industry moving forward, as simply having the best tech is not always the way to go. PSP is MUCH more powerful than the DS, and we all know how that turned out. Wii is much less powerful than 360 and PS3, yet it has sold the most. Vita is advertised as a portable PS3, which isnt the best move as most gamers would rather play the game on the PS3.
@TheChillarmy the wii sold more because it was aimed for a more casual market thanks to it's gimmick, just like the 3DS uses 3D as it's gimmick. i love my 3DS and i don't own a wii but some games do look great ( mainly xenoblade, the last story, donkey kong country returns, and the mario galaxy games...and zelda) but they use a gimmick so they can sell to a different type of market.
@TheChillarmy well yea touch control isnt. But the way the wii controller worked at first for most game was a gimmick. It was totally unresponsive and pointless with most title, except boom blox. The newer motion control are great though. I think this 3d is kinda a gimmick....sony is working on a technology where you wear glasses and the 3d image changes location when viewed at angles...displaying a holographic image where you can see from the side and such. That would be a non-gimmick...

The World Ends With You didn't sell that well and it was one of the best JRPGS of this generation. same can be said about Radiant Historia, Disgaea, and others. so your argument being sales= it's fun does not work
@MrFinalgamer You seem to forget that PS1 and PS2 used to have all the shovelware too, hence why they sold so well. Shovelware sucks, but it moves consoles. The Wii has sold more games than either PS3/360 as well as more consoles. Wii-95million units/770million games PS3-61million units/518million games 360-64million units/607million games.
@MrFinalgamer Yea a lot of people think the Wii is nextgen and that is similar to 360 and PS3. It is just a gamecube which had a gimmicky controller at first. It has graphics from 1999, but "casual" or non-gamers believe that it is comparable to nextgen systems. The Ps3 and 360 lost money when selling their consoles, while the Wii probably made $200 per console sold, because they only probably cost $20 to produce. They prolly just took the parts out of gamecubes and put them in a white box
@TheBeaver50 yea gameplay and fun factor are important...but graphics and such contribute to this. If specs wernt important then we would still be playing NES-looking game. If it has higher specs then it can have more gameplay options.....imagine having a 32player or 64player online game on the 3ds?...thats not related to graphics but to processing power that would contribute to a purely bettter gameplay experience. Better graphics, proccesing power, etc.. contributes to a better gameplay

@MrFinalgamer Well it is probably about the same. The Wii has a 700mhz processor while the 3ds has two 300mhz ones....and the 3ds has to essentially run 3 screens at once...but it has to only run at about half the resolution. So they processing speeds are about the same. The wii gpu is slightly faster at about 250mhz and the 3ds at 200mhz. but the 3ds one is newer so it has cooler and better effects(like seen in RE:R)....so again about equal. I believe the 3ds has significant more RAM though
@JeffreyJenness So the 3ds is probably just as powerful as Wii, but with some upgrade lighting effects and stuff. The Wii is a pathetic piece of hardware, but the 3ds is alright. I love mine, it runs well. But I mean it is kinda sad that the phone in my pocket has dual core 1.2ghz, while my newer 3ds has dualcore 300mhz, and it is 4x the size. My phone has 3d too... I love the 3ds games, except I just wish it was more powerful so they could make better games with more gameplay options.

I like the 3d, I think it looks cool...but I just wish they invested the money they spent on that on better processors and GPUs, that is all. It would be so cool to play the new kid icarus with 32 players online instead of just 6......Id trade that ability for a 3d effect.

Whether the graphics of 3DS is better or not, I like the DS and DS Lite better for 2 reasons:
1. It doesn't strain your eyes.

Playing DS games on the 3DS does make the quality crappy. Since the top screen is like WIdescreen it basically shrinks down to an emulator screen. The bottom screen is smaller than the DS screen the touch screen is also with bad quality.

I also have this theory that PS1/PS2 was best selling because sega kept fucking up (and ended up killing themselves in the process), nintendo gave 3rd parties the finger, meaning their consoles had only the 1st party titles, and microsoft was only just getting started... PS2 was highest of all time because the gaming market just happened to be growing at the time =p

@garvensman But I'm not a fanboy in the slightest. Despite having both a 3ds(zelda edition :3) and the ps vita I spend most of my time playing pokemon Black and white competitively. And with the annoucement of Black 2 and White 2 I'll be spending a lot more time on 3ds

@olimopoli the way western devs are unless the vita bombs the 3ds will end up like the DS. Spec wise the 3ds is less than half of the vistas capabilities. Plus the vita's online is better for online gaming, being able to play against the ps3 in compatible games online was a brilliant move.

@BassXX02 Wrong. The 3DS is not half the capability of Vita. Resident Evil Revelations says otherwise. Can the Vita do 3D? Who says Vita has better online gaming? And what says the 3DS won't have some of those same features, of sharing games with a console? A new Smash Bros game is being made for Wii U and 3DS and are supposed to be able to connect somehow.That might be a feature. 3DS/Vita graphics and capabilities are much closer than DS/PSP were, and DS sold more than double PSP.

@garvensman lol have you played that resident evil game? looks like a ps2 game. go and watch Fifa gameplay footage for both before making a grahical comparison. And the Vita has a way better frame-rate then the 3ds even with the 3d turned off. And No the vita can't do 3D but through a simple firmware update the PSV could do it with glasses which is better on your eyes. And a new Smash bros is supposedly going to be in the works for the wii U and 3ds.

@garvensman And yes the vita has better online then the 3DS. The Vita uses the same network as the ps3 and you can even play against ps3 users. And like the 360 the vita has party chat which is awesome for games and features like netflix. Even the ps3 wasnt capable of that because of its 256 mb of system ram. The 3ds won't be able to even mulitask like that with only 128mb of system ram. Now I am looking forward to the Wii U and a possible Smash bros game for my 3ds.

@BassXX02 You don't know what kind of connection 3DS/Wii U might have. Nintendo has hinted they will be strongly connected, and that includes the new Smash game, that is slated to simultaneously release on 3DS/Wii U.

@garvensman and 140-50 million isn't double 80 million bro. its close. But like the ps2 the psp will continue to sell well into the vita's lifespan because of sony's 10 year support system. As a matter of fact the vita still sells an average of 50,000 systems a week. DS numbers have come virtually to compelete hault because of the 3ds which is bad from a finacial point of view because if the 3ds was to stop doing so well the lack of DSs sold can't make up losses.

@garvensman Well if you look at the processor specs....Vita is about 12x as fast. If Nintendo didnt rely on gimicks with all their products....the new DS could have had graphics half of what the Vita is. The 3ds has two processors dedicated to 3 screens....imagine if they just dropped the 3d gimmick, They would have more money to spend on a better processor/vcard and could dedicate all its power to 1 screen. The 3DS now is equal to something between a gamecube and an original xbox.

@JeffreyJenness 3D is not a gimmick, neither is touch control, nor motion control. They are trying to CHANGE things up to keep this industry moving forward, as simply having the best tech is not always the way to go. PSP is MUCH more powerful than the DS, and we all know how that turned out. Wii is much less powerful than 360 and PS3, yet it has sold the most. Vita is advertised as a portable PS3, which isnt the best move as most gamers would rather play the game on the PS3.

@TheChillarmy the wii sold more because it was aimed for a more casual market thanks to it's gimmick, just like the 3DS uses 3D as it's gimmick. i love my 3DS and i don't own a wii but some games do look great ( mainly xenoblade, the last story, donkey kong country returns, and the mario galaxy games...and zelda) but they use a gimmick so they can sell to a different type of market.

@TheChillarmy well yea touch control isnt. But the way the wii controller worked at first for most game was a gimmick. It was totally unresponsive and pointless with most title, except boom blox. The newer motion control are great though. I think this 3d is kinda a gimmick....sony is working on a technology where you wear glasses and the 3d image changes location when viewed at angles...displaying a holographic image where you can see from the side and such. That would be a non-gimmick...

@TheBeaver50 they sell because they have the cheapest hardware and some of it's library (in the wii's case sadly about 90% of it's games) is shovelware that the casual market love. so use a better argument than sells. The World Ends With You didn't sell that well and it was one of the best JRPGS of this generation. same can be said about Radiant Historia, Disgaea, and others. so your argument being sales= it's fun does not work

@MrFinalgamer You seem to forget that PS1 and PS2 used to have all the shovelware too, hence why they sold so well. Shovelware sucks, but it moves consoles. The Wii has sold more games than either PS3/360 as well as more consoles. Wii-95million units/770million games PS3-61million units/518million games 360-64million units/607million games.

@MrFinalgamer Yea a lot of people think the Wii is nextgen and that is similar to 360 and PS3. It is just a gamecube which had a gimmicky controller at first. It has graphics from 1999, but "casual" or non-gamers believe that it is comparable to nextgen systems. The Ps3 and 360 lost money when selling their consoles, while the Wii probably made $200 per console sold, because they only probably cost $20 to produce. They prolly just took the parts out of gamecubes and put them in a white box

@TheBeaver50 yea gameplay and fun factor are important...but graphics and such contribute to this. If specs wernt important then we would still be playing NES-looking game. If it has higher specs then it can have more gameplay options.....imagine having a 32player or 64player online game on the 3ds?...thats not related to graphics but to processing power that would contribute to a purely bettter gameplay experience. Better graphics, proccesing power, etc.. contributes to a better gameplay

@TheBeaver50 And the Wii outsold everyone at first because it was DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE who.... "HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT GAMEING IS ALL ABOUT". Only the young people and non-gamers loved it, the were so clueless that they didnt even realise that the WiiMote was an inacurate POS that just appeared to me accurate motion controls. It was a gimmick because it didnt work! The new Zelda with WiiMote Plus is a different story...that actually a good example of it not being a gimmick

@MrFinalgamer Well it is probably about the same. The Wii has a 700mhz processor while the 3ds has two 300mhz ones....and the 3ds has to essentially run 3 screens at once...but it has to only run at about half the resolution. So they processing speeds are about the same. The wii gpu is slightly faster at about 250mhz and the 3ds at 200mhz. but the 3ds one is newer so it has cooler and better effects(like seen in RE:R)....so again about equal. I believe the 3ds has significant more RAM though

@JeffreyJenness So the 3ds is probably just as powerful as Wii, but with some upgrade lighting effects and stuff. The Wii is a pathetic piece of hardware, but the 3ds is alright. I love mine, it runs well. But I mean it is kinda sad that the phone in my pocket has dual core 1.2ghz, while my newer 3ds has dualcore 300mhz, and it is 4x the size. My phone has 3d too... I love the 3ds games, except I just wish it was more powerful so they could make better games with more gameplay options.

Power and visuals are 2 different things. It may have the power of "gamecube-xbox" but the visuals are much, much better than that. It's able to pull off effects and visuals they can't achieve. Just because YOU don't like 3D doesn't mean it's a "gimmick".

@garvensman Well I dont think the Dual screens are gimmicks....just the initial Wiimote(I think the wiimotePlus is very good) and virtual boy of course lol. I like the 3d, I think it looks cool...but I just wish they invested the money they spent on that on better processors and GPUs, that is all. It would be so cool to play the new kid icarus with 32 players online instead of just 6......Id trade that ability for a 3d effect.
